Going to a dog friendly holiday let. It's going to stink isn't it?

Shall I take a nose peg?

Just piss all around it, so you can only smell your own scent.

DecafGreen · 16/08/2024 08:55

I hope not because I am going to a dog friendly holiday cottage too this weekend and I hadn't given a thought to what it might smell like!

99OrangeBalloons · 16/08/2024 08:56

The cottage ILs booked earlier in the summer was dog friendly - no smell at all.

Why book it if it's such an issue for you 🙄

Tagyoureit · 16/08/2024 08:56

I wouldn't book a dog friendly place due to this.

Even dog friendly places have rules like no dogs upstairs and there was a post on here a couple of weeks ago where everyone told the OP to just take the dog upstairs and blatantly break the rules of the let.

MajesticWhine · 16/08/2024 08:56

It should be fine. It still needs to be cleaned for you even if it’s dog friendly.

Scottishskifun · 16/08/2024 08:56

Been to many a holiday let which allows dogs never had an issue. Often found them to be cleaner then places that don't allow dogs tbh!

Zanatdy · 16/08/2024 08:57

The dog friendly cottage I stayed at once (with my dog) didn’t stink at all.

Gizlotsmum · 16/08/2024 08:58

It might not. Depends if they have a lot of carpets/ soft furnishings which the dogs are allowed on ( some pet friendly lets only have hard floor and don’t permit dogs on sofas etc). However you might notice it more if you are normally pet free. Open windows when you get there and hopefully it won’t be too bad

WildWildWestCoast · 16/08/2024 08:58

Depends. We're in a dog friendly cottage at the moment and you'd never know. We don't have pets and my husband has a very high sense of smell, so he'd definitely comment if it smelled! Hard flooring throughout definitely helps keep the smells down.

Mischance · 16/08/2024 08:59

I try and avoid dog friendly let's especially if there is more than one on a site. I know that I will be faced with barking every time I step out of the door.

Mischance · 16/08/2024 08:59

Lets. Blooming auto correct.

Werweisswohin · 16/08/2024 08:59

I'd avoid a dog friendly let tbh, the dog smell just seems to linger. I say that as someone who didn't notice the dog smell too much when I lived with one but then went on to really notice when returning for visits after I'd moved out. Open windows as much as you can once you are there!

ouch44 · 16/08/2024 09:00

Never noticed a dog friendly cottage stink. We have been to many because we have a dog! Most dog owners take loads of blankets/throws etc for dogs to sleep on.

Cleanliness and smell aren't necessarily the same thing.

Dog owners can be 'nose blind'. I know I partly was when I lived with dogs.

longapple · 16/08/2024 09:05

I've only ever noticed the dog smell in places where a dog had lived long term, if the place is cleaned properly no smells should linger long from short term lets in my experience (even cigarette smoke, although that's not one I'd risk intentionally, I only realised after we arrived that they allowed smoking but it was fine!)

Arrivapercy · 16/08/2024 09:07

We find the smell tends to be at the background level, immediately noticeable to a non-dog owner but not to a dog owner. It's not the smell of pee or poo accidents - more general "dog musk".

However what we do find is anyone with even mild allergies is affected. You can hoover up hair/skin but its the saliva - dogs WILL lick & mouth things and dribble. Unless carpets, sofa covers, cushions & long curtains have all been very recently washed, the dog saliva is there. Its a factor in the smell.

Caffeineislife · 16/08/2024 09:08

It completely depends on how well they are cleaned, the amount of dogs that have been in them, the amount of soft furnishings they have and how responsible previous renters of the property have been re the rules on where dogs can and can't go.

We have family and friends that stop in pet friendly accomodation as they have dogs and generally don't have a problem. It tends to either be absolutely fine or it absolutely stinks.

Judging by previous threads on dog friendly accomodation, most people seem to ignore the no dogs on sofas/ beds/ upstairs rules.

We always make sure that the property is not pet friendly due to severe pet allergies.

HotPotato123 · 16/08/2024 09:12

I own a holiday let where we allow dogs. We get more people without than with dogs though. My places definitely doesn’t smell of dogs. I don’t have any pets so I’m quite aware if there is a pet smell. I open all windows and doors as soon as I arrive at the let to clean it. Airing it is the best thing, for pet or human smells!

AugustAlready · 16/08/2024 09:16

@Batmanisaplaceinturkey

maybe, for everyone's sake, it's best you don't go.

Catza · 16/08/2024 09:21

Why book a dog friendly place if you have no dog and then worry it is going to smell? Book a place which doesn't allow dogs and leave the pet friendly ones to those who actually need them.

QuiteDisgruntled · 16/08/2024 09:23

I’ve stayed in dog-friendly lets both with and without dogs (not a dog owner but we occasionally holiday with ILs who have a dog or have stayed in a place which happens to allow pets). Never had any issues at all.

Yes this is absolutely spot on about allergies. I've been to places and have walked in and can tell immediately if they've had dogs in there.

Its a shame because lots of places don't offer a non-dog space and mistakenly think if they hoover and open windows it will be fine. It isn't and have had to end up leaving a couple of places early. I also think people bring dogs to air bnbs when perhaps the Airbnb owners aren't aware - if its a lockbox they won't know who's staying there.

Sweetteaplease · 16/08/2024 09:38

Yep and probably have fleas 🤢

Yes OP, I'm sure it will be a stinking cesspit, riddled with fleas and hair. Best you don't bother.

Why on earth would you choose a dog friendly property when you have this concern? Plenty out there that don't take dogs.
