Why book a dog friendly cottage.

Wild guess but perhaps they want to take their dog on holiday in a cottage... it does happen, and that's why dog-friendly cottages exist among us

DonnaGiovanna · 16/08/2024 11:29

And I don't have a dog and woukd definitely have noticed dog smell.

They didn't even say they were taking a dog, they just said it will stink.

I took our dog with us to a holiday let, never did stink.

MiddleAgedDread · 16/08/2024 11:36

I've been to a dog friendly holiday let every year for the last few years with friends who have a dog and i've never noticed any smell! also stayed in a dog friendly hotel room recently and there was no trace of dog in that.

TheCompactPussycat · 16/08/2024 11:41

We've recently stayed in a pet-friendly holiday let, without a dog, and it didn't smell of anything other than clean sheets and furnishings.

If this sort of thing is a problem for you though, the simple answer is to book somewhere that isn't pet-friendly.

InformEducateEntertain · 16/08/2024 11:50

Currently staying in a dog friendly cottage. No doggy smells.
We have teenagers though so there are teenager smells instead.

KnickerlessParsons · 16/08/2024 11:53

Even if the inside is clean you'll know that dogs have been pooing and weeing in the garden 🤮

The cottage ILs booked earlier in the summer was dog friendly - no smell at all.

Why book it if it's such an issue for you 🙄

This. Why did you book it? We’ve stayed in plenty of dog friendly places and they never stink.

Lovelysummerdays · 16/08/2024 12:06

I might be nose blind as I have a dog but I used to gave a business cleaning holiday cottages and dog friendly ones got a deeper clean/ longer time slot. I cleaned them myself and was very forthright with potential clients about what would/ wouldn’t work.

With possible pets/ hard floors throughout or no pets on carpeted areas. Easy to clean sofas I.e. leather or with washable covers with spare sets. A stack of blankets that can be used for pet and some coloured towels for pets.

Linens and towels got washed with a pet hair dissolver sachet. Every surface should be cleaned between guests so shouldn’t smell. I’d decline a pet friendly holiday let with carpets as it’s nigh on impossible to get all the hair/ smell out the carpet.

dbeuowlxb173939 · 16/08/2024 12:12

Hopefully not, it will have been cleaned and aired. Depends if it's carpet or hard floor I guess.
But also why would you book if you're that bothered...?

BCBird · 16/08/2024 12:19

Not necessarily. Went to pet friendly holiday let with mate- she dog owner not me and it was spotlessly clean and no doggy smell at all.

Bonniegirlie · 16/08/2024 12:21

Probably not. We go to dog friendly cottages several times a year and haven’t had a stinky one yet.

AutumnColour89 · 16/08/2024 14:19

Lots of 'We've never noticed a smell when we've taken our doggy to a dog-friendly holiday let'.

Of course you haven't, because you're used to the smell or just generally unoffended by it in order to own one in the first place.
I'm someone who is very sensitive to it (and in early pregnancy it was my worst sickness trigger). I can only think of one, possibly two dog-owning homes I've been in where I couldnt smell dog as soon as I've walked through the door (and one is huge rooms, high ceilings, all wood floors).

But, I've stayed in dog-friendly lets with friends who have one, and most are well-cleaned and geared towards minimising smells (no carpets etc).

Werweisswohin · 16/08/2024 09:00

Cleanliness and smell aren't necessarily the same thing.

Work top Sides I would agree but carpet and furnishings definitely do smell if not cleaned properly.

We stay in both types dog friendly and non dog friendly - always found dog places to be cleaned better hence no smell.

Catza · 16/08/2024 09:21

Why book a dog friendly place if you have no dog and then worry it is going to smell? Book a place which doesn't allow dogs and leave the pet friendly ones to those who actually need them.

And go online and make a post about it smelling before you even know that it does. The place, you booked, knowing it’s dog friendly.

DilemmaDelilah · 16/08/2024 15:44

We went to a dog friendly place (without a dog) in May. It was clean and fresh. They asked that dogs were not allowed in the bedrooms, which were carpeted, all the other areas had hard floors with a rug in the sitting room. They had leather/leatherette chairs and sofa. We would definitely go there again, if fact I was just wondering if we could afford to go again this year.

steadywinner · 16/08/2024 15:58

I've got to be honest, I've been to loads of dog friendly holiday lets, even without a dog. And I've not found any of them to be smelly.

I think the doggy smell that you get in your own house (and I notice that pretty much every time I visit someone with a dog) is from their bedding and toys not being washed often enough.

As people on holiday tend to bring their own dog bed with them and not a whole toy box, the smell won't linger so much as it does in your own home. The holiday home will get a good airing and vacuuming etc at changeover.

Yeah it may get rid of the stench of stupid humans. Take a couple more for your fingers so you don’t end up shit posting on holiday.

Tel12 · 16/08/2024 16:05

No. We used to take our dog everywhere, she had her own bed.

Snowpaw · 16/08/2024 16:21

I stood in dog shit in the garden of a dog friendly property (we don't have a dog) on the first day of holiday and ruined my lovely sandals - I threw them in the bin I was that disgusted and it had gone into the seams on the sides and I just thought they'd never feel clean again. Disgusting.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/08/2024 10:39

Why book a dog friendly cottage.

Perhaps there was no alternative? It's sometimes difficult to find non dog friendly accommodation.

MrsApplepants · 16/08/2024 16:42

I’ve booked and stayed in plenty of dog friendly cottages and noticed no smells, theyve all been fine. Apart from the one time I booked a dog friendly cabin at Center parcs longleat. It stank to high heaven and I couldn’t wait to get away. Never again.

Saltedbutter · 16/08/2024 16:42

Why would it?
Most nice country hotels and country pubs are dog friendly and they certainly don’t stink.

DreamW3aver · 16/08/2024 16:47

I went to someone's house yesterday and they have 2 dogs, house didn't smell at all, I don't understand why you'd assume that a place that occasionally have a dog in would stink. Are you prone to over dramatis
