Going to a dog friendly holiday let. It's going to stink isn't it?

Shall I take a nose peg?

No, they dont stink.
Also what is the point in booking a dog friendly cottage if you're going to moan about it? Go somewhere else.

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 16/08/2024 20:09

Raised an eyebrow at some of the replies. I forgot how offended some dog people tend to get!

To those who ask why I booked, it was a bit last minute and availability was limited. The website also didn't let you filter by 'no pets'. Most of the available lets allowed pets.

Now it's booked I'm a bit worried. I've stayed in pet friendly places before and they've all reeked of dog so I'm hopeful this one will buck the trend.

I’m a dog person and not at all offended. It just seems a bit slow of you if they’ve ’all Reeked of dog’ in the past to not have at least checked? Are you booking very low end accommodation? Did the other reviews not reflect this in the past? I’d have assumed they would have and you wouldn’t have booked?
I can’t say I’ve ever experienced it and I often smell other peoples pets out and about.

Been to many a holiday let which allows dogs never had an issue. Often found them to be cleaner then places that don't allow dogs tbh!

^ This…

Thinly veiled dog hating thread OP, I’m allergic to cats so I wouldn’t book a cat friendly let- simples.

Edited to add I once had the misfortune to book a let where there was period blood on the bedding and no it wasn’t low end, also pulled a blanket out of the closet and a ton of sand came out! The flooring in another let was filthy.

Sethera · 16/08/2024 20:35

We always stay in a dog-friendly holiday let, though our dog has long since gone to the rainbow bridge. We like the place so we keep going back. I don't notice any dog smell, even though we no longer have one so shouldn't be nose-blind to it.

DelilahBucket · 16/08/2024 20:38

We've just left a dog friendly holiday let and yes is reeked of dog. Hair everywhere too, the level of cleanliness was absolute shite. Not the first time we've had to endure that either.
The cottage we are now in does allow pets by prior request but it was spotless and smells lovely and clean.
You never know what you are going to get I suppose.

Echobelly · 16/08/2024 20:42

There were dog friendly accoutrements in the airbnb we stayed in a few weeks ago and I never got any sense of such doggy smell. We don't own dogs so I definitely would have noticed. Just because a place is dog friendly doesn't mean all or even most guests brought a dog along.

Tristar15 · 16/08/2024 20:48

It might smell. I would not book dog friendly for this reason. Risk of fleas, you don’t know where they’ve been. Best cleaning doesn’t get rid of all hairs or smells and there will be owners who let them onto the beds 🤢

Fireplacewatcher · 16/08/2024 20:50

Wow!

VivienneGlee · 16/08/2024 20:51

I’m probably one of the most suited posters on here to answer this question. I have exclusively lived in Airbnbs for the past 18 months. About 10 or so - I’ve lost count (don’t ask). From Devon to Warwickshire.

I have a dog so have had to stay at dog friendly property. Not one property has stunk, had stains or been unhygienic. Majority of air BnBs have had weekly cleaners come in followed by a deeper end of rental clean.

If you are going to a highly rated, well maintained property you have absolutely nothing to worry about. We inquired into buying one of property in fact.

I am a neat freak and some on here will say I’m used to the stench. Just not true.

We have been paying £1k/week so I’m sure cheaper options may not be as well maintained.

Even if the inside is clean you'll know that dogs have been pooing and weeing in the garden 🤮

One we stayed in was in the same garden as the owners- their dog came round in the morning and did a massive poop right outside our let. 😕

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 16/08/2024 21:47

As I have a dog, I stay in dog friendly accommodation. Only one place has stink and it was the carpets with a strong smell of piss, exacerbated by the hoover also having a strong piss smell. This was a disabled static caravan and i think the owner was unaware due to the strong amounts of carpet freshener that were sprayed to make it bearable and the hoover not having been used prior to check out. 🤢

I've never had any issue, anywhere else and we've stayed in pets only for close to 20 years.

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 31/08/2024 17:26

Thought I'd update the thread.
Yes it did smell doggy. It was worse in main bedroom upstairs, even though rules said dogs were not allowed upstairs and there was a stairgate to assist with this. The vacuum cleaner was unusable due to the dog smell it emitted and I had to shove a smelly rug away and give the place a good airing. Thankfully still had a nice time though.
Hoping holiday let websites start to allow "no pets" filtering on their listing pages.

Ugh, sounds like you made the most of it despite the stench. I have just this afternoon been looking around for a holiday let in the UK for our week in October and Sykes lets you select "property pet free" alongside the number of guests.

Gensola · 31/08/2024 17:39

Dog owners on a recent thread were all merrily saying they’d ignore rules about dogs not being allowed on beds and sofas in dog friendly holiday lets, confirmed my absolute aversion to ever renting a dog friendly place.

Roselilly36 · 31/08/2024 17:41

We own a holiday let and allow dogs, it never smells of dog, but we have all hardwood floors, leather sofas, no soft furnishings that would absorb doggy odours, and very good cleaners. On the rare occasions we visit, I would never know a dog had been there. We lost our own dog many years ago, so I am no longer used to the smell of dog, I would definitely notice if our holiday let smelt. I wouldn’t worry and enjoy your holiday.

I saw that - me too. People are so selfish. I always ask now about dog free accommodation. I've followed a number of accommodation providers for quite a long time - bit of a wish list - and untick any where it is all dog friendly. Not for me at all. I'm not allergic but do not want someone else's pet debris near me.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 31/08/2024 17:53

Our lets are dog friendly and odourless so you may be OK!

(I hate dogs so unbiased here!)

Boomer55 · 31/08/2024 17:55

Yes, to a non dog owner, anywhere a dog has stayed/lives will smell. It’s unavoidable.

But, the only way to avoid it is to book places that don’t allow dogs.🤷‍♀️

WiddlinDiddlin · 31/08/2024 17:56

Arrivapercy · 16/08/2024 09:07

We find the smell tends to be at the background level, immediately noticeable to a non-dog owner but not to a dog owner. It's not the smell of pee or poo accidents - more general "dog musk".

However what we do find is anyone with even mild allergies is affected. You can hoover up hair/skin but its the saliva - dogs WILL lick & mouth things and dribble. Unless carpets, sofa covers, cushions & long curtains have all been very recently washed, the dog saliva is there. Its a factor in the smell.

I have lived with dogs for almost 30 years, multiple dogs...

Never have I had a dog that licked the curtains!

Yes, some saliva may get on the carpet or sofa throw if they lie down with their head on the floor (typically only if the dog is a very dribbly loose-lipped type though)... but licking curtains?

You've clearly known some very weird dogs.

No such thing. All places have to allow guide dogs by law. There's no such thing as a "dog free" zone.

Needtodietnow · 31/08/2024 18:30

We have been to 2 dog friendly hotel rooms, 2 dog friendly cottages, 2 dog friendly air b&bs, a dog friendly lodge and a dog friendly boat. All were very clean and did not smell at all.

Cherrysoup · 31/08/2024 18:31

Ours didn’t smell and we arrived on the same day as someone with multiple dogs left!apparently en route to the massive local show, according to the comments in the guest book. The owner left us a review thanking us for leaving the place ‘incredibly clean’. I wiped down surfaces, swept thoroughly but nothing major. The floors were laminate wooden throughout and we didn’t let the dogs into the bedrooms.

Well obviously.

But there aren't that many guide dogs compared with the number of pet dogs. A holiday let is going to have a guide dog staying once in a blue moon, a "dog friendly" let might have two dogs every week.

Shall I take a nose peg?

Having stayed in a holiday cottage recently and not giving it a second thought, being a dog friendly cottage, until entering the the dog friendly cottage stench of dogs was fking out of order Had to open the garden doors as loads of flies in the room also trying to alleviate the problem with the smell only to have more flies fly back in, all being attracted to the outside tiled areas smelling of dog urine and a wheelie bin stinking of dog excrement left by the previous selfish dog owners Had to move the bin further up the garden up by the seating area, making this a no go area for any seating during our stay. Bought bottles of room scent for downstairs nauseating but better than the other. I expect the comeback will be, “what do expect from a dog friendly holiday let, certainly not this and why would you,
What I do expect, as other guests renting, deserve to be able to relax and unwind all in a holiday mode leaving with a positive attitude and sharing their experience with others.
