Taking food from a hotel breakfast buffet- cheeky??

Nannyogg134 · 15/08/2024 19:56

Was chatting with Brother and SIL about their upcoming holiday. They've got a long drive with 2 young DCs, so they've booked a chain hotel with free buffet breakfast part way along (to break up the drive.) DM said "Oh good, don't forget to make sandwiches for the drive later.".
This led to a whole family breakdown of what it is/isn't cheeky to do at a breakfast buffet 😂...

  • DM would happily take tupperware with her and fill up because 'it's been paid for' (I don't think she does take tupperware, I think it was a figure of speech!)
  • DH said he's too embarrassed to take anything more than a banana for later.
  • DSIL confessed that she can't resist taking pots of jam

I just wondered what everyone thought- Is it unreasonable to take from the buffet breakfast for 'later'?

You should have taken a bite out of it and handed it back !

😂

I would take a muffin and some bread and cheese if it was going to be difficult to get food later but I only have some muesli and yoghurt for breakfast. I think if I’d had a full English I would feel like an asshat then loading up for lunch on top.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 15/08/2024 21:25

I'm in the US and hotel breakfast buffets don't usually have the kind of things you could use to make a full lunch with. I don't have an appetite until mid-morning so I never eat that early in the morning, but I often take a muffin or biscuit (American biscuit) and a banana to eat later on the road.

I was on holiday last week and a woman took out a roll of sandwich bags and filled about 5 with fruit and pastries. She wasn’t even bothered and they were just sat there on the table until she left. My DP and I thought it was funny but no I would never take anything other than maybe a bit of fruit

I will take fruit and a pastry or mini muffin. If I’m with my (3yo) daughter I might take a roll and a piece of cheese because it’s really hard to find a simple lunch when out and about that she will eat.

Im fine with this because I’m petite and barely eat 1/4 of what I see other people eating at buffet breakfasts. I’ll have some toast, coffee and maybe a boiled egg or piece of cheese. I can’t eat that much at breakfast but might need a little something at 11am. I’m basically subsidising everyone who fills their boots for the day.

On honeymoon, we stayed at a hotel that did the most amazing breakfast , every day we had a three course breakfast, then didn't need lunch and had light evening meal, was that cheeky too ?

I think it’s cheeky to do this.

Tippeetwo · 15/08/2024 21:29

Bit chavvy I think so no.

ilovesooty · 15/08/2024 21:30

Rude, cheapskate behaviour.

It’s naff

I stayed at Premier inn recently. Took tea bags, fruit, croissants, cereal packets, spreads etc.at the all you can eat breakfast

GoldenLegend · 15/08/2024 21:31

I think it's incredibly bad form. I've been on holiday with friends who did this, and at lunchtime they ate the sandwiches they'd made and refused to go and have lunch with me, saying 'it's your own fault you haven't got anything'. It caused something of a rift. The only time it's ok is if you go and pay for what you've taken, which some hotels are happy with.

I eat very little tbf, but this surely must be a wind up. Made me laugh anyway. The image of them going for breakfast, judging fellow guests, and then decide stealing is justified. 😂 I wish for another season of Motherland!

What are you saying your husband did, because of your IBS?

I don't have IBS. I have IBD.
I was frequently unwell for around 40 minutes or so about 30-60 minutes after eating breakfast (pre medication which now makes this more tolerable).
As we were often out and about I would head to nearest hotel to try to get myself sorted - I reiterate, it would take about 40 minutes or so.
I spent so much of my illness pre-medication (and post), embracing life and not letting it stop me. Yes, I could have spent an hour in the room making sure I was okay, but it wasn't every day and fuck me if I was going to lie around when there's something to explore.
My DH (who possibly was a CF), would largely wander around the chosen 'toilet' hotel looking very European (because he is) and ingratiate himself into the breakfast buffet to enjoy a glass of something (in Italy and Spain it was often alcohol based).
Kept him from being very bored and me from feeling super guilty for taking the best part of an hour out of our day.

xsquared · 15/08/2024 21:32

I think if you have already put it on your plate but couldn't manage it or changed your mind at breakfast, then it's okay to save for later.

I've seen people pile plates high, but never noticed anyone making rounds of sandwiches!

Can you seriously not afford tea bags, or was it just the entitled thing? Pathetic.

Premierout · 15/08/2024 21:33

We do this all the time.

We often stay in Premier Inns (I have changed my name here to reflect that, and to avoid repercussions from this post!) and they do the amazing £9.99 breakfast with two kids eating free per adult. So I pay, kids eat free, and I take some breakfast up to DH who stays in the room. Not a cooked breakfast, but a couple of rolls and a muffin. I also take some rolls and muffins for lunch for the day.

It’s a buffet, there are people who’d probably eat all that ‘legitimately’ anyway, nobody goes short as a result of it and the food would otherwise end up in the bin. I don’t feel any guilt whatsoever, nor do I feel like I’m being cheeky or tight or anything else apart from savvy.

GoldilocksAndTheThreeBears · 15/08/2024 21:33

I think what's not on is the people who pile their plate high and leave a lot of it uneaten.

GoldenLegend · 15/08/2024 21:34

Dampshinygrass · 15/08/2024 21:15

@llamajohn wow you are rude.

And you're precious.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/08/2024 21:37

Pre Covid I travelled a lot with work. (Now it’s all bloody Teams meetings!) My usual was to go to breakfast, eat something like scrambled eggs on toast and some juice, then take a croissant and coffee back to my room and finish off my makeup before going to whatever I had on work-wise. I was generally on my own and didn’t want to hang about, and didn’t see the difference in whether I ate a croissant in the dining area or my hotel room.

No, I wouldn’t make sandwiches.

XlemonX · 15/08/2024 21:38

Since having young children, I always bring tuppaware when out eating. They never finish or eat enough/getting too distracted so whats left on their plate, I will chuck in the tuppaware to offer them again later…

Your dh is a true CF. There are no excuses. I have spent half my life looking for toilets just like you, it is horrible. No way in hell would my bored dh take advantage and steal things. Your husband is s thief, and it’s hardly charming, And ”looking very European”, what does that mean? We’re Scandinavian and look it, and I never once used it to be CF’s. Or my illness. You should be ashsmed of yourself, but entiitled people like you never be.

Dampshinygrass · 15/08/2024 21:42

@GoldenLegend clearly I am!

I still don’t see the problem with eating a piece of toast and taking some fruit for later.

50% of this thread have said that they do the same. Yet everyone is jumping on me because they think I’m judging them for how much they eat at breakfast. So unbelievably touchy. I don’t give a damn how much other people eat at breakfast. It’s just a straight observation that most people eat more. It’s actually pretty upsetting that the idea of eggs and bacon or pancakes at 8am makes me feel nauseous. I miss out on a lot!! So yeah, I’m gonna take that mini pain au chocolate for later thanks.

The last hotel I was in - a very smart one, paid £450 a night - outright encouraged me to take a couple bits for later, and even gave me a little cardboard box. Didn’t ask for one.

@WotsYourExcuse

another incredibly rude person, I'm fat I'm not a greedy pig, I'd put good money on eating far less than you in a day.

No offence to overweight people but most don't get that way by eating salad, let's be honest. I see so many overweight people in the Greggs next to my work (and pretty much every other fast food joint) and it just feels like a bit of a stretch to assume it's all down to a latent medical condition rather than the excessive sausage roll consumption you can clearly witness.

I eat 2000 cals most days but I burn it off with a physical job and lifting 3-4x a week.
