Taking food from a hotel breakfast buffet- cheeky??

Was chatting with Brother and SIL about their upcoming holiday. They've got a long drive with 2 young DCs, so they've booked a chain hotel with free buffet breakfast part way along (to break up the drive.) DM said "Oh good, don't forget to make sandwiches for the drive later.".
This led to a whole family breakdown of what it is/isn't cheeky to do at a breakfast buffet 😂...

  • DM would happily take tupperware with her and fill up because 'it's been paid for' (I don't think she does take tupperware, I think it was a figure of speech!)
  • DH said he's too embarrassed to take anything more than a banana for later.
  • DSIL confessed that she can't resist taking pots of jam

I just wondered what everyone thought- Is it unreasonable to take from the buffet breakfast for 'later'?

Not exactly - mostly cava and Prosecco based. We'd already had breakfast.
And I wasn't 'taking a shit'. Look up IBD. I could be in there unto 40 minutes trying to sort myself out

Sorry, didn’t mean to offend you.

PrettyFox · 15/08/2024 21:10

I sometimes take a banana or a yogurt for my toddler. More than that is cheeky.

Gangof7 · 15/08/2024 21:10

We went on a Caribbean cruise with 2 friends. They were both working and earning good money at the time. They took a soft roll and a hard boiled egg every morning to eat at the beach at lunch time 🤢

I live in an Asian country where many people come for holidays and I also stay in hotels frequently (few days every 2 months). I have never seen this happen at any of the buffets and I can’t imagine the hotels being okay with it either.

Oh, Asians do. In America in any case. Huge CF’s! 😅 Seen them repeatedly pack entire loafs of bread in plastic bags. And cakes, crroissants..everything. Always in plastic bags, and they couldn’t care less that noone else after them got anything.

Blankfaced · 15/08/2024 21:12

I'm not sure he actually has any, since that's the least masculine thing I've ever heard

oh lord another Andrew Tate fan. Are you mates with the poster who won’t let her toddlers pee sitting down because it’s not manly enough?

I will take fruit and a pastry or mini muffin. If I’m with my (3yo) daughter I might take a roll and a piece of cheese because it’s really hard to find a simple lunch when out and about that she will eat.

Im fine with this because I’m petite and barely eat 1/4 of what I see other people eating at buffet breakfasts. I’ll have some toast, coffee and maybe a boiled egg or piece of cheese. I can’t eat that much at breakfast but might need a little something at 11am. I’m basically subsidising everyone who fills their boots for the day.

Oh yes so fucking difficult to find ham, bread and cheese in this world...

Carebearsonmybed · 15/08/2024 21:13

I take as much as I can get away with.

Cangar · 15/08/2024 21:09

True! I can’t see why some would be on watch out duty and some not though. I was discrete and was taking hardly anything but there were people making up piles of sandwiches in full view.

I’ve been at two, and it was the same actually..

Edenmum2 · 15/08/2024 21:13

I'd take a bit, maybe a roll or two. I don't see it as any different from taking a doggy bag from a restaurant. I don't eat loads at once so I'd eat less than a lot of people at breakfast but I'd want to get my money's worth.

I'd be happy with being allocated a certain amount and then taking what's left for later if that would stop people taking the piss.

rookiemere · 15/08/2024 21:14

I wouldn't normally but on our recent holiday we had a long train trip coming up and knew that there wouldn't be a buffet car.
I made some rolls up and they were delicious, but I did try to be subtle about doing it and I did feel a bit cheeky about doing it.

Dampshinygrass · 15/08/2024 21:15

@llamajohn wow you are rude.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 15/08/2024 20:16

No a piece of fruit or a pastry is not acceptable and just as embarrassing.

Who gives a shit really? It's probably going in the bin otherwise.

Unless you're eating five at breakfast and then taking extra it doesn't really matter. They presumably account for the reality that some fat people will guzzle three pastries in a row so a normal person taking one for later is minor.

Us Brits just can't seem to get enough of this martyrdom and self flagellation.

Polkadottydot · 15/08/2024 21:16

I've taken part used jars of jam or honey, figuring they'd only be binned. I'd like to take bits for later but just couldn't for shame! Oh - DH took bacon he then didn't want but was embarrassed to leave it and took it for Polkadog.
Family next to us at last hotel took so much they made another mini breakfast buffet on the table , asked for porridge and vegetarian sausages and didn't eat any of it. So so rude.

SantoriniSunrise · 15/08/2024 21:17

If I did it I'd be keeping quiet.

LlynTegid · 15/08/2024 21:17

A banana or apple maybe, anything more I think is not OK.

llamajohn · 15/08/2024 21:18

Dampshinygrass · 15/08/2024 21:15

@llamajohn wow you are rude.

Well, making out as if they had no choice because they couldn't get food for their small child, but says they take cheese and bread, the most globally available foods. Please name a country you can't get bread and cheese in?

@Dampshinygrass

ohhh you're so petite.

that makes everything ok then.

I'm not petite (anymore) it doesn't mean I eat like a pig at a trough thanks very much!

@Nannyogg134

Because I'm overweight i often prefer just to take a coffee & whatever to my room, to get away from judgemental twats.

If the kids are with me I might take a couple of muffins or bits of fruit because they don't eat much breakfast, but are invariably 'starving' 15 minutes later when their metabolisms have been poked!

Bluesclues1 · 15/08/2024 21:19

It’s embarrassing and grabby. I’d assume people that do this are in the same camp as those who put a towel on a sun lounger at 6am.

Blankfaced · 15/08/2024 21:19

indeed, get the horse hair shirts at the ready people, I took a banana for later!!

Yeah, I can assure you staff know it no matter how quiet you think you are.

BigBurrata · 15/08/2024 20:31

I tried it once at a hotel in Barcelona and one of the staff stopped me and asked for the croissant back. Felt like a shoplifter!
Never dared since. 😀

You should have taken a bite out of it and handed it back !

@WotsYourExcuse

another incredibly rude person, I'm fat I'm not a greedy pig, I'd put good money on eating far less than you in a day.

MissingMoominMamma · 15/08/2024 21:21

I’ve taken a hard boiled egg and a croissant, but that was because we had an early flight and I didn’t have time to sit down to eat. I’d have been cross if anyone had tried to stop me!

Blankfaced · 15/08/2024 21:21

I also find it interesting that the most common statement on here amongst people against it is that it’s ‘embarrassing.’ But I guess if you were embarrassed you wouldn’t do it. Only Brits could be actively embarrassed for someone else doing something fairly innocuous!

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 15/08/2024 21:22

The mini jams and spreads always look so cute. But realistically they never get eaten, so I am a lot stronger at leaving them now.
