Taking food from a hotel breakfast buffet- cheeky??

Was chatting with Brother and SIL about their upcoming holiday. They've got a long drive with 2 young DCs, so they've booked a chain hotel with free buffet breakfast part way along (to break up the drive.) DM said "Oh good, don't forget to make sandwiches for the drive later.".
This led to a whole family breakdown of what it is/isn't cheeky to do at a breakfast buffet 😂...

  • DM would happily take tupperware with her and fill up because 'it's been paid for' (I don't think she does take tupperware, I think it was a figure of speech!)
  • DH said he's too embarrassed to take anything more than a banana for later.
  • DSIL confessed that she can't resist taking pots of jam

I just wondered what everyone thought- Is it unreasonable to take from the buffet breakfast for 'later'?

That’s Barcelona for you 😂 Love the directness of the staff there! I would have been tempted to stuff it in my mouth just for the comedy!

Edited

Thing is they probably wouldn’t have minded that as I’d have been eating it in the breakfast room!
They seemed to be very good at spotting anyone trying to slip out the door 😅

Since having young children, I always bring tuppaware when out eating. They never finish or eat enough/getting too distracted so whats left on their plate, I will chuck in the tuppaware to offer them again later…

I think that’s slightly different, as you’re not taking extra food, but more of a doggy bag. Eg. If they can’t eat a whole pizza, you take the uneaten half, rather than a fresh new pizza to eat later.

We do this all the time.

We often stay in Premier Inns (I have changed my name here to reflect that, and to avoid repercussions from this post!) and they do the amazing £9.99 breakfast with two kids eating free per adult. So I pay, kids eat free, and I take some breakfast up to DH who stays in the room. Not a cooked breakfast, but a couple of rolls and a muffin. I also take some rolls and muffins for lunch for the day.

It’s a buffet, there are people who’d probably eat all that ‘legitimately’ anyway, nobody goes short as a result of it and the food would otherwise end up in the bin. I don’t feel any guilt whatsoever, nor do I feel like I’m being cheeky or tight or anything else apart from savvy.

Somehow that is even worse than taking food for lunch. You make your husband stay in the room and feed him leftovers for breakfast??

BabstheBounder · 15/08/2024 21:45

My coat and cardigan pockets are for toast, croissants, fruit and little jam jars. Yum yum.

Andwegoroundagain · 15/08/2024 21:20

You should have taken a bite out of it and handed it back !

I might have done if it was my last day but I had two more nights to go so didn’t want to risk it!

Bigsigh24 · 15/08/2024 21:46

Yep seen this in Iceland and Disneyland Paris, probs cause it’s very expensive, but yeah a bit naff but also secretly admire this x

@GoldenLegend clearly I am!

I still don’t see the problem with eating a piece of toast and taking some fruit for later.

50% of this thread have said that they do the same. Yet everyone is jumping on me because they think I’m judging them for how much they eat at breakfast. So unbelievably touchy. I don’t give a damn how much other people eat at breakfast. It’s just a straight observation that most people eat more. It’s actually pretty upsetting that the idea of eggs and bacon or pancakes at 8am makes me feel nauseous. I miss out on a lot!! So yeah, I’m gonna take that mini pain au chocolate for later thanks.

The last hotel I was in - a very smart one, paid £450 a night - outright encouraged me to take a couple bits for later, and even gave me a little cardboard box. Didn’t ask for one.

Everyone is jumping on you?

I thought it was about 3 or 4 people.

That's entirely different. If you were in the US they'd offer to wrap your leftovers, and decent places in the U.K. will too if you ask.

Dampshinygrass · 15/08/2024 21:48

@AnnieMcFanny guess it just felt that way because all the emails came through at once 🙂.

DodoTired · 15/08/2024 21:49

At ClubMed (very nice AI) they just have boxes and bags so that people can prepare themselves a takeaway lunch at breakfast buffet, so that solves the problem. It’s mainly for those who will be missing lunch anyway, we aren’t talking about someone just hoarding food in their room, no?

I am meaning to also include hotel breakfast and buffets which does feel more cheeky.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/08/2024 21:50

I've just noticed the OPs NN...Nanny Ogg would stuff her drawers with pastries and take a few kippers for Greebo.Grin

mitogoshi · 15/08/2024 21:51

I'll take a banana or an apple, perhaps a pastry but no more however I stayed at a hotel in Scotland (near ski resort) where they actually left plastic sandwich bags on the buffet to make up sandwiches. If it's ai have no issues making lunch up for a day trip

When I was a rep, I'd actively encourage people to make themselves a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet, esp those who I knew were on a tight budget. Hell, I'd even give them ideas, and when I was in the 4* flagship hotel, the receptionists would join in and give people sandwich ideas 😂 no one cares, a lot of the food would just be wasted anyway.

Not all heroes wear capes! :)

but seriously, good on you and good point about food waste.

PassingStranger · 15/08/2024 21:53

It all goes to waste the leftovers anyway, better to be eaten.

Your dh is a true CF. There are no excuses. I have spent half my life looking for toilets just like you, it is horrible. No way in hell would my bored dh take advantage and steal things. Your husband is s thief, and it’s hardly charming, And ”looking very European”, what does that mean? We’re Scandinavian and look it, and I never once used it to be CF’s. Or my illness. You should be ashsmed of yourself, but entiitled people like you never be.

Well you do you and we'll do us. I will say no more except... UNCLENCH

morningtoncrescent62 · 15/08/2024 21:56

I'm in Team DH. Take out a piece of fruit for later (feeling like a criminal and expecting to be challenged if spotted by a member of staff) but there's no way I'd take a full packed lunch. It hasn't been paid for - the prices would have to go up considerably if everyone stocked up for the full day ahead.

Applesonthelawn · 15/08/2024 21:56

It's tacky. You pay for breakfast, not lunch too. It's like when people to to those "as much as you can eat" buffets and stuff their fat faces.

Howdidtheydothat · 15/08/2024 21:56

Have taken the odd item of food away when in a hurry, have also filled my coffee flask for the drive /train journey too. Meh, I think loading up boxes is a step too far, but saw this at an all inclusive in Egypt (was Egyptian families doing this) then they had an afternoon long picnic by the pool. No idea it was seen as acceptable or they were just CFs

Vizella · 15/08/2024 21:57

I’d rather eat a hearty breakfast at the hotel and skip lunch than eat moderately at breakfast and pack a moderate sandwich for later. It’s more socially acceptable to overeat than to try and trick the system.

Beenhereforever1978 · 15/08/2024 21:59

I work in a hotel with a ver posh breakfast buffet - if you're coming down near the end of service, take the damned food. We are going to bin it otherwise, things like cheeses and meats and pastries we simply can't put in the fridge and set out again tomorrow because it's a cross-contamination/temperature of storage thing.

Don't do it at the beginning of service though and please don't nick the little jams in jars.

Ask and we'll usually wrap it for you also. 😁

If the amount of food is the same, then what difference does it make to the hotel whether you have it all at once or save some of it for later?

I am very unclenched and can afford to pay for our holidays. No need to steal. You do you. Being CF’s and blaming it on you having a disease.

WhereDoBrokenHeartsGo · 15/08/2024 22:04

I stayed in a hotel close to Disneyland Paris recently and guests weren’t allowed to take bags into the breakfast room, not even handbags. I don’t really enjoy breakfast so I stayed in bed but my DH took the kids down and said they were turning people with bags away and making them leave them back in their bedrooms!

asterixa · 15/08/2024 22:07

@Pebbles16 Imagine if everyone with a chronic condition considered it an acceptable excuse to start stealing. Your husband can just as easily wait in a cafe and buy a drink, even carry a book. Such a strange attitude.
