Not sure how worried to be about the latest news on MPox (previously Monkey Pox). A couple of years ago I had some minor surgery and there were warnings/advice posters all over the hospital about this disease, then it all died down. Anyone worried about catching it? I wasn’t until I read that it can be caught from talking to someone, originally we were told that it was spread via sexual contact.

Scientists are alarmed at the high fatality rate and rapid spread of a new variant of the virus.

Just been listening to this on the news, yes it's concerning especially considering the WHO's response. No cases in the UK currently though they didn't say which countries outside of Africa do have cases.

Purplturpl · 14/08/2024 22:56

I came on here to see if there were any threads discussing this. As I wasn’t sure what to think either

CobaltQueen · 14/08/2024 23:08

Not worried at all. We had all this hype over MP a few months back and it disappeared from all media. I don't believe it is anything to worry about.

MeinKraft · 14/08/2024 23:15

It's sexually transmitted isn't it? No chance of me getting it then Blush

That was a milder strain back in 2022 I think, infections were quickly reduced by vaccinating those most at risk. This new strain is transmissible via close contact with an infected person, much like COVID and is reported to have a much higher fatality rate

ilovetomatoes · 14/08/2024 23:28

I’ve read in the guardian you can catch it from infected towels. Seems quite concerning. I’m usually quite chilled out about these things but paying close attention to this.

OMG I'm so sorry but this made me laugh so so much lmao 🤣 thanks for the entertainment lol

While you're worrying about that you won't be worrying about a carer in her fifties writing something in anger on a Facebook group and getting banged up for over a year for it.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/08/2024 00:15

Oh yay! She got remanded! Excellent - shouldn't have called for all refugees to be burned in the hotels then

Hope she gets convicted and a nice long stretch for being a racist, evil cunt

Tiredeveryday · 15/08/2024 00:21

That's something to be thankful for not worry about though?

MissEsmeWatson · 15/08/2024 00:30

But she didn't say that at all.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/08/2024 00:36

"Mass deportation now, set fire to all the f hotels full of the b* for all I care, while you're at it take the treacherous government and politicians with them."

The above is exactly what she said in the tweet

There's absolutely no wiggle room for nuance in that ^^

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/08/2024 00:37

No she said a mosque shouldn’t be protected but should be blown up with people inside it, which is obviously a much nicer thing to say.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/08/2024 00:39

That quote of the tweet is completely correct - I checked it on the daily mail, the guardian, and lbc

It's exactly as I've put

CarpeVitam · 15/08/2024 00:40

Well that went 'off topic' quickly! 🙄

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/08/2024 00:42

Re: monkey pox. I’d leave worrying about that to the government right now and hope that they have learnt something from the pandemic (we can hope right?). There’s no evidence it’s anywhere outside of Africa yet, so your risk right now is pretty low.

It’s a different group to the Mpox from a couple of years ago. This seems to be spreading rapidly and they aren’t exactly sure how. And has a higher fatality rate. They are better thought of as two different diseases at this point.

Welcome to Earth, here we are capable of worrying about more than one topic at a time.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/08/2024 00:43

Pandora - that's a different woman Grin

Firefly1987 · 15/08/2024 00:44

Don't know what to think really-I followed the MP outbreak a year or two ago, I remember some guy had it and it was the sickest he'd ever been, really painful. Everyone recovered in the UK though. Hopefully it's much of the same, agree it's worrying though if it's more contagious and has a higher death rate.

WhereIsMyWhippetAndFlatcap · 15/08/2024 00:44

MissEsmeWatson · 15/08/2024 00:30

But she didn't say that at all.

You're right she didn't say to burn refugees in hotels. She posted saying not protect mosques and blow mosques up with the adults in it.

I can understand why that's been taken as inciting violence. A lot of us were and are angry about the riots, anger can be expressed without posting for people to be blown up.

and has just been remanded

Didn’t mean it to sound like I was doubting you. She could easily have said that too.
