Not sure how worried to be about the latest news on MPox (previously Monkey Pox). A couple of years ago I had some minor surgery and there were warnings/advice posters all over the hospital about this disease, then it all died down. Anyone worried about catching it? I wasn’t until I read that it can be caught from talking to someone, originally we were told that it was spread via sexual contact.

Scientists are alarmed at the high fatality rate and rapid spread of a new variant of the virus.

@Gingernaut did they mention lockdowns or how exactly the world is going to respond to the threat of monkey pox?

No, but they did report on the fact that there are two manufacturers who could make the vaccines, no one has ordered much and the worry about Western/richer nations hoarding the vaccines, instead of sending vaccines to the affected and much poorer countries

No talk of lockdowns, but travel bans to affected countries reared it's ugly head

It's not that funny

Surely anyone coming from/transiting via an affected country should be quarantined until they are ‘safe’ ? That would prevent any lockdown scenarios occuring.

It's probably already in the country

weareallqueens · 18/08/2024 08:15

I'm not overly concerned - I think the media is still enjoying creating a bit of a health frenzy - but the timing is unfortunate, just coming out of the school holidays. I wonder if it'd be a good idea to get schools to keep an eye out for symptoms, as there will be school pupils who have spent time in infected areas.

And the incubation period is several weeks. That would be tens of thousands of people at a time. It’s not impossible as we know but incredibly hard to organise and as with Covid it would fairly quickly be coming from all over the world and therefore stopping people from certain countries would be pointless. A widespread vaccination program (starting in at risk countries) and lots of education would be more helpful

Exactly. It didn't stop covid

I'm from a country that vaccinated for smallpox quite a bit later than the UK, so yay me I'm relatively well protected.

Not that I'm remotely likely to be shagging or sharing towels with a poxy person.

But you could be sitting next to them at work or in a public place?

What has shagging got to do with it - different strain!

Re: monkey pox. I’d leave worrying about that to the government right now and hope that they have learnt something from the pandemic (we can hope right?). There’s no evidence it’s anywhere outside of Africa yet, so your risk right now is pretty low.

It’s a different group to the Mpox from a couple of years ago. This seems to be spreading rapidly and they aren’t exactly sure how. And has a higher fatality rate. They are better thought of as two different diseases at this point.

It's been found in Sweden and in Pakistan...

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 18/08/2024 15:04

As I said, smallpox vaccination.

It's spreading in Canada right now. Still relatively low numbers, and mostly in Toronto and Vancouver, but enough to be concerning.

That's the older less severe version of Mpox. No known cases of the one the WHO issued the global public health emergency warning about, as yet.
