Banksy graffitting all over the place should not be celebrated

That is it really

If it was treated as a piece of street art, ok then, but now the policy and local authorities are protecting it, has it gone a bit too far?

I agree with this, the pelicans etc are very basic. The rhino is quite accomplished though.

I thought the mountain goat was beautiful too. Atop a concrete post, was very effective.

Haha

Did you see Yoko Ono’s exihibition at the Tate

An empty ‘fart jar’ alongside a photo of her glutes…

An empty jar with an invisible smile…

It did make me laugh though

But at least she was inside a gallery and didn’t cause visual pollution

'Visual pollution' 😂Gets more hilarious and bizarre by the second!

Its not street art its a load of derivative rubbish. Banksy himself is an old, posh public school boy with a load of predictable opinions reflected in his "art"and is no way the edgy anti establishment rebel he thinks he is. He is so predictable that he has been faked loafs of time and people are not sure if its him or a fake. I would arrest him for graffiti just like anyone else.

No one gets arrested for graffiti ffs!

JaneDoeHere · 14/08/2024 15:48

I remember he did it on a side of a house I think? It caused the owners some problems and intimidation over keeping it because of people coming to see it and getting g rid of it and being abused for that too. I really felt for them. I think at the start I was more into it but I think he’s had his day and I do t agree with the double standards of him getting away with graffiti on other peoples property.

How do you know he's an old, posh, public schoolboy? I didn't think anyone knows his identity and it remains the subject of ongoing speculation.

Yabu, op. Art isn't just for art galleries, museums and people who grew up visiting stately homes. And I'm very much looking forward to seeing the police box, which is very close to where I work.

JaneDoeHere · 14/08/2024 15:50

The name put around is Robin Gunningham… but who really knows if that’s true!

CoffeeCantata · 14/08/2024 15:53

PPs saying that 'Banksy only does stencils' - can you imagine the skill which goes into making those stencils? That is the 'art' part, which takes place in a studio, I guess, and the application phase must be incredibly quick, planned and co-ordinated.

As to why 'he' hasn't yet been unmasked, I should think there's a whole Banksy team. I think Banksy is an individual (he comes from Bristol, I believe) but his work is definitely a team effort. I imagine there's a lot of reccying first, and the application is planned like a military operation. They must be dressed as refuse collectors or similar and they've probably practised all their moves elsewhere first. I'd love to see them at work!

As to those who say it isn't art...don't go there! It's pointless trying to define art. Art is anything a creator makes with the intention of making art. Whether it's good art is a different matter - only time, and in some cases, the art market, will tell. I should think that 98% of contemporary art will not be valued by posterity.

Personally I have no time for conceptualism. Yoko Ono's efforts sound as bad as I might have imagined her art would be.

Still don't like street art in general, though.

Don't they? I wish they would, though.

whatsappdoc · 14/08/2024 16:17

The pelicans may be basic but what makes Banksy (and other street artists) for me is the inclusion of the setting. A fish on the shop sign in this case.

Graffiti is against the law
Below is a brief overview of the different laws concerning graffiti:

  • Graffiti is an offence of criminal damage and can be reported to your local police force via 101. If prosecuted, the offender could face a fine or even imprisonment.
  • Under 16's are not permitted to buy aerosol paint cans.
  • Local authorities can issue fixed penalty notices for offences of graffiti.
  • Local authorities are responsible for cleaning it up from public buildings and fixtures. They can also clean it from private buildings and can bill the owner for the work.
Some UK Councils provide spaces called 'free walls' for graffiti artists to use for their art. To find where you nearest free walls are, contact your local authority. See the websites in related information to find your local authority.

So the discussion is why Banksy is celebrated if he is breaking the law?

Since art is subjective, who is to say that the other people doing gaffitti are also not artists and should also be discriminalised?

The idea that Banksy is some counter cultural anti establishment rebel is hilarious. It is obvious he is a posh public school Guardianista (just like the people who run this increasingly ramshackle country!).

LOL.

Has the ramshackle nature of the country increased significantly in the last 6 weeks? Or is the ramshackle nature due to the 14 years of Tory corrupt mismanagement?

I like that Banksy has mainstream appeal. I like the humour and the simplicity, the shrewd observations, the social/political commentary. I like that art doesn't have to be high brow and can reflect the grimy reality of the urban sprawl. The ideas and message are as important as the execution.
Similar to a pp, I find Rothko the epitome of emperor's new clothes in art. Banksy is far more entertaining.

This series of work is not the most inspired however - though the rhino humping the micra did make me chortle.

Are you related to him @Marinade? . We're allowed to think your hero is crap and we don't want to see his "artwork" ruining our view. He did one near me in Reading and all the plebs were going to look at it but it was totally mundane.

Oh dear ... I was one of those plebs Grin
