That is it really

If it was treated as a piece of street art, ok then, but now the policy and local authorities are protecting it, has it gone a bit too far?

You will love where I live then. I like seeing the dodgy graffiti.
Near me, someone has sprayed "baby killer" on someone's garden wall. Another one is "grass". I have seen a few " pedo" ones.
One of my faves is one that says "stay away".
I want to know the background to all of them.

Such a shame they cannot spell paedo

jen337 · 14/08/2024 08:48

Interesting why we tolerate corporations plastering our public spaces with their garish advertising, yet oppose something creative and artistic.

greengreyblue · 14/08/2024 07:49

Does anyone actually know who he is?

Who cares? A man with a stencil and a couple of cans of spray paint?
There are some fantastic graffitti artists around this country. He produces largely boring black and white shite

The one near me isn't being protected 🤣 Was taken down the next day and they said if no one collects it, it'll go in a skip (cat one)

Oooh I'll happily have it!

I feel sorry for the owners of the surfaces he paints on. They then have the burden of "protecting" the work to avoid someone damaging their property to steal it. In that respect he's a bloody nuisance.

I think it hilarious when the smaller ones have been stolen so quickly (the road sign and the satellite dish).

This!

whatsappdoc · 14/08/2024 09:17

Love him/her/they! They have created a unique brand. The shredding was genius. Ditto Dismaland. And I'm convinced the stolen wolf was a publicity stunt by them and it will turn up somewhere else in the future.

Isitovernow123 · 14/08/2024 09:18

We visited a Stavanger, Norway, in February. There was some amazing street art everywhere that reminded me of some of the work that Banksy and other do.

These were my favourites

Earlier stuff was good, this latest animal stuff is not to my untrained eye. Solid black stencilling a generic cat is hardly the stuff of masters. I have seen much more skill and talent in other street art.

So in a nutshell, people who are interested in or enjoy different things to you should be denigrated and called names because of it? And plenty of people take art and artists seriously @UnicornSpace ; just because you don't come across them doesn't mean it doesn't happen?

What are your interests, out of curiosity? Then I can slag them off as being shite and sneer at you for liking them, or is reverse snobbery the only kind that's allowed?

JustMarriedBecca · 14/08/2024 09:22

Am I the only one worried we're getting 40 days of animals and then a massive ark?

Just saying.

I don’t enjoy his “art” either, what he does requires little artistic talent.

Plot twist. Last artwork is “repent and be saved” as famous Bristolian street artist gets religion.

FastFood · 14/08/2024 09:34

I love modern art, I have some respect for street art but pleasem Banksy is shit - it's the stencil equivalent of Gilbert & George. Gimmicky, pseudo controversial art.

I much much prefer Tracy Emin.

Thelnebriati · 14/08/2024 09:39

How can you tell if its a real Banksy and not some pseud with a spray can?

timenowplease · 14/08/2024 09:40

Marinade · 13/08/2024 22:59

Who is it derivative of? You do realise that it is based on stenciling, who has he based his work on? Are you appraised of his work or just spouting nonsense?

I love that Banksy gave the model village in Great Yarmouth (Merrivale) a much needed boost to funds after covid. We had visited during covid and chatted to the owners about it's effect on the business including the enormous amount all the hand sanitiser stations were costing.

The little stable sold for 1 million apparently so no one would be foolish enough to put the recently removed cat in the bin unless they dislike money.

The "Go big or go home" stable no doubt boosted visitor numbers too so a double win. I believe a replica of the stable is on display now and I'll find out for sure this week as I am on holiday in Norfolk again this week and will have a day in Yarmouth. I love a model village.

Banksy's model stable

Banksy stable at model village could fetch 'seven figures'

A miniature stable found at a model village is due to be sold amid security fears.

Its not street art its a load of derivative rubbish. Banksy himself is an old, posh public school boy with a load of predictable opinions reflected in his "art"and is no way the edgy anti establishment rebel he thinks he is. He is so predictable that he has been faked loafs of time and people are not sure if its him or a fake. I would arrest him for graffiti just like anyone else.

The Bristol Cathedral Choir School is a state funded academy.

If his identity is correctly surmised his parents were modest m/c, not ‘posh’.

Many artists, including ‘old masters’ are forgeable / copy able. There’s a TV series based on experts not always being sure.

I always thought "Give Peas a chance" on the M25 was a quality piece of art. 🤔

I wanted to post that, so I’ll just add to its place in British culture

Peas was originally just a graffiti tag, but “give” and “a chance” were added when they had legal problems (I think it was multiple graffiti arrests and potentialy escalating to time in custody)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalfont_Viaduct

In 2018 it was overpainted by “Helch” which quite rightly resulted in outrage, but has also gone into legend

https://www.artofthestate.co.uk/london-graffiti/helch-graffiti/

I’m heading that way in a couple of weeks, so I’ll keep my eye out for it’s current status

tommika · 14/08/2024 10:12

There is a long tradition of graffiti in history, going back to cave paintings etc

But it wasn’t consigned to ancient hunting scenes, classic basic tags and toilet cubicle style messages are firmly in history.

My arm is tattooed with a copy of ancient grafitti from the Maes Howe burial mound, which also features many of just name tags/ “I woz ere” etc, and statements about the alleged virtue of local ladies. (One by Helgi states that they were carving whilst Thorni appears to have been busy with one such lady)

  • "Ofram the son of Sigurd carved these runes"
  • "Haermund Hardaxe carved these runes"
  • "These runes were carved by the man most skilled in runes in the western ocean"
  • "Tholfir Kolbeinsson carved these runes high up"
  • "This howe Vermundr carved"
  • "Ottarfila carved these runes"
  • "Benedikt made this cross"
  • "Arnfithr Matr carved these runes with this axe owned by Gauk Trandilsson in the South land"
  • "Tryggr carved these runes"
  • "Arnfithr the son of Stein carved these runes"
  • "Thorir"
  • "Orkis' son says in the runes he carves"
  • "futhorkhnias trmly"

Helch is also over the bridge as you get onto the M3 from the M25.

I miss give peas a chance though.
