To be pissed about holiday use of washing machine

Very trivial compared to real issues.

We've been at a lodge in the Lakes for a few days and ready to do a wash of mucky kids' clothes, yes a privilege to be able to do this before we go home and our own washing machine going.

A family who turned up this morning put a load in and left it all day, we didn't get back til late aft and it was still there. I was happy to take it out and put ours on but DH said give it an hour. So we did then the CF went and put another load on, we just missed the time of it to do ours and just didn't expect this.

Currently watching, another 2 hours, to do ours. I mean, who turns up a cabin site to do all their washing? We washed, ironed etc so all clothes were ready and I had no intention of doing a wash but hey who would turn down ready to go home with clean clothes?

Lady in question has meanwhile put a third wash on. 3 hour cycles and dryer after. Surely one doesn't do this, a certain etiquette to give others a chance? Tomorrow I will be taking the wet clothes out if the same.

I've been petty and taken some washing powder so I can do ours tomorrow before she uses it all! Xx

Glad you’re enjoying your holiday! 😂

2Hot2Handle · 12/08/2024 22:16

This would annoy me too, but honestly, if I found a load had finished and there was a basket handy, I’d put the clothes in it and put your own in. Then set a timer, so that you can get yours out when it’s ready. If the other guest says anything, explain that a load was left all day when you needed to do some washing and leaving it in the machine would have it smelling, so you were doing them a favour, while using the shared facilities yourself!

Snacksgalore · 12/08/2024 22:17

I’m guessing someone who is on a multi part holiday.

Wonkywinky · 12/08/2024 22:18

V selfish
I'd be the same as you

Flossyflop · 12/08/2024 22:20

It seemed like a good convenience but now it’s become a chore and you’re on holiday so give up and let it go.

Just do it when you get home if it’s taking up your day and headspace.

ThursdayTomorrow · 12/08/2024 22:21

The amount of washing they are doing would annoy me too OP but isn’t it usual at a laundrette to take out others washing once it is finished, put it on the side, and put your own washing in?

SpecialKate · 12/08/2024 22:22

You mean "pissed off" not "pissed".

S0livagant · 12/08/2024 22:23

I'd assume they'd been staying elsewhere previously, moving from place to place, so had washing to do. If it finishes take it out, or just talk to them, they can't mind read. If you have enough to last until you get home then I'd just wait though.

I agree. You've now spent a day of your holiday watching a washing machine and thinking about laundry! Go do something fun, and deal with it when you're not on holiday.

(Being able to do laundry on holiday isn't a privilege in my view btw. I don't go on holiday to do laundry.)

MichaelAndEagle · 12/08/2024 22:24

Maybe they arrived from somewhere else and haven't come from home?

Sweetteaplease · 12/08/2024 22:24

Use your words. Does she know that you're waiting to use it? Take her clean washing out and put it in a basket, then use the machine. Yes it's rude, but be proactive fgs

Yes, this is the normal thing to do. It's not the other person's fault the OP didn't empty the machine and crack on.

HettieBettyBoo · 12/08/2024 22:28

I couldn’t get annoyed about this. Just take your washing home, what’s the drama about having to do washing before going home? They’re not a CF if you didn’t take their washing out and put yours in tbh, the washing facilities are there for everyone to use.

MaggieFS · 12/08/2024 22:31

The etiquette* is that if someone's load has finished you can remove it, but place it nicely somewhere e.g. in a basket or on top of a machine. The etiquette is also that if someone else does this to your wash, you don't get pissy.

It's first come first served to use them. If someone is doing back to backs excessively then have a word or leave a note. But no one who needs to do three loads of washing is going to wait just in case someone else wants a turn but hasn't said anything.

Loads of reasons why someone ARRIVES with washing, depends where they've come from, kid might have been car sick, fallen into a river, all sorts.

*from my backpacking days; granted that's a bit more uncouth than lodges

Pumpkintopf · 12/08/2024 22:32

Not sure other guest can be called a cf when presumably she'd have no idea you are quietly fuming and wanting to do some washing?

Agree with others maybe a multi centre holiday and also if you can manage without washing on holiday taking up your time and headspace why wouldn't you?

Turophilic · 12/08/2024 22:36

YABU to get annoyed about it - that family presumably have no idea you’re itching to pounce on the laundry facilities.

Next time just move it on into a basket like you would at a laundrette.

ThinWomansBrain · 12/08/2024 22:36

We have a communal laundry in my apartment block - don't even worry with baskets, just plonk it on top of the driers - if people can't be bothered to remove it, it's moved for them if someone else wants the machine.

OneCoolPearlOP · 12/08/2024 22:39

I don't understand - how many machines shared between how many people?

DodoTired · 12/08/2024 22:47

Maybe they are on extended travels around the UK or Europe 🤷‍♀️ I certainly had 4 back to back laundry cycles in Thailand!

Twofifty · 12/08/2024 22:54

The best thing about being on holiday is not having to do laundry!

tulippa · 12/08/2024 22:57

Have you spent a whole day of your holiday thinking about laundry?

InWalksBarberalla · 12/08/2024 22:59

Guessing they are on an extended trip so didn't arrive at the cabin from home, and might not be going home next either. Really couldn't give laundry this much headspace on holiday - just do it at home if you have enough clothes for the rest of your holiday.

HavingABitOfAMare · 12/08/2024 23:00

Seems like a perfect opportunity to speak up and tell her you just want to put one wash load on.

Also no idea why your husband decided you should wait another hour.

DappledThings · 12/08/2024 23:05

yes a privilege to be able to do this before we go home and our own washing machine going.
A privilege you've pointlessly chosen to turn into something that's wound you up all day. Let it go Elsa.

And agree with a PP you mean pissed off not pissed. But having a few drinks on holiday would be a far better way to spend it that getting annoyed about washing machines.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 12/08/2024 23:06

Don’t listen to your DH next time 🤷‍♀️
