To be pissed about holiday use of washing machine

Very trivial compared to real issues.

We've been at a lodge in the Lakes for a few days and ready to do a wash of mucky kids' clothes, yes a privilege to be able to do this before we go home and our own washing machine going.

A family who turned up this morning put a load in and left it all day, we didn't get back til late aft and it was still there. I was happy to take it out and put ours on but DH said give it an hour. So we did then the CF went and put another load on, we just missed the time of it to do ours and just didn't expect this.

Currently watching, another 2 hours, to do ours. I mean, who turns up a cabin site to do all their washing? We washed, ironed etc so all clothes were ready and I had no intention of doing a wash but hey who would turn down ready to go home with clean clothes?

Lady in question has meanwhile put a third wash on. 3 hour cycles and dryer after. Surely one doesn't do this, a certain etiquette to give others a chance? Tomorrow I will be taking the wet clothes out if the same.

I've been petty and taken some washing powder so I can do ours tomorrow before she uses it all! Xx

Oh why gross!

Because......OTHER PEOPLE!!!!

This will be the same person who wont use public loos or wont keep their toothbrush within 500 m of a loo because of poo crumbs......

As others have said, some people go on longer holidays with multiple stays. When we travel to Europe from Australia for a month I make sure we stay somewhere with a washing machine at least 2-3 times during the trip. And the minute we arrive I’m heading straight to the laundry! I wouldn’t go out and leave it there all day but if it’s full and finished you just remove the previous person’s washing and put it in the basket.

Also do not relate to excitement about taking clean clothes home. Doing laundry on holiday is only done through necessity.

MixedCouple2 · 13/08/2024 01:38

That is standard in shared accommodation. You remove the washing and out on top or to the side. If people fail to set timers thats their problem.

CasperGutman · 13/08/2024 05:59

We're just back from a fortnight's holiday. We did two loads of washing at a camp site with a laundry room halfway through the trip. Put the first load in mid-morning, and went back when it was due to finish to find the damp clothes sitting in the laundry bag we'd left on one side. No drama: the machine must have taken less time than expected and someone else had taken the reasonable approach and cracked on with using the machine themselves. We'd left the laundry bag in front of the machine for exactly this eventuality. I returned when their load finished, did the same with their stuff and put our second load in.

YWBU to rage silently and "give them another hour". Just take their stuff out and get on with it!

Sharing washing machines is gross. Do it at home.

What?! Why is it gross?
I'm sure you've been to a public toilet or touched door handles, which is probably worse.

This week Mumsnet has given me peeing in the sea is disgusting and using a shared washing machine is gross.
How do some people get through life?

You've got to wonder!

You mean "pissed off" not "pissed".

In this context it means pissed off. No need to highlight, you know exactly what OP meant Hmm

So why not use the correct phrase instead of one that has a different specific meaning. It's worth pointing out.

hockityponktas · 13/08/2024 06:49

I think you’ve given this far too much headspace seeing as you're supposed to be enjoying a holiday!
The etiquette is usually just take it out and pop somewhere suitable if it’s finished and crack on with yours.

Peonies12 · 13/08/2024 06:49

You should have just taken it out. But honestly you really should have enjoyed your holiday!

With great anxiety!

OP stop getting so stressed about the washing, is your DH equally stressed? I doubt it. You don't need to defer to anyone for washing etiquette, just take the wet washing out of the machine and do yours.

The drama!

Ponoka7 · 13/08/2024 00:24

The problem was that you listened to your DH. She wasn't a CF.

The problem is that OP even vocalised the non issue.

How are they meant to know you are waiting?

Telepathy

Simonjt · 13/08/2024 06:56

We’ve been camping for a week, we’re now in a holiday park for a few days, so when we arrived yesterday my husband did two loads of washing as soon as we arrived. He did them back to back, so there is a chance someone missed out on a slot as he put the second load in as soon as the first had finished.

Its standard to take clothes out when a load has finished in communal laundry rooms, a lot of people on holiday are doing things, so don’t have the time to sit by a washing machine.

Springadorable · 13/08/2024 07:05

So if her washing was sat in the machine all day then it's only you and her who wants to use it? Seems fine.

PeriIsKickingMyButt · 13/08/2024 07:08

You were very silly not to just take it out and put yours on. She's selfish but you were too reticent and lost out.

Is she selfish? Or just unaware?

You mean "pissed off" not "pissed".

Not if the OP is American.

Twinklefloss · 13/08/2024 07:12

You’ve got a DH problem here.

Roselilly36 · 13/08/2024 07:15

I would have taken the washing out too, I wouldn’t have even thought to tell my DH 😂 or phone a friend for advice!

We stayed in a lodge a couple of years ago, the family in the lodge next to us, did so much washing it was unreal, even the kids winter coats were washed and on the airers, it was an absolute heatwave at the time.

dontstopmenowimhavingagoodtime · 13/08/2024 07:17

Twinklefloss · 13/08/2024 07:12

You’ve got a DH problem here.

Why?

Because he said leave it an hour?

OPs the problem, it was not even something to discuss with her DH. Just take the washing that had finished out of the machine and do your own.

No need to ask DH opinion, but as she did ask she got an opinion and then wants to blame him..

Pathetic!

Gettingbysomehow · 13/08/2024 07:20

Honestly mumsnet and laundry. I dont think I've ever been up to my neck in laundry everyday even when I had kids. I have no memories of doing laundry even though I must have.

Purplebiscuitwithsprinkles · 13/08/2024 07:32

@DappledThings Because there are plenty of different meanings on Mumsnet. OP might be American and using the term in her language context. We've all watched enough American TV to know. It's not hard to work out she doesn't mean drunk or that something is off angle (construction industry). Fed up of the correction police. Let people just type, vent etc and be done.

@DappledThings See @Elphame comment too.
