To be pissed about holiday use of washing machine

Very trivial compared to real issues.

We've been at a lodge in the Lakes for a few days and ready to do a wash of mucky kids' clothes, yes a privilege to be able to do this before we go home and our own washing machine going.

A family who turned up this morning put a load in and left it all day, we didn't get back til late aft and it was still there. I was happy to take it out and put ours on but DH said give it an hour. So we did then the CF went and put another load on, we just missed the time of it to do ours and just didn't expect this.

Currently watching, another 2 hours, to do ours. I mean, who turns up a cabin site to do all their washing? We washed, ironed etc so all clothes were ready and I had no intention of doing a wash but hey who would turn down ready to go home with clean clothes?

Lady in question has meanwhile put a third wash on. 3 hour cycles and dryer after. Surely one doesn't do this, a certain etiquette to give others a chance? Tomorrow I will be taking the wet clothes out if the same.

I've been petty and taken some washing powder so I can do ours tomorrow before she uses it all! Xx

Surely you wait there and tell her you need the machine? How does she know someone else is wanting to use it. Might be many reasons why she didn’t get to do the washing before arrival

OvernightOatsAgain · 13/08/2024 07:46

People do washing while they are away on holiday??? Unless you're on an extended trip, just why? You're on HOLIDAY!!! (misses the point entirely ......... )

@DappledThings Because there are plenty of different meanings on Mumsnet. OP might be American and using the term in her language context. We've all watched enough American TV to know. It's not hard to work out she doesn't mean drunk or that something is off angle (construction industry). Fed up of the correction police. Let people just type, vent etc and be done.

@DappledThings See @Elphame comment too.

It annoys me enough to comment. It's not like someone using ass instead of arse when they're not American even though that's also silly. They are two words with the same meaning. Pissed is the same word with a different meaning.

It pisses me off.

The washing machine equivalent of leaving a towel on a sun bed all day 😄 I have considered throwing such towels in the pool. I haven’t ofc but do think about it 😉

Don’t do that with her washing. I think it would’ve been okay to take it out and put it in a basket though.

ExpressCheckout · 13/08/2024 08:01

I mean, who turns up a cabin site to do all their washing?

The same kind of people who want to pop a load in just before they leave, I suppose. 🙄

KickHimInTheCrotch · 13/08/2024 08:01

I always do a few loads of washing on holiday, means you don't have to take 7 full outfits + spares x number of people going so cuts down on packing. And I hate having dirty, smelly stuff hanging around for days.

But this person doesn't know you are waiting, they are probably trying to bosh a few loads out because they have a spare day and are none the wiser that you are quietly seething. Be a grown up and take control of the situation rather than ask your DH what to do or spend all day watching the launderette.

Superhansrantowindsor · 13/08/2024 08:02

I’m with the pissed off people.

Blondiie · 13/08/2024 08:03

YABU. You can’t expect other people to not do washing in case a different person they don’t know about might want to do some. It would be nice if the machine was empty but it wasn’t. You made a decision not to remove the other persons stuff even though you knew it had been there all day and that decision is why your clothes are dirty and hers are clean. You must have seen this woman to know it’s the same person but you have decided not to say to her that you are waiting for the machine - you are just expecting her to know. You can’t be completely passive and expect other people to just know what you want and adjust their behaviour.
There are lots of reasons why someone hasn’t arrived at a place directly from home with clean, ironed, clothes.

Flibflobflibflob · 13/08/2024 08:06

I would move it and pop my stuff in. I have no problem with someone needing to do loads of washing but it’s reasonable to space it out so other people can use it too.

Lots of people do washing on holiday - some people go away for a month, we go on very active holidays where clothes get dirty and sweaty, soaked in sea water etc. Not everyone has the same sort of holiday as you.

Also the washing still needs to be done eventually so doing a load or two on holiday cuts down on the work when you get home.

tissueboxandcandles · 13/08/2024 08:10

This is entirely due to your DH not knowing the etiquette of holiday site laundry facilities.
As lots of pp have said, you turn up, a finished load is in a machine, you take it out and put it carefully in a basket or bag and put your own in. There are usually baskets there for this purpose.
(What you don't do though is put someone else's washing into a dryer on a hot setting and ruin all their clothes. Somebody did this to ours once and I had to replace a lot of stuff).

PoppysAunt · 13/08/2024 06:05

What?! Why is it gross?
I'm sure you've been to a public toilet or touched door handles, which is probably worse.

I doubt that very much. There is a subset of MN posters who never touch anything outside their own home.

I do wonder how they manage in life!

SoManyTshirts · 13/08/2024 08:17

A friend who Airbnb’s his upstairs flat told me that some guests use the washing machine and tumble drier constantly - particularly those from Wales. No idea why this might be, he thinks they bring their laundry with them!

Dulra · 13/08/2024 08:19

Should have taken the load out as others have suggested. If weren't comfortable with that you should have left your load next to washing machine so they new there was a queue to use it

This definitely happens, we share a washing line with an Airbnb and last week there was washing out every fine day, including sheets and towels on the day they arrived. They were not from Wales though.

I'm still reeling at the ironing everything before they went away 🤣

TinyTear · 13/08/2024 08:57

Maybe the OP is pissed, maybe while sh was waiting the extra hour she had a bottle of wine or two

I've occasionally done washing on the last day, so we come home with clean clothes. That can be helpful if you have a busy week ahead

twentysevendresses · 13/08/2024 09:02

Your husband is an idiot...and you're not much better listening to him! Why the actual fuck would he insist you 'wait an hour'??? 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Also...stop stressing about sodding laundry when you're on holiday! This whole scenario is just mad! 😵‍💫

The biggest idiot is OP as an adult needing her DHs opinion!

FFS, it's washing, get on with it.

Hakunatomato · 13/08/2024 09:06

Just put your dirty washing in a black bag and in your holiday bag. Do it when you get home. Recreational Indignation at its finest.

LlynTegid · 13/08/2024 09:09

Taking it out, or even going and talking to the people whose washing it is (expressed as doing them a favour by talking to them).

Haroldwilson · 13/08/2024 09:12

Maybe they've had a sickness bug or have a bed wetter or disabled child or threadworms/nits or menopausal hot sweats or who bloody knows.

If you can't use the machine, get on with your holiday. I wouldn't spend my holiday being cross with a stranger for doing laundry.
