To get “girls” stuff when I search for “boys”

This is so fucking annoying.

I get this problem on so many websites. I specifically select the “boys” category and then results show a load of clothes clearly aimed for girls.

This example is from M&S. My exact actions;

Kids tab > 3 for 2 on kids Clothing > Boys (the options are view all, view boys or view girls.

These are the very first results that display. It’s clearly all designed with girls in mind. I get you’re allowed to dress your boy in pink and animal print, but I’d prefer not to for now. He can wear what he wants when he’s old enough to choose.

You might say this is a fly in the system but I have also frequently had this problem previously on Next and H&M.

I messaged Next once about it as I thought it was a glitch on the app. Their response was to tell me to use the web version, which had the same issue.

This is very much first world problems but it’s soooo bloody annoying!

I find it annoying as well. Yes clothes are just clothes, but most people aren't dressing their boys in pink leggings are they?

yet you wouldn’t bat an eyelid at a girl in blue right? Maybe this is the nonsense that needs to stop. All colours for all kids

🤨 hoodies and leggings require a vagina? I hadn't realised.

We're past the bullshit era of boys only being allowed to wear blue dinosaurs and diggers and girls only being allowed to wear pink, sparkle and unicorns.

You have to search through clothes you don't like to find clothes you do like, that's just shopping.

YANBU, I find it annoying too. Clarks are brilliant because you do get the traditional boys and traditional girls school shoes... But hate websites like smiggle, Smyth's also where it's so hard to find gender based toys!!! You have to go by colour or category, which doesn't help me find what I want! They should bring it back and if you don't want to use it you don't have to, but at least it's there for the people who do want to!

And kids can wear what they like, but if I'm browsing clothes for my boys I'm not going to buy pink, nor would most parents. I would shop elsewhere if the whole site was unisex, because I can't be bothered to wade through butterflies to find things my children will wear.

Butterflies would be extinct if there were no male butterflies you know.
And dinosaurs would have gone extinct a lot earlier if there had been no female dinosaurs.

Great. And if your boys want to wear butterflies, don't use the filters.

berksandbeyond · 12/08/2024 08:33

You say kids can wear what they like - have you asked your boys what clothes they’d like to wear? You’ll say ‘they won’t wear pink’ but what you mean is that you won’t buy it. In case their willies fall off? At least be honest 😂

Sunshine9218 · 12/08/2024 08:33

Don't think they should have either, just kids clothes. It especially bugs me when they make pink dinosaur stuff for girls, if they like dinosaurs just put them in the 'boy' coloured stuff

Fluufer · 12/08/2024 08:32

Great. And if your boys want to wear butterflies, don't use the filters.

And if your boys only want to wear blue, filter by blue.

Works both ways mate!

You know I had never thought of asking my children what they like? Thanks for that revolutionary idea!

Mmmm what are gender-based toys because I can't think of any?! This is a very old fashioned way to think

Why not though? My DH has a lilac sort of colour polo shirt, DS1 (12) has a hoodie with a pink tie dye effect on it and DS2 (4) has various pink leggings and tops with pink/hearts/rainbows on as that’s what he likes. If I’d have just looked in ‘traditional’ boy sections he wouldn’t have found those things - it doesn’t take long to go through a website of clothes in the right size once you’ve filtered to the price, size and item you want.

Wait til the teen years when your boys / their friends start wondering if they’re REALLY boys because they didn’t fit the stereotype of cars and football, and then you’ll maybe realise why it’s healthier if they’re just.. clothes

hello?? the 1950's want their mindset back

Luuise · 12/08/2024 08:47

I only get your screen when I click 3 for 2 of kids clothes. There has been no mention of boy/girl at this point for me. Then when I filter boys I get the second picture.

Screamingabdabz · 12/08/2024 08:49

This would irritate the hell out of me too op. I’m not sure I understand what the problem is with gendered clothing.

mondaytosunday · 12/08/2024 08:53

Never had this problem. Search for boy get boy stuff. Just did it now with M&S and while there are some girls in the pics it's because those particular items are unisex. Most of it is clearly boy clothes.

PerfectTravelTote · 12/08/2024 08:54

Girls and boys clothes are sized differently, particularly as the get older. Eg the sleeves are longer in the boys.

Public service announcement: unless the toys are operated by the genitals (in which case they are NOT toys for children) ALL toys are suitable for ALL children. As are all careers, all clothes and all opportunities. Don’t shrink the possibilities your child has on offer.

Catza · 12/08/2024 09:03

Cocobeau · 12/08/2024 07:48

Did you follow the steps I described? No, I haven’t added any filters on that page because I followed the websites own link to view “boys”. You’d kind of assume they would have already done the filtering for you, or else there’d be no point in them linking to boys and girl separately

I just followed the exact steps you described and all clothes I see is definitely unisex - graphic Ts and pastel trackies. Can't see any frilly tops and leopard leggings at all. You must have gone quite far down the rabbit hole to pull the screenshot.

5128gap · 12/08/2024 09:05

They're signalling that they don't collude with gender norms. They are using the boys and girls categories because sizing and shape can sometimes differ, but making the point that they as a company believe that any style and colour is suitable for either sex.

Catza · 12/08/2024 09:08

Fluufer · 12/08/2024 08:08

But they are happy to dress girls in blue ones. a bit of a double standard, isn't it? When I was growing up, I had a lot of navy clothes. The colour looked good on me, pink didn't. I am still quite irritated by pink colour and can't even paint my nails in pink. I also mostly wore trousers and jeans and only had two dresses both of which I absolutely hated to wear. Nobody questioned my mum but god forbid you put a pink shirt on a boy!

NowImNotDoingIt · 12/08/2024 09:08

If you go on the website in 3 for 2 and filter by boys these are the results.

To get “girls” stuff when I search for “boys”
TwinklyAmberOrca · 12/08/2024 09:09

Because most clothes don't need a gender and are suitable for both.

It's only when puberty hits that some clothes have a different fit e.g. trousers with wider hips and smaller waist for girls.
