To think a lot of homes are “soulless” and all people care about is size?

I love homes that are full of personality, stuff picked up around the world in trips, fleamarket finds, family objects, homes that are not perfect but keep your eyes “busy” when looking and fully reflect the life of people that live within them and make you feel warm when you go in.
I very rarely come across such homes, the majority of the ones I see (in RL and online) tend to be very boring with no personality whatsoever and people mainly seem to be focussed on buying the biggest possible places with their money and then upgrading/extending etc rather than enjoying what they have and make it “theirs”.
Does anyone else feel this way about home decor?

This is the style I was referring to, how can people say it's just clutter and junk?

That's mega cluttered. There's not a usable surface in the house! Stuff all over the floor doesn't become "decor" just because you've got a massive posh house.

Spicegirl1234 · 16/08/2024 16:20

@Fluufer well considering how many people love and follow her account, I don't think I am the only one to adore this style.

There is junk and clutter everywhere! Things on the floor and stuffed down the side of chairs. She probably gets away with it because it’s a large period house, put that look in a 3 bed semi and it’s the stuff of nightmares, I find that house quite depressing.

Spicegirl1234 · 16/08/2024 16:23

@DeeDeesfabulouswardrobe well to each their own then. I find modern, minimalistic grey and beige houses incredibly depressing too.

You do know it isn’t either or don’t you?

I like it but it’s a very specific kind of style, and would be owned by a specific type of person.

Great, and clearly there's plenty of people who don't like it. Besides, as much as you might think it looks nice, do you really think it's a practical way to live? How much free time do you need to dust all those books, mop around baskets of junk, tip over pictures on the floor? Since when is dumping lampshades on the floor decorating? All that stuff everywhere, but no time to tidy the wires behind the sofa...

My house is eclectically decorated, but I can use my coffee table and walk around without tripping over lampshades...

Spicegirl1234 · 16/08/2024 16:27

@Fluufer I like the general style of her place, I am not saying I like to have random lampshades on the floor. It's obv not perfect but I much prefer a house full of meaningful objects and full of personalities than sterile grey spaces as the many ones I see.

DeeDeesfabulouswardrobe · 16/08/2024 16:31

Where are you looking to see these sterile grey boxes? What home accounts are you looking at? If you are using rightmove it’s not really a fair comparison to a curated home account.

There's really a limit to how many truly "meaningful" objects one can acquire... it's just buying stuff because you like clutter. And that's fine if you like it, but it's not superior.

Is it not just that sort of aesthetic that you like though?
Eg. I have a few elderly relatives whose homes are full of meaningful objects and personality but they live in ex-council houses with swirly carpets, trinkets and ornaments everywhere (including souvenirs from gift shops at every seaside resort they ever visited) including the fridge covered in souvenir magnets, lots of patterns and colours but very old-fashioned- think those long frilly bedsheets that reach the floor and the weird caravan-type storage that goes on the wall around the bed. So their houses really do express the owner and their lives and personality. But I just feel this would be the ‘wrong’ aesthetic to you.

This is nice. I’d far rather sit in this room than some of the grey, empty, boring rooms I see online. It’s light but cosy. My dc’s friends often used to comment on our bookshelf. They did not have any in the house! I once had a woman tell me that my home was ‘like a museum’ (I have a lot of antique furniture and prefer old things). I like cosy.

Spicegirl1234 · 16/08/2024 16:37

@Fluufer you are missing the point. It isn't about how many objects you have in your home but about having a home with a bit of personality and that reflects the style and story of those living in it. I am sure some people grey and minimalistic homes are a true reflection of those living in them, which is great, but I think in some instances people just don't bother and follow a trend.

OP posts:
Spicegirl1234 · 16/08/2024 16:40

@buttnut I think maybe I didn't express my point properly in my OP. It's not really about pretty aesthetics but more about people not making an effort to make their home fully "theirs" as perhaps they want to follow trends or are too keen to resell and make it as neutral as possible.
What you describe isn't my taste but nevertheless, it shows their own personality and history and it's lovely in its own way.

PrettyJunglePlant · 16/08/2024 16:42

Some objects are pretty but many are just large, mismatched and randomly coloured. From your original thread about not liking massive homes lacking character, now we come to this lady who has massive home with tons of objects covering every single nook, cranny, windowsill and table

Which is it? Do minimalist homes lack personality or do they reflect those living in them (aka their personality)? You also mentioned in the OP people prioritising size, and yet the example you have used is a very large expensive house.
"Grey boxes" are well suited to those without hours a day to dedicate to dusting?

Spicegirl1234 · 16/08/2024 16:54

@Fluufer what’s with the dusting obsession? Do people usually dust every single day??
I am not against big home at all, I was just saying that people seem often focused on getting big francy houses but then they don’t do much with them inside.

OP posts:
DeeDeesfabulouswardrobe · 16/08/2024 16:57

Can you post an example of what you mean, a home account with that aesthetic OP?

Spicegirl1234 · 16/08/2024 16:58

@DeeDeesfabulouswardrobe if you scroll up a few comments you'll see an example, I posted a video. I don't necessarily refer to a specific style I like, I was talking mainly about boring homes with grey carpets, grey walls, grey kitchens, a black or grey sofa, a beige rug and so on.

What's wrong with people who prefer minimalism and tidiness? I personally find the cluttered houses with "personality" to be very off putting but I don't have to live in them so I don't really care.
