to report this to the police, even though I am technically implicating myself?

My local park is locked overnight and isn’t opened until 6am. It’s a huge park but in one area part of the fence is missing so I squeeze through and go into the park to walk my dog at 4am (he is an XL bully so I like to go the park when nobody is about)

The last few mornings when I have been walking round by the pond there have been a couple of men sitting on the benches next to the pond “feeding the ducks”. I noticed they have black bin liners next to them too. I’m pretty sure I recognise these men from working in a takeaway restaurant.

I am concerned they are trying to catch ducks. I hope i’m wrong, but I just can’t see why two adult men would sit feeding the ducks at 4am?! Especially as the park is officially closed and they have bin liners next to them.

AIBU to report this to the police, even though I’ll be implicating myself too?

Plot twist. The ducks were the only ones in the this scenario that were doing something illegal.

It would not surprise me - Ducks are sneaky creatures - do not be fooled by their feathery tricks.

Whilst on holiday in Northern Ireland, in a park, DH and myself watched a pair of Ducks rob a sandwich off of an unsuspecting man eating his lunch on a park bench.

As the man got up to buy a paper in the Kiosk opposite, the two Ducks sprung into action - One Duck kept look out of the movements of the man buying his paper - Whilst Duck number two tried to grab hold of the whole sandwich with its beak.

As the man turned around and began to move back towards the bench, the 'Look- Out' Duck frantically screeched, 'Quack!', 'Quack!', 'Quack!', 'Quack!', 'Quack!', 'Quackkk!, Quackkkkk!, Quackkkkkkkkk!.

The second Duck turned around in frustration and yelled back in a broad Northern Irish accent - 'For God Almighties Sake, I'm going as Quack as I can'.

The two bombed and waddled it down the road, holding up one side of the sandwich each in their beak. True Story.

Surely this makes me a responsible XL bully owner? As i’m walking him at 4am when the park is closed, therefore it’s on private property?

By your reckoning the men are also on private property too so they can do what they like just like you surely ?!

Seriestwo · 10/08/2024 21:42

Someone stole a tortoise from Butterfly World in Edinburgh.

they got it back. Uneaten, thankfully

I don't think scrawny pond ducks would be much good for meat? I'd assume duck meat comes from those big fat white ducks

Mallard is a favourite of mine, friends give me a couple of brace every winter. They're not meaty like Gressingham duck, but do taste wonderful.

JMSA · 10/08/2024 22:13

But it's really weird that they're there. Whether you agree with her or not, at least the OP is there for a valid reason.
But grown men in the park at 4am feeding the ducks? It's questionable for sure.

brightonrock123456789 · 10/08/2024 22:16

They are not stealing ducks - they would be too hard to catch as they’d fly off

Don’t be ridiculous 🤷‍♀️

Well it does sound a bit dodgy.
Before reporting anything, I'd be going back to the park without dog to observe them more closely.

What? You'd go into a dark park at 4 am on your own?

Yeah, that advice is nuts!

Edge Hill?!

It's not private property, it's public property whatever time it is!

Zoflorabore · 10/08/2024 22:51

Sorry I quoted the wrong post and hadn’t read that it was another university! I’m just dozy.

SquawkerTexasRanger · 10/08/2024 22:56

Maybe the men are a pair of MNers getting their ducks in a row before they LTB

Cas112 · 10/08/2024 15:35

What if one is not in the pond and out of site?😂

🤣
Making me think of that song
"Five little ducks went swimming one day, over the hill and far away, mother duck said quack quack quack quack! And only four little ducks came back....."
Maybe they're not nicking them and they're just hiding over the hill?! 😁

BeachParty · 10/08/2024 23:04

Imperrysmum · 10/08/2024 15:42

How is stealing ducks an odd conclusion? 🤔
Please tell me the alternative scenario then….

-2 adult men at 4am
-Sitting on a bench in a locked park
-Encouraging ducks over with bread
-Have black bin bags next to them
-Recognise men from working in a takeaway that serves duck

See, my mind automatically went to feeding food scraps to the ducks, seeing as you say they're takeaway owners.
Not stealing them, that's a bit of a jump lol

Nah i'd say the OPs conclusion is more likely. 4am in a park loitering near ducks. Much more chance of something nefarious rather than something pure.

BeachParty · 10/08/2024 23:09

Imperrysmum · 10/08/2024 16:23

That’s terrible 😢 I think I’m going to start up a discreet surveillance operation. There’s an arboretum next to the pond, I will hide there tomorrow morning and see if I can see what they are up to.

That won't make you seem any more suspicious at all, crouching behind a bush or wherever at 4am with your dog 🤣

Appledoughnut · 10/08/2024 23:11

Is it actually stealing if they take one? Who do the ducks belong to legally?

Nobody can say for sure. So many variables.

Edingril · 10/08/2024 23:14

Stealing ducks from whom?

With dodgy men hanging about with bin liners? Not without the OP’s dog!

IncessantNameChanger · 10/08/2024 23:19

Can not be arsed to rtft but how light is it at 4am? The ducks, are active then are they?

We have village geese. They have a very set body clock

Allfur · 10/08/2024 23:26

Do people break into your house so much that you need a restricted breed to protect you? And isnt walking at 4am prrtty dangerous
