to report this to the police, even though I am technically implicating myself?

My local park is locked overnight and isn’t opened until 6am. It’s a huge park but in one area part of the fence is missing so I squeeze through and go into the park to walk my dog at 4am (he is an XL bully so I like to go the park when nobody is about)

The last few mornings when I have been walking round by the pond there have been a couple of men sitting on the benches next to the pond “feeding the ducks”. I noticed they have black bin liners next to them too. I’m pretty sure I recognise these men from working in a takeaway restaurant.

I am concerned they are trying to catch ducks. I hope i’m wrong, but I just can’t see why two adult men would sit feeding the ducks at 4am?! Especially as the park is officially closed and they have bin liners next to them.

AIBU to report this to the police, even though I’ll be implicating myself too?

Suspicious behaviour and potentially stealing ducks?

😆😂
Quack!

ListentotheButterflies · 10/08/2024 16:59

You lost me when you admitted to owning that breed of dog.

timenowplease · 10/08/2024 16:59

@Imperrysmum Definitely report it. It is a not uncommon thing to happen.

Not sure why everyone finds is so amusing.

Sorry to derail thread OP.

Well, we rescued a staffy x, way before all this with XL bullies started. According to DEFRA measurements, our dog is classed as an XL Bully, and so we exempted him. He was already neutered and chipped, and we comply with the rest of the regulations.

What should we have done? Had our dog, who has never shown any form of aggression, euthanised?

So yeah. That's why we own an 'XL Bully'.

Count the ducks tomorrow. Count them the next day. If any are missing report them.

She's going to need to get them in a row, though.

Ducks are a protected species under the Wildlife Act 1981 so it is illegal to catch them (if that is what they are going) and if serving them potentially serious environmental health as well

if they are

You’re not being rational.

You say you feel safe having the breed with you. Which suggests you feel protected. Which means you acknowledge it poses a danger to others. Yet you’re upset when people acknowledge that fact, either with words or by trying to protect their children. You acknowledge the dog to be dangerous to them (although safe to/for you) - why can’t they acknowledge that?

You’re also not thinking rationally when you claim the park is ok because it’s private property after it’s closed - as others have pointed out it’s not your private property! And that still doesn’t mitigate the risks of letting your (dangerous by your own admission) dog free in a place whether other people might be - if you’re there, how can you object if others are?

If this is the kind of thinking you’re applying to the men/ducks/park situation I’d say you’re not thinking straight or reliable and you should leave other people alone.

I’m not sure the chances of catching the odd duck in a park is going to make a material difference to the supply chain / wholesale orders of a takeaway business anyway.

I also question the logic of someone who owns a dog they acknowledge is a danger to others, but who for some reason cares about the well-being of wild ducks. People no. Ducks yes. It’s all very odd thinking OP.

This. Every XL owner says how responsible they are and how their dog is so well behaved and has a heart of gold etc, even the ones who end up being killed by them or the ones who have killed others. It's such a weird mentality to have.

You wouldn't walk down the street with a knife in your hand and say 'well I'm a responsible knife owner and it's actually a bread knife which has never hurt anyone, so why are people being hateful to me without even knowing me and my knife?'

you know XL bullies are a dangerous dog to be around, yet you take offence to people being upset when they see one. You could choose any dog in the world, but choose the one you KNOW people are petrified of, and then wonder why they react negatively to the dog. Yet the men sitting feeding ducks are the suspicious seeming ones it kind of reminds me of emperor's new clothes when he can't understand why people are laughing at him.

thursdaymurderclub · 10/08/2024 17:03

ive not read all the comments but imagine if a post appeared on MN... me and my mate take left over bread from the takeaway we work at to feed the ducks in a park at 4am and there's always this dodgy character walking his XL bully.. should we report it to the police, we think he's letting the dog off the lead to attack the ducks

Just for the record and no doubt repeating PP a few pages back. A locked public park out of hours is still a public park. Just because it’s not open doesn’t mean it’s private property, unless you have legally rented it for your own exclusive use.

So you’re breaking the rules by entering and breaking the law if your XL is off lead.

and I would not be ordering duck from that takeaway…

TonTonMacoute · 10/08/2024 17:06

YABU for thinking the police would do something, they don't seem to give a flying duck about any crime these days.

ListentotheButterflies · 10/08/2024 17:06

This is mad.

OP do you really think the police have no other demands on their time other than waiting in the bushes in a park, at 4am, to see if 2 men are trying to catch ducks to serve at their takeaway?

And, do you think that you as the owner of an XL bully walking in the park illegally (trespassing) are likely to be taken seriously?

LoneHydrangea · 10/08/2024 17:07

OP possibly regrets adding the detail re her dog breed. 😂 Should have just said ‘I walk my dog at 4am’… I’m really wary of staffie/bully type dogs so I wish they’d all get walked at 4am, frankly.

I agree the men sound dodgy as fuck.

Thats a good idea!

WhiteLily1 · 10/08/2024 17:08

Also… why would they bother trying to catch / steal a duck? I mean who in their right mind is going to go to the trouble of getting to a locked park at 4am, lure random ducks with bread attempt to grab one (which would be tricky on an open pond in a public park) and then kill it, put it in a bag for the walk back to the takeaway. Then presumably you have to repeat as you wouldn’t want to bother for only one duck. All far far too much hassle saying a few quid on a frozen duck from farm foods or wherever.
Seems unlikely 🤣

ListentotheButterflies · 10/08/2024 17:08

You aren't 'technically' implicating yourself.

You're very much implicating yourself.

SerafinasGoose · 10/08/2024 17:10

A duck walks into a bar. It says to the bartender: 'got any bread?'
'No', says the bartender. 'We don't do bread here, only beer. Can I get you a beer?'
The duck says: 'Got any bread?'
The bartender says: 'I've just told you mate. We're a pub, not a bakery, we sell drinks!'
Duck: 'Got any bread?'
Bartender (beginning to lose his temper): 'Look, if you say that again I'll nail your beak to the bar!'
So the duck asks: 'Got any nails?'
The bartender, (now losing it completely) says 'No! I haven't got any fucking nails. This is a PUB!'
Duck: 'Got any bread?

I'll get me coat ....

I didn’t say my dog is offlead? I was just making the point that I could technically as it was private property overnight when locked.

I follow all the rules with my dog, don’t worry.

Being closed doesn’t make it private property where you can walk an XL bully off lead. Or any dog for that matter.

Also closed doesn’t make it private.

Diyextension · 10/08/2024 17:12

I know a couple with xl bully’s they are muzzled and have always been nothing but friendly on the other hand ive been attacked twice by german shepherds one of which resulted in a trip to a+e after it took a chunk out my arm and top of my shoulder trying to bite my face. I’d take the xl bully anyday 😉

Demonhunter · 10/08/2024 17:13

XL bully haters out in force today. The post isn't about her dog, JFC any excuse to slam the bullies.

Otherstories2002 · 10/08/2024 17:13

Imperrysmum · 10/08/2024 16:39

A property that is being privately used is private property no? It’s not like it is someone’s house, it is a public park that is closed and I am (or was) using it privately.

Anyway he is on lead & muzzled

That isn’t what private property means 😂

And you realise that if it had been an XL bully either time the risk of death was higher?
