to report this to the police, even though I am technically implicating myself?

My local park is locked overnight and isn’t opened until 6am. It’s a huge park but in one area part of the fence is missing so I squeeze through and go into the park to walk my dog at 4am (he is an XL bully so I like to go the park when nobody is about)

The last few mornings when I have been walking round by the pond there have been a couple of men sitting on the benches next to the pond “feeding the ducks”. I noticed they have black bin liners next to them too. I’m pretty sure I recognise these men from working in a takeaway restaurant.

I am concerned they are trying to catch ducks. I hope i’m wrong, but I just can’t see why two adult men would sit feeding the ducks at 4am?! Especially as the park is officially closed and they have bin liners next to them.

AIBU to report this to the police, even though I’ll be implicating myself too?

By law XL have to be on lead and muzzled when in public places so how does it bark at other dogs if its got a muzzle on ?

I have a bigger muzzle on so he can still open his mouth to pant etc.

Thank you. Im going to do a surveillance operation tomorrow morning and see if I can see what they are up to and then I will have something solid to report to the police.

Gutted this thread won't last til then

there more likely to be dumping food waste than stealing ducks

This was my thought.

Is there a park keepers hut, or park keeper that's there regularly during the day?
If so could you speak to them, ask them if they know how many ducks are there and if any have been going missing lately? Then describe what you saw. They'd probably be the ones to do something or care if it's their job to keep an eye on the ducks and their area.
Even if they weren't stealing them, most parks have signs that says not to feed the ducks as bread is bad for them. So they should be told what you witnessed.
You don't need to say exactly what time you were there. If you have to make an excuse you could say your dog ran through the hole and towards the duckpond, and you followed him to get him under control.

And then she would be in trouble for having an out of control restricted breed in a public place.

Yeah right, good luck with the black op

So what if this is all in your imagination and they end up getting in trouble for sitting in a park after hours, doing the exact same you're doing. What if they aren't here legally and the police ask for papers and they end up getting deported?

A muzzle must be big enough for a dog to full open its mouth, otherwise it can’t pant properly which would be dangerous. Anyone putting a too small muzzle on any dog is risking their health.

Is this a racist post? A strange conclusion to jump to - and from an XL Bully owner….

twohotwaterbottles · 10/08/2024 16:52

But you haven't seen they do anything wrong? Shove some information through Crime Stoppers as intelligence and leave it there

whyhere · 10/08/2024 16:52

Amazing how many people have turned this into yet another anti-dog thread: XL bullies (no, I don't have one) are fabulous breeds when properly trained, and the OP is behaving extremely responsibly with hers.

Re the dubious men, I think duck stealing sounds a very likely scenario.

Hectorscalling · 10/08/2024 16:53

ginasevern · 10/08/2024 16:47

Personally yes, I'd give the police a ring. Two men sitting around in a park at 4am isn't exactly usual behaviour. I don't think you'd need to worry about your situation OP.

ah so someone walking their dog illegally in a closed park IS usual behaviour?

Setting up surveillance to watch 2 men sitting at 4am on a morning IS usual behaviour?

SerafinasGoose · 10/08/2024 16:53

Sallyh87 · 10/08/2024 16:47

They are wild ducks so pretty sure they aren’t commuting a crime. If they are indeed luring ducks into plastic bags in the early hours. I think this is quite unlikely.

I think OP has been reading too much Roald Dahl. It's not actually possible to catch pheasants (or ducks, for that matter) by gluing a sticky paper hat full of gin-soaked raisins over their eyes so they can't see you (or the plastic bag) coming. 😂

Better luck next time, OP!

MissMoneyFairy · 10/08/2024 16:51

Do you think muzzles clamp dog’s mouth’s shut? They can pant, drink, take treats and bark whilst wearing them.

Stop trying to dig at the op if you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Fariha31 · 10/08/2024 16:54

Also, thinking about it; ducks are pretty tough, especially those big ones, what are they? Canada geese.

I would not want to take one on.

Were they big tough looking restaurant workers? I can imagine them now; wrestling with the ducks in black plastic bags (presumably only one duck per bag right?) white shirts and those little fake bow ties flapping in the wind.

All I can say is you'd need an extra thick plastic bag

How is that relevant 🙄

Honourspren · 10/08/2024 16:54

I have an alternative theory.

The two are secret lovers and not out to their families yet. Duck feeding is romantic, and 4am is the only time they have away from prying eyes. The bin liners are so they don't get dirty on the ground and cannot be implicated.

Seems just as likely. I should have chosen writing soap operas as my career.

Isometimeswonder · 10/08/2024 16:54

Imperrysmum · 10/08/2024 15:34

Surely this makes me a responsible XL bully owner? As i’m walking him at 4am when the park is closed, therefore it’s on private property?

Not YOUR private property tho @Imperrysmum .
Feckin XLs. Jeez

EveningSpread · 10/08/2024 16:55

Imperrysmum · 10/08/2024 16:08

He’s all above board.

I walk him at 4am because many people (like the people on this thread) make rude remarks under their breath when we walk past. Parents grab their children and I get dirty looks if heaven forbid he barks at another dog (like dogs do)

It’s just not nice.

You’re not being rational.

You say you feel safe having the breed with you. Which suggests you feel protected. Which means you acknowledge it poses a danger to others. Yet you’re upset when people acknowledge that fact, either with words or by trying to protect their children. You acknowledge the dog to be dangerous to them (although safe to/for you) - why can’t they acknowledge that?

You’re also not thinking rationally when you claim the park is ok because it’s private property after it’s closed - as others have pointed out it’s not your private property! And that still doesn’t mitigate the risks of letting your (dangerous by your own admission) dog free in a place whether other people might be - if you’re there, how can you object if others are?

If this is the kind of thinking you’re applying to the men/ducks/park situation I’d say you’re not thinking straight or reliable and you should leave other people alone.

I’m not sure the chances of catching the odd duck in a park is going to make a material difference to the supply chain / wholesale orders of a takeaway business anyway.

I also question the logic of someone who owns a dog they acknowledge is a danger to others, but who for some reason cares about the well-being of wild ducks. People no. Ducks yes. It’s all very odd thinking OP.

Fariha31 · 10/08/2024 16:55

Good job you had your dog there to protect you.

Count the ducks tomorrow. Count them the next day. If any are missing report them.

😆

ListentotheButterflies · 10/08/2024 16:57

I assume you think the ducks will appear again as Duck a L'orange?
Or duck with hoisin sauce?

I would have thought stealing ducks is the last thing they are doing. It seems dodgy for sure though- dumping waste, dealing drugs? Who knows.
What I’m more fascinated about it you sneaking in a locked park at 4am and wandering about.
How on Earth do you manage to get up that early daily? I know you have an XL bully with you but still, I would be terrified walking alone at that time. I’m quite in awe of that and that you have the nerve.
Having an XL bully is also baffling. I mean why? Would frighten the hell out of me living with one
