Just been pulled over by the police

Fuming right now.

Been on a night out with work, partner picked me up, he is a named driver on my car.

Had issues with insurence when I renewed. Noticed policy was inactive after paying yearly fees. Spoke to insurence who apologised, stated the policy will be activated and gave £100 as a gesture of good will, this was in may

Police just pulled us over. Breathalysed DH driving the car and stayed we had no insurence. Checked policy and it's come up again as inactive. Have been told we have 7 days to prove insurence or DH will get 6 points in his license, this will effect his job.

I'm mortified. Obviously I'll contact insurence on Monday, but what if they say we are not covered. I've attached a screenshot of email provided by insurence but I'm really panicking now. What do I do??

Ah I can't bear it insurance insurance

Doing my head in.

@Honestlynotsure

then take your head, give it a good wobble & go & do something else. It's not compulsory to read a thread!

Ponkpinkpink15 · 10/08/2024 10:36

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 10/08/2024 10:17

But people were getting a policy and certificate and then cancelling the policy.

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints

yes, I've since read that that was an issue.

I hadn't allowed for fuckwits!!

@SlashBeef I could actually kiss you. It turns out I also have to portals under the same email. Logged onto the current one and it states insurence is active.

Still need to call them though as when I click onto my documents it states certificate is not yet available.

I think another very large complaint is due.

So pleased 😀 I completely relate to that heart sinking moment of seeing "inactive" when you know you've paid your insurance. Horrendous.

Do you feel better now?

@Sitdownrosa

I think this was at least a kind & informative post, unlike the other two that were just shitty.

TwistedSisters · 10/08/2024 10:51

ListentotheButterflies · 10/08/2024 08:59

That doesn't make sense.

If they were waiting in a layby and a car passed, why would they hone in on it and stop it for no reason?

They won't have the computer on checking insurance of every passing car.

They do. Not manually, but most police cars have ANPR systems that scan the number plate of every passing vehicle and it would have pinged up as uninsured.

Lilacapples · 10/08/2024 10:52

ListentotheButterflies · 10/08/2024 08:51

On a slightly different note, are the police allowed to do random stop and questioning?

I thought there had to be a reason (unless it's changed) like erratic driving, bulb not working in a headlight or indicator etc.

I wonder why they breathalised him for no reason?

Yes. My husband was stopped 2 years ago at 4am. He was just going to the hospital as his dad was dying. He ended up getting there too late. They never gave a valid reason l. I suspect his car, the hoodie and baseball cap were the reason though. Hes a 50+ year old man going out in the middle of winter and has a bald head that gets cold!

Yes thank you, that was killing me softly 🫣

mycatsanutter · 10/08/2024 10:57

@Lilacapples ah that's awful 😢

VanGoghsDog · 10/08/2024 11:03

I called them up and the lady apologised and said it was a computer error there side and that was a cancellation fee

Sorry, what exactly were they claiming was a cancellation fee? Surely not the £800?

Btw, it's many many years since I've had certificates emailed to me. They go on the portal, I download to a file in my One Drive.

ThePoshUns · 10/08/2024 11:13

Why are you fuming at the police they are literally doing their job?
Not their fault you have a shit insurance policy.

SofiaSoFar · 10/08/2024 11:16

Bjorkdidit · 10/08/2024 05:40

That only works if the car being driven is correctly insured too, otherwise it could be used to insure a cheap 'decoy' car but drive a more expensive car registered in another person's name.

OP this sounds awful and a similar thing happened to an acquaintance of mine. Had all the emails, was paying by DD and honestly thought she was correctly insured but something had gone wrong with the admin so it wasn't registered on the database. However I don't know the outcome of whether or not it was sorted.

That only works if the car being driven is correctly insured too, otherwise it could be used to insure a cheap 'decoy' car but drive a more expensive car registered in another person's name.

That's not a true. It depends on the terms of your DOC cover as to whether the other vehicle needs to be insured for your DOC cover to be valid.

Many, but not all, require the vehicle to have its own insurance. They would need to check the exact wording of their specific policy certificate and schedule to know.

Unfortunately there's always plenty of well meaning but inaccurate advice posted on MN motoring-related threads.

It isn't incorrect advice.
To have a policy that allowed you to drive any car without it being insured would be a specific add on, OP would know if her DH had this. This isn't a free perk of routine car insurance.

In fact most fully comp insurances no longer have DOC as standard.

SofiaSoFar · 10/08/2024 11:29

ListentotheButterflies · 10/08/2024 08:58

But surely they only knew that once they'd stopped the car?

Were they waiting outside wherever you were picked up?

I'm sorry to push on this but I thought they weren't allowed to do random stop and questioning .

ANPR camera on the police car will have picked up that there is no insurance for that registration. They run constantly and flag up document offences.

They absolutely don't need any reason to stop any vehicle, though. The insurance doesn't matter in that respect, when you choose to use a vehicle on public roads you are accepting that you may be pulled at any time if the police choose to do so.

Once pulled, they can breathalyse you for a multitude of reasons - document offences would be one. Believing they can smell alcohol would be another. Or asking if you've had a drink and you say 'I had a small glass of wine 8hrs ago'. And ultimately, 'manner of driving' is a cover-all as they can say you seemed hesitant, weaving, etc.

That only works if the car being driven is correctly insured too is absolutely incorrect advice because, as I said, it's entirely dependent upon the specific policy.

And here you are posting yet more incorrect advice. It's is not only a specific add-on. Some DOC covers do automatically cover the policy holder regardless of whether the other vehicle has a specific policy.

Aviva, for example, do give DOC cover with some policies (policy holder dependent) that don't require the other vehicle to have its own policy.

The keeper of the vehicle being driven would still be committing an offence under CIE legislation, though. But that's a completely difference offence not related to the driver with the DOC cover.

Of course they are if a car shows up as uninsured. Breathalyser is standard, particularly if they can smell booze.

I’ve just checked, I renewed with this company this year. Everything seems fine, certificate is there etc.

OP, in the email you have posted what refund are they refering to?

Also your post is a little confusing. Am I following...

You were set up with this policy on a monthly DD. However, it failed due to their error and you paid in full. This then ended up not being the policy cost, but the cancellation fee.

Are you 100% sure you paid in full? Because a monthly policy costs more in total due to it also being a loan. Did this person you spoke to when paying in full correct the policy to being paid annually? This is something you would have seen on your online account when checking back in May.

Also, you should have been sent you certificate by email at least. Even if set up on paperless online management. Yes, all your other documents would not be emailed, but the certificate should have been. Print it off and take it to the police. That is your proof.

I also agree with binning this incompetent company off when this issue is sorted.

If it is an online policy, you aren’t necessarily sent the certificate by mail or email, you can access it (and all other relevant documents) online.

I haven’t been sent a copy of my certificate the last two times I have renewed, however I do log into my documents and print the certificate from there, just so I have it, in case something like this happens.

whereisthelifethatirecognize · 10/08/2024 12:05

Good luck. Sure it will be sorted quickly.

@Outandabout43

That's good.

Were you able to speak to the insurers this morning for confirmation of your current policy?

Outandabout43 · 10/08/2024 12:50

Sooooo, apparently the certificate and confirmation off the insurence isn't good enough. As its not on the MID then it's not insured. I'm livid.

Called the company and they just keep saying but your documents are in place.

This could result in 6 points for DH
