Just been pulled over by the police

Fuming right now.

Been on a night out with work, partner picked me up, he is a named driver on my car.

Had issues with insurence when I renewed. Noticed policy was inactive after paying yearly fees. Spoke to insurence who apologised, stated the policy will be activated and gave £100 as a gesture of good will, this was in may

Police just pulled us over. Breathalysed DH driving the car and stayed we had no insurence. Checked policy and it's come up again as inactive. Have been told we have 7 days to prove insurence or DH will get 6 points in his license, this will effect his job.

I'm mortified. Obviously I'll contact insurence on Monday, but what if they say we are not covered. I've attached a screenshot of email provided by insurence but I'm really panicking now. What do I do??

I showed the email to the police and they where so rude and upsetting its now made me really worried. I'd been out with work friends and DH picked me up with young DD in the car asleep, it was like i was being judged for having a drink.

I know it states I'm covered since March 2024 but what if they go back on what they have said. I've never been in trouble with the police in my life.

I tried to call insurence but it states they are only open for complaints Monday to Friday

I showed the email to the police and they where so rude and upsetting its now made me really worried.

There's a reason British trust in the police is so low at the moment. They were absolute jerks to me when they stopped me at 17 for the grand crime of being out at 2am. I wish I'd had the confidence to complain because it was so unnecessary.

I get they deal with assholes breaking the law all the time but that is literally their job and they need the aptitude for it.

I put my experience down to a one off but the more I speak to law abiding friends and see online, the number of police prosecuted for serious offences or suspended for investigations, the more convinced I am that there is a real core of rot and needs serious reform.

I think you'll be fine. Its an administrative error on their part. But once you've dealt with it I strongly encourage you to report the behaviour or you'll spend years regretting it. So many of us let that stuff slide because we're just grateful to get it over with.

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints I thought it wasn't on the database that was the ops issue ?

Yes that is the issue. People are saying get an email or certificate to confirm when the best thing anyone can do is check for themselves.

Why are people correcting the OP's spelling?

Because it makes them feel an inflated sense of self worth, when really they are just being arseholes. Sick of seeing this on here.

theDudesmummy · 10/08/2024 09:43

I suppose because I always pay the whole year in advance I feel always reassured when I look at the disc on the windscreen with the expiration date on it!

TwizzleDee · 10/08/2024 09:51

Does DH have insurance for his own car that would give him 3rd party insurance to drive any car?

Sorry if you've already covered this but I don't have time to read all the posts!

Allthehorsesintheworld · 10/08/2024 09:52

Print everything you’ve got and take it to nearest police station along with driving licence, MOT etc…
I had similar when I returned to the UK. Was driving UK registered car but had EU country insurance, perfectly legal for the whole of Europe. But picked up on camera and got a letter saying no insurance, you’ll be fined get x points etc., . I phoned and explained , was told UK registered car had to have UK insurance. I said ok I’ll phone a UK company now and pay for insurance so I’m doubly insured. Was told that was acceptable. Never heard anything else.
Just keep throwing all the proof you have at them.

Vikina · 10/08/2024 09:53

I know you are relieved OP but the database shows you as having no insurance so you need to get that sorted asap. The certificate is important but most important to get the database sorted. I'm glad you have got to the bottom of it and that your insurance is valid.

Legislation has been approved recently in Ireland to do away with paper tax discs in line with many other European countries. I can see insurance and NCT discs following suit.

Have you got proof of the full payment on a bank statement? Along with the emails and proof of payment, I can't see how your insurance company can argue.

OP I had the same situation with the same insurers. For some reason I had two portals under the same email address so I could log in to two different policies if you see what I mean. It all depended on which policy number I used to log in, the previous or current year. Check the policy number for this current year and make sure you're logging in with that number.
I nearly had a heart attack when it said my policy was inactive after a collision because I'd paid the year in full and not received any cancellation notification. Checked the policy number on the initial certificate and I was logged into the wrong one.

Not the same thing, but when I've been with an insurer for a few years, I log into the portal and the first policy it shows me is the oldest one which says EXPIRED on it and I almost have a heart attack EVERY TIME. I have to scroll down for the current active policy!

theDudesmummy · 10/08/2024 08:03

This sort of thing is why I think the system of having an insurance disc on your car windscreen (which we still have in Ireland) is better. No room for this kind of error.

@theDudesmummy

it was MUCH better, all this 'progress' isn't!!

Honestlynotsure · 10/08/2024 10:16

Ah I can't bear it insurance insurance

Doing my head in.

No, we where very nearly home, over half an hour away from where I had been out. Stated it had flagged on the system I had no insurence.

It sound like your insurance company is a fault - I was going to suggest it was police database not being updated but if it was May assume it should have been.

We moved house and 2 weeks later our garage was broken into and DH motorbike taken and used in min crime spree - we had police banging on our door at 4 am - very irate at us as he gone to previous address and tried to say that was our fault - he was also trying to get us to step out of property but door had that style yale lock which slam shut behind you - and I had a baby and toddler upstairs - so was firmly and politely explain that wasn't happening and we'd informed insurance people move data and confirmed change of address afterwards.

He did get nicer when it became clear garage was forced and we weren't involved - then said insurance companies could be delayed in updating info in the database - something I've subsequently seen refence on TV police shows.

TonTonMacoute · 10/08/2024 10:18

You will need to show them all the correspondence you have had with the insurance company and any bank statements.

oneskip · 10/08/2024 10:19

^*it's not exactly the most important issue here is it? It is incredibly rude,to pick people up on their spelling, people have various issues & should not be put off posting because their spelling isn't always correct.

YOU do not own or run MN, so take your petty whinging & superiority complex over to pedants corner.*^

What is with & instead of and???

  • don't bother to tell me to F off, I've gone for breakfast
WalkInAStraightLine · 10/08/2024 10:19

Everyone posting now - read the OP's posts first. You might find your advice is now redundant!

Glad that’s sorted OP, just so you know it’s spelt insurance rather than insurence :D

Do you feel better now?

TheSquareMile · 10/08/2024 10:26

@Outandabout43

First Central Insurance are open for calls and webchat today, OP.

In your situation, I would contact them this morning and confirm that you have a valid policy at the moment.

I don't watch Motorway Cops :)

Maybe you should

mycatsanutter · 10/08/2024 10:30

@Outandabout43 how have you got on with ringing them ?

Rosscameasdoody · 10/08/2024 10:31

Can all those who feel the twattish need to correct OP’s spelling and grammar, just stop and ask yourselves a question. Would you correct someone in the same rude way irl ? You don’t know the first thing about OP and there’s always a possibility that you’re being unknowingly ableist. It’s rude, it’s uncalled for, and it has nothing whatever to do with what she posted.

Rosscameasdoody · 10/08/2024 10:32

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 10/08/2024 10:17

But people were getting a policy and certificate and then cancelling the policy.

Wouldn’t make any difference, the police would still be aware that the driver was uninsured.
