to not want to hear this conversation whilst sitting out on my patio? (animal cruely triggering)

I live in a terraced house so obviously can hear everything that's being said in neighbouring gardens and a bit beyond.

My neighbours have gone on holiday and obviously sublet the house either to friends or an AirBnB type thing. The people subletting (from the sound of it) are two young couples, very posh - talking about the difficulties of getting a job in the City. Also shouting at Alexa (in the kitchen) from the garden.

They are eating dinner outside. There is one very loud young hooray, everything he's saying is with a mouth full of food. He's just been talking about websites he's been on where dogs are boiled alive for food and he's seen a whole deep-fried chihauaua, and says he'd love to try it, because obviously it's no different to eating pork. And it's racist to say otherwise.

AIBU to say he's a cunt of the highest order and I don't know why the 3 people eating with him aren't telling him to shut the fuck up. And how can he even have a partner, or friends?

And thanks for getting those images into my head you stupid, fucking, random stranger.

Interesting point about pets though. People eat pigeon, chicken and duck, but people keep them as pets too.

Very few of these animals are kept as pets, generally for eggs, meat or pigeon racing. Also they don't live in the house with you as part of your family.

dontstopmenowimhavingagoodtime · 10/08/2024 04:44

Unpleasant but unlikely to ever be repeated.

I'd not mention it to the neighbours.

Maddy70 · 10/08/2024 04:53

Hes right though isn't he?

Eating a dog is no different to eating a chicken.
Its whats acceptable in other countries

I think OP is referring to the boiling alive comment.

Most people would never have any contact with a pig so wouldn't know that they can be loyal/loving.
If you had one as a domesticated pet living in your home that you loved and cared for you wouldn't eat it and I think the large majority would give up eating pork
You wouldn't eat a human because it goes against instinct and is a huge societal taboo.
To a lesser degree in most western countries eating dogs/cats is also a taboo.
It's down to the relationship we have with pets again not some story we tell each other .
The reason we don't eat pigeons or seagulls is that they are seen as vermin like rats. Not many people would eat rat.
I am not some rabid meat eater and have no issue with anyone's dietary choices.
If I cooked dinner for a group of carnivores and decided to serve cat/dog stew most would refuse to eat over riding the polite norms of society because pets are seen as part of the family and other dogs/cats are seen as an extension of that.

Sorry for derailing your thread op.

I just wanted to put my point across that I believe that there a reasons we don't eat cats and dogs and it's not to make myself feel better when I eat a meat dish.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 10/08/2024 06:40

We kept chickens. A few were named pets and (literally) off the table for eating.
The rest were fair game.

I grew up seeing home slaughter so the whole vegan gotcha on that front doesn't work on me. It's normally a quick and easy enough process, although pigs not so much admittedly.

It's definitely completely removed from the deliberate beating, torture and cooking alive that goes on at the Chinese dog eating festival.

Obviouspretzel · 10/08/2024 06:54

Literally nothing happened here. A man had a conversation in a garden that you didn't like. And that's it? Ridiculous.

ThatOneUncomfortableEyelash · 10/08/2024 07:04

I prefer the neighbours chatting over their dinner in the garden to the neighbour playing the radio as loud as they can stand in the garden. The first is normal enjoyment of the property, the second is selfish, antisocial noise pollution.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 10/08/2024 07:10

Some countries eat cat, some eat dog, some eat horse. We don't here in the UK, but you just have to look at the Wet markets in China to see how other countries are different.

I'd be more grossed out by him speaking with his mouth full than him showing off to friends because you know for sure that's all he's doing.

I think you’ve just re-told the story that meat eaters tell themselves, oops.

Interesting point about pets though. People eat pigeon, chicken and duck, but people keep them as pets too.

But would society be ok eating a parakeet, seagull or sparrow? Or a little robin red breast plucked and stuffed inside the turkey at Christmas?

(If you think I’m fun at parties you should see me at Christmas and Easter)

Edited

But we see pets as family.

Do you love all humans, despite them not all being blood relations (or you love them if they aren't blood related)?

I don't. Life isn't black and white. Neither is the meat eating debate! Humans are able to have thought processes, which allows us to be comfortable eating some animals, but not all.

OhmygodDont · 10/08/2024 07:21

Apart from boiling alive. I see no issue. I’ve never understood the magical line of what meat we do eat and tbh I love to try all sorts of meat.

The line only exists because people see them as cute pets. But we have pet bunnies and eat rabbits. Keep chickens yet eat them. So the logic doesn’t always fit.

In fact thinking about it I’d rather eat a well looked after boarder collie than a pigeon tbh

I think OP is referring to the boiling alive comment.

How do you think lobsters are cooked?

dontstopmenowimhavingagoodtime · 10/08/2024 10:43

@Maddy70 they're boiled alive.

But you know that? So why are you asking me?

I'm merely pointing out to you saying it's meat like any other, that the objection of the OP was about the boiling dogs alive comment.

Are you trying to be clever, because you're not succeeding.

macaroniandcheeze · 10/08/2024 10:44

@Izzabellasasperella “There is a difference between pets and livestock” … that is the story meat eaters tell themselves!

The only difference is the way we choose to treat them.

Soubriquet · 10/08/2024 10:55

Thing is, I agree with him about eating dogs. If you can eat a pig, you can eat a dog.

What I disagree with, is the barbaric ways it happens. There’s no need for them to be tortured and cooked alive.

Completely agree.
Maybe OP should slide a passive aggressive note under their door telling them to only to discuss matters pre-approved by her? Problem solved.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/08/2024 13:11

@LouH5

I really don’t get why the part about the spliff is bothering you so much!

I would guess it's the fact that the girlfriend thought it was 'insane' that a man of 62 should be doing this . Ageist comment.

Almostwelsh · 10/08/2024 13:36

I don't have a problem with eating dogs. I don't think any creature should be boiled alive. And no, I don't eat lobsters, I'm allergic to shellfish, so the issue has never arisen.

Not at all. Why do you think that? Strange comment! Just because someone isnt as sensitive to these kind of discussions doesn't mean the neighbours should temper their conversation

Rummly · 10/08/2024 16:57

This AIBU is nuts.

Only on MN…

Watermel · 10/08/2024 17:00

Vegan here, Unless you're vegan too, you're being a hypocrite. I am appalled when I hear people talk about eating chickens/pigs/cows/fish/sheep. And believe me, they do not die nice easy deaths.

WomanFromTheNorth · 09/08/2024 23:29

It's disgusting but all kinds of disgusting things are done to animals that people eat and nobody bats an eyelid. If you eat meat, you're no better.

This

You're incomprehensible.

Alltheyearround · 10/08/2024 17:20

Eating a dog is no different to eating any other mammal , they are all just as sentient. Cows bond strongly with each other, are highly intelligent and can be playful like dogs. I work next to an abattoir and see animals going inside every day and hear the noise coming from inside and I can tell you that they are just as distressed and in pain when they are slaughtered as any other animal would be😞

I used to work near an abattoir and cows would regularly escape and run up the road. Sadly they were all caught and sent to their doom. They were distressed by the sounds and smells. The know it doesn't mean anything good is happening. Quite a high turn over of staff and a number who became veggie after leaving there. When the wind was in the wring direction the smell was horrific.

Would recommend 'The Secret Life of Cows', really fascinating.

Not advocating eating dogs either or pigs, chickens and sheep.

They all have a pretty nasty time of it.

Anyway, back to the actual thread.
