To not eat food prepped in the sick bowl

Homeiswherethedogis · 09/08/2024 19:35

Just walked in on DH mixing the ingredients for our dinner in a bowl... Which has also been used as the kids sick bowl a couple times! Yes it's been cleaned since housing the sick but I still don't really want to eat tonight's meal.

I'm being told that's silly and to get over it.

AIBU?

Yes - eat the meal DH has made
No - that's gross don't eat

I wouldn’t eat it!

Saggytoot · 09/08/2024 19:37

Dont eat it.

LittleGreenDragons · 09/08/2024 19:38

I wouldn't eat it, but then our special sick bowl is located in the bathroom and not the kitchen. Why is yours still in the cupboard?

Notenoughdollarbucks · 09/08/2024 19:38

Well, we don’t keep a special bowl for sick?!!! Surely it’s either the washing up bowl, or a big mixing bowl.
which then gets bleached and put through the dishwasher on a very hot wash.
so yes I have definitely done what your DH is doing and see no issue with it

Worriedmummy2400 · 09/08/2024 19:38

I would if it’s been washed a few times. Especially if you have a dishwasher.

Onehotday · 09/08/2024 19:38

Not a chance. Takeaway it is!

HappyFitnessQueen · 09/08/2024 19:38

There's a viral video about this somewhere...every family has the sick bowl...which is also the popcorn bowl...and a salad bowl :D

This is very normal and happens in most households! It's ok to feel grossed out by it but I would assume the bowl has been thoroughly cleaned, numerous times, since the vomit incidents?!

Rainpigeon · 09/08/2024 19:38

Do you have a dish washer? Just eat it and don't think about it. You are being irrational.

Thesecretingredientiscrime · 09/08/2024 19:38

Unless it has sick currently encrusted on it, why not?

I can guarantee you've eaten from worse bowls if you eat out.

Fizzypop88 · 09/08/2024 19:38

Fizzypop88 · 09/08/2024 19:36

I wouldn’t eat it!

Just to add I’m a microbiologist… and I’m not that anal. But I think that would be a bad idea to eat from a bowl that’s potentially been full of norovirus or whatever.

DeathByResponsibilities · 09/08/2024 19:40

I think you are being unreasonable. There is no hygiene reason why the meal should be affected by the vessel's previous use if it has been cleaned.

But, once you've got an aversion in your head it can be hard to dismiss it, so ultimately rationality may not be the deciding factor.

Disgust is a strong emotion, and emotions aren't always logical.

Absolutely your problem though, so you should be diplomatic if you decline the meal and not blame anyone.

Comedycook · 09/08/2024 19:40

How's it been cleaned?

A quick swill under the tap? Eww..no thanks.

In the dishwasher on a hot wash? Yeah fine

Your view is quite unusual for people in your field ime.

ThePassageOfTime · 09/08/2024 19:47

@Fizzypop88

No way are you a microbiologist 😂

You'd understand how germs die and/or are killed by cleaning and/or stomach acid!

OP OBVIOUSLY it's fine as long as it was throughly washed up. Jeepers. Mumsnet

Homeiswherethedogis · 09/08/2024 19:48

It's a medium sized plastic mixing bowl. Still in kitchen cupboard as a quick grab vs run upstairs (kids are very young).

It was cleaned in the dishwasher. But I think the problem is it's now ingrained in my head and I can't get passed it.

To make matters worse the ingredient include a tomato based sauce

OP

Never google the cleanliness of keyboards or phones then.

@Fizzypop88 you either

You lives will be ruined 😂

🤣🤣 you said what I was thinking.

JackJarvisEsq · 09/08/2024 19:51

To be fair surely a chopping board that had raw chicken on it would have to be thrown out each time it was used?

Oh don't!

After reading some of these comments I'm trying to get my head back round to eating it. Less chance now 😂

Not as much of an aversion as vomit though is it lol, I'm not worried getting ill.

😁

OneCoolPearlOP · 09/08/2024 19:56

Well you're clearly rich enough to turn your nose up at food. So buy a different bowl and keep this somewhere else where it's purpose is clear!
YABVVU to keep it In the kitchen cupboards along with everything else used for food preparation if you didn't want it used anyway. Fair enough to want a bowl downstairs but keep it on a different cupboard or something.
