To not eat food prepped in the sick bowl

Just walked in on DH mixing the ingredients for our dinner in a bowl... Which has also been used as the kids sick bowl a couple times! Yes it's been cleaned since housing the sick but I still don't really want to eat tonight's meal.

I'm being told that's silly and to get over it.

AIBU?

Yes - eat the meal DH has made
No - that's gross don't eat

This is the sort of thing that puts me off eating in other peoples houses and eating homemade gifts.

😂😂

If it's been properly washed then the issues are all in your head.

SaltAndVinegar2 · 09/08/2024 20:23

Not sure why people are saying it's only clean if it's been through a dishwasher. As someone who doesn't own a dishwasher my washing up gets perfectly clean. And never comes out with dried encrusted bits of food still stick on like out of dishwashers

usernother · 09/08/2024 20:23

Unless there are some rogue chunks stuck to it, YABU.

Homeiswherethedogis · 09/08/2024 20:24

@ramsayboltonshounds wow really, that's incredible

I have pretty severe emetophobia and would have no issue with this. I bleach our sick bowl afterwards, and then once that's been rinsed off it goes in the dishwasher on a hot wash.

I don't see how it's worse than a kitchen chopping board (for example) that's had raw chicken on it and been washed afterwards.

meganorks · 09/08/2024 20:25

YABU. Presumably your child had not just been sick in it.

Choochoo21 · 09/08/2024 20:26

No way!! 🤢🤢

I have heard so many people who use the sick bowl to eat out of, it’s absolutely vile!!

My hygiene standards are probably pretty low compared to most MNers but even I cross a line at this.

Just use a bin of mop bucket instead!!

If it’s a dick bowl though, it shouldn’t be kept in the kitchen (unless it’s under the sink) else people are going to use it to cook in.

LindorDoubleChoc · 09/08/2024 20:28

Of course yanbu. How can it be in the kitchen in among the cooking bowls?

FictionalCharacter · 09/08/2024 20:28

Homeiswherethedogis · 09/08/2024 19:48

It's a medium sized plastic mixing bowl. Still in kitchen cupboard as a quick grab vs run upstairs (kids are very young).

It was cleaned in the dishwasher. But I think the problem is it's now ingrained in my head and I can't get passed it.

To make matters worse the ingredient include a tomato based sauce

OK if it’s been in the dishwasher I’d be ok with it. If my dh did this and had only hand washed the bowl I wouldn’t, because he doesn’t wash stuff up very thoroughly.

honeyfox · 09/08/2024 20:28

Oh no. We don't currently have one but in my childhood home it was kept in the bath and only used for illness or steeping or bleaching dirty clothes or clothes and nothing else. I could never have eaten anything prepared in it!

RedRobyn2021 · 09/08/2024 20:29

If it's made from plastic I wouldn't eat it

If it's made from glass or ceramic and cleaned in a dishwasher then I would

Thevelvelletes · 09/08/2024 20:29

Couldn't get past the thought of what it's past uses have been for.
Clarification..I cowk easily at the thought of certain things..

I'd like to clarify that he's had other ailments! He's not some sort of health guru, it's just he's never parted with the contents of his stomach!

LindorDoubleChoc · 09/08/2024 20:31

OMFG the previous replies on this thread are DISGUSTING! Stomach churning. Next we'll be saying it's fine to eat out a potty.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 09/08/2024 20:33

It's a definite no from me. I just couldn't get past it. We also have a dedicated sick bowl but it's not kept in the kitchen 😂

This is what I don’t understand!

People are saying it’s fine because it’s been washed but you wouldn’t eat out of it if someone had diarrhoea in it!

Just use a different bowl/bucket for cooking and D&V bugs.

soundsys · 09/08/2024 20:34

If it's been through the dishwasher I wouldn't think twice

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/08/2024 20:38

Just to add I’m a microbiologist… and I’m not that anal. But I think that would be a bad idea to eat from a bowl that’s potentially been full of norovirus or whatever.“

Really? Presumably you Milton or similar any such bowls? Are you saying that sterilising fluids don’t sterilise?

We’re 65 and 60 now. Fairly sure we’ve gone on to use the kids’/grandkids’ sick bowls for other things for 30 plus years. We’re all still alive.

What evidence are you basing your post on? As a scientist, there must be some?

SwingTheMonkey · 09/08/2024 20:38

It’s the sort of thing my Dh would do without batting an eyelid. I’d know that it’s technically ok if it’s been thoroughly disinfected but I still wouldn’t do it myself. Which is why we don’t keep our sick bowl in the kitchen amongst the cooking bowls…

Left · 09/08/2024 20:40

Absolutely not.

But we have a sick bucket that’s cleaned out with disinfectant which would give the meal an unusual flavour 🥴

YourFluentCrab · 09/08/2024 20:41

Id eat it. I also have emetophobia so the used bowl is washed, disinfected, bleached then rewashed in hot water....and used for anything.

InsensibleMe · 09/08/2024 20:50

It’s the man’s fault. Leave him.

BlueBobble · 09/08/2024 20:54

Our large multi-purpose bowls are always cleaned with hot water and a bit of bleach after any sick-bowl deployments... we're all fine!!

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 09/08/2024 21:00

This is why I bought the cheapest plastic bins from Ikea for every room!
