Impressed with the speed of action against rioters etc

Wow watching the BBC news and the number of people jailed, etc following being found guilty of either criminal damage assaults, incitement are growing.

The Prime minister said that there would be swift action. He's right. One after the other straight in court and lots given prison sentences.

At least he does what he says on crime!

Also 2 of the 'anti or counter protesters ' jailed for assaults on protesters, brilliant, all people should be charged.

Hopefully the message will put some violent, thugs off? Maybe it will take time to filter through that illegal behaviour will be dealt with, including prison where necessary.

Protest yes. Criminal damage and assault or encouraging violence no.

It's very impressive but important to clamp down on such social disruption

Araminta1003 · 09/08/2024 18:53

The more complicated element is inciting hatred online and the interaction with free speech. I think the laws should be strict and social media should have to carry pop up warnings like the back of fags. Along the lines of blurbs and examples of hate speech and handcuffs. This also needs clamping down if we want to have a functioning democracy long term. Starmer’s a lawyer - I would like him to clamp down there.

I agree it's very important. When I saw the prime minister said he would be tough on this, I sighed knowing that things can take months. It appears the charges and appearances at court were rushed through. I imagine due to wanting to send the message to others that they are serious in stopping this rioting, assaults on police officers and criminal damage etc.

I'm pleased to see it happening. There is no place for thugs in society of any colour or persuasion. A woman also purported to have sent the initial tweet also arrested. Good. Inciting rioting, assault etc should be punished quickly.

I agree.

When governments have said 'tough on crime ' before it was just soundbites. This government so far appear to mean business.

It's nothing new. People were sent to jail just as quickly following the 2011 riots.

Seashor · 09/08/2024 19:26

I’m impressed too, credit where it’s due.

Good point I'd forgotten those. I'm still impressed though at the speed of justice.
2011 was also August but due to a black man Mark Duggan being shot by police which led to riots starting in London.

I believe Starmer was the Director of Public Prosecutions at the time of the 2011 riots? So may be his influence again. Perhaps someone else can confirm or deny.

In any event, yes, it's very welcome. And presumably a useful deterrent against more rioting over the coming weeks or months.

LlynTegid · 09/08/2024 20:07

I agree, and wish justice for many other offences could be as quick. Shop thieves, drink drivers, those who travel on trains without paying, for example.

I'm in NI, so it happens every couple of years or so here.Blush

They could demonetized social media posts linked to ongoing disorder. This would prevent people directly benefitting from posting sensational things.

I'd also look at limiting the additional ad revenue generated online by companies during times of disorder. I'd find some average for each website to cap it at so that there aren't companies directly benefitting from disorder.

20 months custodial for setting fire to a bin while nonces get suspended sentences. Good going.

Yes and this was under Starmer as DPP. Not his first rodeo.

Hopefully the same can be applied to machete wielding thugs.
Time for kids to stop murdering other kids.

Well unless you want riots on the streets more often then criminal damage, assault etc needs punishment.

As far as sex offenders go I would agree longer sentences needed.

I agree, it has been impressive. I'm sure that the swift sentencing will deter some from rioting again this weekend.

I checked average sentences for sex offenders and its

'The average custodial sentence for sexual offences in the UK is between 5 and 10 years, some would argue whether this is long enough for those found guilty of such horrendous crime'.9 Jan 2023

I'd lock up longer personally.

I love it every time I see a news article with another rioter sentenced. Props to the govt for putting their money where their mouth is.

Alconleigh · 09/08/2024 20:43

Yes Starmer did this as DPP after the 2011 riots as he said that a fast sentence is a much more effective deterrent than a heavy sentence at some time in the future.

Maybe they should have just let anarchy descend then?
