To think this is a bit crazy re doctors and lost tablets

I accidentally left my antidepressants at a hotel. I rang the hotel but they have destroyed them as they were not in a box with my name on.
Got in touch with my doctors and the reception said it should not be an issue as it happens a lot.

just got a text from my doctor wanting the name and address of the hotel so they can verify- ok no problem
They also want me to file a police report!!!!

i rang the doctors and said no crime has been committed I simply left my tablets at the hotel by accident but they said they need an police report and crime number before issuing another prescription!!!! Would the police even give a crime number for this.

also my friend a few months ago left tramadol a controlled drug behind on holiday and her doctors issued a new prescription no problem at all. They did not contact the hotel or anything.

just for information this is the first time this has happened so there is no pattern of me doing it before

Seems a bit OTT if there’s no back story and the medication isn’t one desired by recreational users. Like you, I think police will hunt you as no crime committed.

Redgreenfroggy · 09/08/2024 16:21

Hunt me- I hope not

I would ring and say the police wouldn't give you a crime number.

Never heard of this happening in all my working life 😅 I work in pharmacy and regularly have patients loosing meds who call asking for help. Doc just issues a new script and that's it. There are some exceptions where it may be a bit more thorough such as anti depressants/ addictive meds, known suicidal patients, but Evan then its usually not a problem if its clear it isn't a regular thing. I think the police would have a right laugh once you get off the phone!

Seems strange unless you have a history of ordering more frequently than you should, or are considered at risk of suicide. Either that or the surgery have had a problem with this type of thing (large numbers of people ordering extra things to abuse or sell on) and has decided on a blanket policy.

My advice would be to speak to the practice manager, be extremely calm and rational, ask them to state their reasons and why they are asking you to report a non crime to the police. Then say it isn’t possible to report a non crime to the police, and they have a duty to help you, and how are they going to do this?

You could report them lost to police and ask for a reference, that should be ok. Police can't give a crime reference where no crime committed so seems a bit daft surgery given that as only option.

Redgreenfroggy · 09/08/2024 16:27

it’s citalopram 10mg. I need 18 tablets to make up for what I have lost. not even a full month.
yes my friend also left hers in an English hotel

Annoying for you if you have no history of anything dodgy with medication and if your prescription is a common anti depressant (surely being on anti-d’s is very common these days!).

I would assume the GP/practice has had an issue before with someone getting regular repeats for ‘lost medication’ and either overdosing or selling the drugs. There’s surely a reason they have such a strict policy now.

Purpleraiin · 09/08/2024 16:28

Just realised you said anti depressants! It still shouldn't be an issue for you to the point they ask you to ring the police. Offer you an appointment to make sure you are genuine and aren't struggling, yes.... ring the police though, bit OTT. I think what getoutplan has said would be a good approach

Izzynohopanda · 09/08/2024 16:29

Seems a bit over the top. I was a prescription clerk and we never went to that level, even with addicts (usually codeine). We would just order a weeks worth or so, just to cover the lost quantity.

I have rung the doctor again and the practice manager is ringing me back. The thing is we are going away on Tuesday and that’s when I run out. I don’t want the horrible head zings that come when you go cold turkey especially while we are away. I also have seizures and stopping the medication dead could affect them as well.

oh well if I have to ring the police then i guess I have to ring the police. They also want to speak to the person who destroyed the tablets. Kind of worried I am going to get someone in trouble.
