To wonder why more adults don't wear rash vests

On holiday in Greece, it's 41 degrees and rising. I'm wearing my long sleeved rash vest in the pool. It's so easy, don't have to worry about how long I've been in the water for or re applying the sun cream all over my body. Its also great for keeping cool if you leave it on after a swim.

A few kids are wearing them but I'm the only adults. So many burnt shoulders here. Why aren't they a 'thing'?

Love mine! I come up in a rash with too much sun exposure, no matter how much cream I apply, so to be honest I don’t care what anyone thinks I look like. I would probably look worse covered in a horrible itchy blotchy rash!

We went to the pool or beach every day in the summer when we lived abroad. So much easier to just put uv tops on than to suncream every inch of myself and 2 kids!

I would wear a bikini top underneath for the support. And I don’t find them hot at all. In fact they are more cooling if they’re wet. I’d never sit in the direct sun if I had a choice so I wouldn’t be sunbathing in it anyway. Usually it dries quickly but a full day at the beach I might take it off and replace with a dry tshirt for when I’m out of the water and then it’ll dry really quickly in the sun for when I go back in.

I would need a bikini/swimsuit underneath for the bra support

Makes sense for lots of people who need that.

I’m tall but not busty, I always take padding out of any bikini/tankini/cosi and I don’t even like those secret support style elastic inserts for under bust.

Always best to go with whatever suits your needs

When you hit your 60's you really should be grateful for a life well lived and still being here and not worrying about looking your age. It doesn't matter if you look a bit younger, getting to 65 tends to even everyone out.

Tell that to the well tanned wrinklies who are spending a fortune on magic moisturisers, trying to get rid of age spots or covering up sun damage. You can tell those who spent a lot of time sunbathing even in their 50s. I am sorry for those who develop skin cancer.

And very surprisingly one can have a life well-lived without sun burn. In a similar vein it is possible to enjoy a party without downing loads of alcohol

I'm a fair skinned celt and always wear factor 50 tops. My current one is decathlon. For me that is freedom ... I burn through factor 50. Actually im burning through the top too ! But I sit in shade when not swimming. Married into a sallow skinned family but it's cover all the way for me. And they can be attractive! I also have lovely boxer length swim shorts

honestly today was the first day i'd heard of such a thing. As a "melanin enhanced" person I don't think they're meant for me. I love the sun, it makes feel effervescent :)

What the point of being out in the sun if you're going to be covered u like a beekeeper? might as well just go to norway and save the hassle

So you only enjoy being out in the sun if you are wearing a bra and undies or a swimsuit? I wear a rashie so I can spend more time at the beach , swimming, body surfing, beach cricket etc with less time having to apply sunscreen and no worries about the more sensitive areas getting burnt.

The word ‘rashie’ is making me cringe

Arrivapercy · 09/08/2024 22:57

I tend to choose to stay in the shade in the hottest part of the day.

I don't like to be completely covered up though. I want the vitamin D on my skin.

Arrivapercy · 09/08/2024 22:59

Also i don't go on holiday to places that get so hot.

I prefer uk summer temperatures.

Because I like the heat and the sun, being able to swim, go to the beach etc.

the point is I don’t want skin cancer, and I don’t like the greasy feel of sunscreen. So I cover up. Keeps me cool, I can pop in and out of the pool all day without having to faff with sun cream.

just because I choose to cover up doesn’t mean I don’t love the sun 🙄. It just makes life easier.

But it's the truth. People just don't want to hear it.

Atina321 · 10/08/2024 19:22

I have started wearing a long sleeve swimsuit in outdoor pools, it really is so much better than continuously reapplying suncream. Also even factor 50 I still burn!

Atina321 · 10/08/2024 19:24

BunfightBetty · 09/08/2024 15:23

Yes, but that’s still really hot to wear tight around your armpits and down your arms when it’s pushing 40 degrees. I couldn’t bear it. I like the feeling of a breeze and the sun/water on bare skin.

I do take skin cancer risk very seriously, as I had it in my 30s and am very fair. IME a good quality high factor sunscreen works perfectly, as long as it’s applied frequently and I would much rather do that. I’m going to shower at the end of the day anyway.

Have you tried it? I wore mine in 35+ in Florida and really didn’t feel at all hot.

thisisrubbish · 10/08/2024 19:39

I have had so many pre cancerous skin problems that I just don’t swim outside or sunbathe. Only wear long sleeves and carry an umbrella so I don’t have to wear a hat, which makes me sweaty and gives me a headache.
only wish there had been Rash tops when I was a kid!

lilywillywoo · 10/08/2024 20:34

I’ve got red hair and pale Scottish skin, I love the sun but would burn within minutes if I didn’t have a rash vest on in the pool. Also hat and copious sunscreen.

SuperBlondie28 · 10/08/2024 20:35

Have ordered 2 rash vests from Amazon. Unfortunately I never set out to get burnt, wear 50 spf, but when I do, I get the most unbelievable unbearable itching on my skin on my back and shoulders and chest. I think some sufferers call it the 'devil's itch' or 'hells itch'. It ruins the holiday for me. Anti histamines do nothing. Nsaids do nothing. Water makes it worse. Hoping the rash vest will stop this misery 🤞🏻

theduchessofspork · 10/08/2024 20:36

Cos I want the feel of sun my skin, as humans have for tens of millennia. Sun is life.

Applying sun screen and/or staying in the shade at midday is a small price to pay.

If I saw you I’d assume you had just come in from kayaking or had a heat rash issue.

😁

Hopefully the PP is an Aussie

Tis some excuse

eastegg · 10/08/2024 21:24

The attitude of ‘we don’t get much sun in the UK, we’re going to make the most of it when we do’ is deeply ingrained. And skin cancer is something that happens to other people and/or way in the future when I’m old. And I don’t look good in one. These are the reasons.

Same reasons hardly anyone wears a hat. A dermatologist told me years ago to never ever go out without a hat between March and October. I imagine if all Brits saw a dermatologist many would be told the same. But people don’t wear them. Hell I don’t wear one anything like enough, and I like hats.

lemarr · 10/08/2024 21:35

I just don’t burn, I tan, and I assume many others are the same based on what I see on holiday. I assume that’s why! If you burn, great idea.

dumpling123 · 10/08/2024 21:39

Can anyone recommend a nice oversized rash vest and shorts for a larger lady? I think they'd be ideal for pootering around the beach with the kids - if I get wet it's not the end of the world but I don't have to be in swimming togs. Don't need to go under a wetsuit.

PC7102 · 10/08/2024 21:42

I normally am in the shade when outside the pool on holiday and also avoid going places when they will be that hot, so I don’t really burn to the point of needing a rash vest. My husband wore one when in Florida but he has paler skin than me

Florrieboo · 10/08/2024 22:04

I wear one all through the summer and it is very common where I live. When I see people saying "I don't burn, I tan" it makes me cringe. A "tan" is sun damage, tanning is not good for your skin.

Azaleahead · 10/08/2024 22:28

I wear a (Roxy) swim t-shirt rather than an actual rash vest as I don’t like wrestling my way in and out of a tight wet top. Tbh, I don’t massively like the feel of it to swim in - but then I didn’t massively enjoy being told my melanoma was stage 3 either.

Im very pale so it’s a no brainer for me if I want to spend a decent amount of time swimming, and I can happily spend hours in the sea. I can understand it’s not for everyone but if you’re not wearing UV cover-up swimwear then please do wear suncream instead!!

Rhaenys · 10/08/2024 22:34

I’d prefer to keep applying sun cream and stay in the shade.
