To wonder why more adults don't wear rash vests

On holiday in Greece, it's 41 degrees and rising. I'm wearing my long sleeved rash vest in the pool. It's so easy, don't have to worry about how long I've been in the water for or re applying the sun cream all over my body. Its also great for keeping cool if you leave it on after a swim.

A few kids are wearing them but I'm the only adults. So many burnt shoulders here. Why aren't they a 'thing'?

Not to mention - some suntan lotions are bad for the ocean life as well as plastic bottled. So using less of that and wearing a reusable rash vest is better for env.

We went to Florida a few years ago, I made sure me and DD had long sleeved swim suits and long board shorts for the water parks. DH chose not to wear one and got burnt on his shoulders and back, sun cream washes off pretty quickly in the pool and it's a hassle to keep trailing back to the lockers to reapply it. I wouldn't go in the pool abroad in the hot sun without being covered but I'm very, very white like a milk bottle and burn very quickly.

HermioneMakepeace0 · 09/08/2024 13:27

I think I would dry right up if my husband wore a rash vest outside of a scuba diving situation 😬

Lilyhatesjaz · 09/08/2024 13:29

I wear mine paddleboarding, I always cover up as I burn really easily due to medication.
Mine was quite cheap from mountain wear house. It's made of swimsuit material so it feels like wearing a more covering swimsuit rather than like wearing clothes.

They don't feel like normal wearing clothes though.

They are expensive for a decent one…,the cheap ones aren’t worth it as they don’t have the protection ….and lots of adults don’t stay that long in a pool ( well not me…I’m in and out) ….,my GC wear long sleeved bathers abroad …..they do have a couple of rashies but been bought for them by Aussie relatives

Fifteentreefrogs · 09/08/2024 13:31

Oh and to add also despite never wearing a rash vest in my life I've only ever burnt once as a teen. I'm very pale too and usually wear factor 50 but the one time I burnt I wore factor 15 because I thought 'ill try that out' well it taught me a lesson and I wore factor 50 again ever since!
I've been to plenty of hot countries.. I don't tend to lie out on a beach or in the sun round a pool tho. I just go swimming then I go sit in the shade.
I feel like rash vests are for people in the sea a long time doing water sports etc
Or young kids who don't notice when they've been playing in the sun too long.
As an adult I just don't sit in direct sunlight for large amounts of time.
I don't know how people do it tbh.. even if I wanted to I'd have a raging headache and feel sick within a few mins.

NoraLuka · 09/08/2024 13:31

They look really uncomfortable. I wear a wetsuit for windsurfing and I imagine a rash vest feels similar. It would spoil being on the beach for me, I just wear sunscreen and/or a t shirt and hat.

InWalksBarberalla · 09/08/2024 13:32

I'm in australia and they are very common here. Much less fussing with sunscreen when you are spending a lot of time at the beach or outdoor pool and better protection. When you see a sunburnt person here its generally a british tourist.

They're really not expensive. UPF 50+ ones start at less than £10, maybe £15 for long sleeve. What additional protection do expensive ones provide?

grywknd · 09/08/2024 13:37

I wear them to keep warm!
UK sea swimming Grin I don’t like wetsuits.

poppymango · 09/08/2024 13:37

I think a lot of people simply want the tan.

I’ve considered a rash vest but I don’t go on sunny holidays enough (cue tiny violin) so never bought one.

Do you just wear a normal swimsuit underneath?

You can get a rashie swimsuit…or a rashie top to wear over normal swimsuit

LoobyDoop2 · 09/08/2024 13:39

I really hate having my arms covered in hot weather, especially with tight synthetic material. I take a rash vest on holiday just in case I get a bit burnt and still want to swim, but fortunately I’ve never had to use it yet.

Hardingham291 · 09/08/2024 13:43

OptimismvsRealism · 09/08/2024 12:18

Aren't they unbearably hot? They look really uncomfortable. I just stay in the shade.

No, they're the complete opposite , keep you cool for hours once they're wet.

Twinklefloss · 09/08/2024 13:45

@Hardingham291 i agree with you. I wear a “cool” zip through surf label one and have done so for the last 20 years. Don’t fancy dying of melanoma like my grandma. It’s brilliant for preventing sunburn.

blubberball · 09/08/2024 13:46

I wear them 🙋 Long sleeved top and swim leggings. I'm ginger and burn easily. It also covers up my body which is nothing to be showing off on the beach or at the pool. I find it more flattering on me. I don't get why people want their arse cheeks hanging out at a water park, but here we are

Summertimer · 09/08/2024 13:46

I’m a surfer, a rash vest is to protect you under a wetsuit from wetsuit rash. It may have uv protection but if I’m not in a wetsuit then I’m wearing uv protection swimwear for swimming not what I would call a rash vest

i have several swimwear top options that fall into this category. I looked up the last 2 I bought, they are not called a rash vest.

Most rash vests couldn’t be worn without a bikini top/tankini etc underneath but uv swimwear can.

TheOGCCL · 09/08/2024 13:48

I've taken to wearing a rash vest in my local swimming pool - since the cost of living crisis it's very cold. I'm tempted by a full on wet suit. Needless to say open/cold water swimming is not for me.

Pablova · 09/08/2024 13:49

dbeuowlxb173939 · 09/08/2024 12:33

You're clearly not a redhead then! It's very difficult in hot weather where there's no shade like in the pool, even with factor 50 on

I’m a pale red head and never burn, well not since being a kid.
I love feeling sun and warm breeze on my skin.

Factor 30, and shade when too hot.

Not all red heads go lobster red and need to hide in the share like vampires. It gets right on my tits the ridiculous stereotyping people apply to pale red heads.

olivecapes · 09/08/2024 13:50

Well for the same reason I wear flip flops instead of "sensible" ugly sandals, I don't like the look of them? I burn easily but manage fine just reapplying when I get out of the water.

NotSmallButFunSize · 09/08/2024 13:50

Cos it's hard enough to find a decent bikini to put my massive boobs in, can't imagine a tight rash vest would be much easier!

blubberball · 09/08/2024 13:58

I have massive boobs also, and I have the long sleeved swim top no problem. With the swim leggings, I don't have to worry about bikini line either. I love swimming and water parks. I feel much more comfortable going now in the long sleeved swim top and swim leggings

coxesorangepippin · 09/08/2024 14:00

Wtf with these comments

I like a tan

They are unflattering

Hmm
NeedthatFridayfeeling · 09/08/2024 14:01

Lilacapples · 09/08/2024 14:02

I couldn’t think of anything worse to be honest! Boiling hot and sleeves 🥵
