To wonder why more adults don't wear rash vests

On holiday in Greece, it's 41 degrees and rising. I'm wearing my long sleeved rash vest in the pool. It's so easy, don't have to worry about how long I've been in the water for or re applying the sun cream all over my body. Its also great for keeping cool if you leave it on after a swim.

A few kids are wearing them but I'm the only adults. So many burnt shoulders here. Why aren't they a 'thing'?

It's swimming costume material, not hot

Yes, but that’s still really hot to wear tight around your armpits and down your arms when it’s pushing 40 degrees. I couldn’t bear it. I like the feeling of a breeze and the sun/water on bare skin.

I do take skin cancer risk very seriously, as I had it in my 30s and am very fair. IME a good quality high factor sunscreen works perfectly, as long as it’s applied frequently and I would much rather do that. I’m going to shower at the end of the day anyway.

honestly today was the first day i'd heard of such a thing. As a "melanin enhanced" person I don't think they're meant for me. I love the sun, it makes feel effervescent :)

What the point of being out in the sun if you're going to be covered u like a beekeeper? might as well just go to norway and save the hassle

People with dark skin are often diagnosed with skin cancer at later stages which can be deadly if melanoma. I forget who said it, but dark skin is melanin, not teflon.

Everyone should be wearing broad spectrum sunscreen daily. There is no such thing as a safe suntan. 🩷

ItsAlrightDarling · 09/08/2024 15:26

Weird assumption on here that everyone not wearing a rash vest is some idiot sun worshipper heading for skin cancer.
Never worn one. Never had sun burn. Because I know how to use sun cream, I don’t sunbathe, I sit in the shade and I stay inside in the hottest part of the day.

I consider it a huge failing if I come back fromholiday any less deathly white than when I set off.

Finally, someone with my ethos!!

It took me a while! I think people are less likely now to comment on a lack of a tan when you get back than they used to.

I travel solo so putting sun cream on my back is tricky without help.

I wear one of my running T-shirts on top of my costume if I'm swimming for any length of time. I guess it's similar to a rash vest. Doesn't go droopy like a normal T-shirt would.

Great idea. I'm off yo Greece soon and will take one of my walking t shirts to wear.

Don’t forget ignorant and don’t care for the environment.

The sanctimonious tutting over what another adult chooses to wear / not wear is entertaining, though.

Just bought two Hunza G bikinis for my hols next week. I wouldn’t be seen dead in a rash vest. I’m fair skinned but I would rather wear something stylish on holiday, than look like I was going Kayaking with the Girl Guides.

I think more coverage is becoming trendier. Gen Z and alpha are very clued in about sun damage. Short sleeved swim suits have been quite popular for a while now.
How stylish can an overpriced plain bikini be anyway?

NicoleSkidman · 09/08/2024 16:08

Motomum23 · 09/08/2024 11:31

They were designed to prevent wetsuit rash - that's why most adults done wear them in a swimming pool. Our bodies were designed to be in the sunshine.

Eh? Northern European skin is absolutely not designed to be in intense sun for prolonged periods of time. If it was, we wouldn’t be white.

OP, I’m going to Greece next week and will be the only one in the pool wearing a rash vest, just like I was last year. I’ll be the only one not burnt/risking skin cancer.

I have the pictured Decathlon rash vest. It’s long in the body.

No idea what “swim grade” means but it’s identical to what I have previously bought from Roxy/Billabong/etc and it’s UPF 50 so it does the job as far as I’m concerned. It just goes over my bikini.

Ok so if it’s swimwear it does what swimwear does as a top and it’s made of fabric instantly recognisable as swimwear. I wouldn’t wear anything under that.

I’m 5ft 11, long arms long body. Those decathlon ones come up all wrong on me

Some rash guard tops can function as swimwear but they are generally thinner and not suitable to wear without a bikini top or cosi whatever underneath. Those are what I might wear under a wet suit.

But it would be wet because you’re using in the pool/sea so it wouldn’t make you hot at all.

So is it okay to wear a rash vest over a bikini if you’re just getting in the pool? I’m not seeing what the problem is. The Decathlon top is identical to what you’d see on an Australian beach on many adults enjoying the ocean, whether surfing or not.

Many things are going to come up short if you’re 5’11”!

PeloMom · 09/08/2024 16:28

in our family we all wear them. So much easier than re applying etc.

Anything goes, but some rash vests might make you look like you are in a we t shirt contest in the 90s, some look more like that Decathlon one.

I have ton of swimwear that might be like an Aussie beachwear look as it goes.

Yeah I’m tall, nearly all things are too short in some regard 🤣

Summertimer · 09/08/2024 16:34

Oh I even have a uv hoodie - but not for swimming

HoppingPavlova · 09/08/2024 12:36

Aren't they unbearably hot? They look really uncomfortable. I just stay in the shade

Fuck no. They actually keep you cooler as don’t allow the sun through. Also not uncomfortable. I only started wearing them as an adult when I had kids to ‘model it’ as normal behaviour, but didn’t find it uncomfortable at all. I now even wear them if sightseeing in a hot place, as they are super light and keep you cooler than normal light clothes that cover you up in the sun. It does look weird as fuck if the place you are at is nowhere near a beach but I stopped giving a shit about what others think decades ago, I only care about comfort and health.

I agree. They are much cooler.

you can also wet them if it’s very hot to feel even cooler.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/08/2024 17:07

Does anyone know if they’re allowed in uk indoor public pools?
Not comfortable in a cossie after surgery.

longlocks · 09/08/2024 17:18

In France, you are not allowed to wear a t-shirt in pools and similar rules apply to men - have to wear budgie smuggler swimming trunks - like Speedos. No shorts.

I've never had any bother. I sometimes wear one if I'm splashing about with the DCs, and often wear one if swimming outdoors in strong sunshine- getting suncream on my back evenly is tricky.

Sun cream needs reapplying, and frequently if in and out of water. A rash vest is simpler and more reliable.

I like getting out into the sun, but use suncream for prolonged exposure and covering up is sometimes the simplest protection and cooler in very strong sun.

What does surprise me is people associating UV strength purely on temperature, not considering time of day, sun angle and underestimating factors like the wind masking how intense the sun feels on the skin. Also reflective surfaces such as water intensifying UV.

Need to read your pool's rules.

It’s only wet until it dries again though. I’ll take your word for it that they’re not as suffocating as I’ve been thinking, but I’ll stick with cream as it works for me.

Sunshine9218 · 09/08/2024 18:57

I always wear a tshirt when swimming outside cause I hate burnt shoulders! I hate the clingyness of swimming costumes and feel less conscious with a top over it too.

T shirt made of swimsuit material

I would need a bikini/swimsuit underneath for the bra support

AntiHop · 09/08/2024 19:30

I've always worn one on my holidays to Greece. Much less hassle than suncreaming my back.
