'Sneaking' two extra children into hotel room booked for two adults and two children

AIBU in thinking this may have implications regarding insurance etc?

Friend is off on holiday later today to a large hotel abroad with her DH and four DC aged between 4 and 16. Not a package, no meals included and flights were booked separately.

The room has a small bedroom, bathroom and living area with a sofa bed. It sleeps 4. They've booked it for two adults and two children. That's the maximum number of people allowed.

She wants to check in with DH, their two youngest boys and all their luggage, and have the two oldest boys wait outside until they're 'sneaked' in a little while later.

I think that whilst this is logistically possible, it will have implications but not sure what these implications might be. Friend thinks there's no problem with this and nobody will bat an eyelid.

AIBU in saying it's not a good idea?

They wouldn't know but if the parents were killed or incapacitated nobody would be looking for the children.

Some people are chilled about this level of risk - serious but vanishingly unlikely. I'm not.

Christ almighty ... what are the chances of both parents being killed or incapacitated ... I can't believe some people live like this! How do you leave the house!

It obviously doesn't impact me directly, I'm not going with them, but was just trying to understand the implications of over occupancy from the perspective of the hotel and how that might affect their stay.

They're going to Spain.

It won’t be the first time or the last that people have done this and to be honest with the money that is charged by holiday companies during school holidays I can’t say I blame them.
I can’t understand why you’ve posted about it though, it’s quite frankly none of your business is it now…..

Yes that's exactly what the non-grabby cheeky fucker families do. I get it. We have three kids and so many rooms are set up for 2 adults and 2 kids. But it never occurred to us to think fuck it, we'll just book for 2 plus 2 and sneak the other one in to sleep on a pool toy.

i am not sure what is the problem with having 2 double rooms with extra child bed in each to cater for family of 6. what exactly is CF?

fishandchipsandvinegar · 09/08/2024 11:32

I've done this many times at hotels in Las Vegas, albeit with adults and not children. I've never had a problem. Insurance never crossed my mind, especially as there are hotel guests who invite one night stands up to their rooms. When has that ever been an insurance issue?

ChristmasFluff · 09/08/2024 11:32

This is one of those situations where she'll wish she hadn't because it will make the holliday shit, one way or another.

I'd rather stay at home

jennylamb1 · 09/08/2024 11:32

My money's on the hotel catching on fire while they're burying a body in the woods. Grin

GlassRadiator · 09/08/2024 11:34

Have they done it for daddy so he can have more beer money ?

Butwhybecause · 09/08/2024 11:34

Where will they all sleep?

It doesn't sound like a restful holiday to me.

No no you misunderstand. The normal families with 4 kids book two rooms and sort themselves out with the combination of sleeping arrangements which suits.

The cheeky fuckers book one room for 2 adults and 2 kids and pile in two extra.

Scirocco · 09/08/2024 11:35

That sleeping arrangement sounds like it'll last about 2 nights before the kids want to kill each other.

Fire safety is a potential issue there. In the event of a fire (or other emergency), all the records will show 2 children and 2 adults for that booking, so that's what emergency responders will be looking for. That might not feel like a big deal to some people, but the hotel is likely to care about it. If they're caught, they're at real risk of being asked to leave.

Tracker1234 · 09/08/2024 11:35

It sort of is the other residents business! How would you like it if you had paid properly for your stay and guests were sneaking in other people. Facilities are for the guests not for random people who the hotel doesnt know about. They are also probably the sort of people who would try and reserve SIX sunbeds in the middle of the night.

You normally need to give your passports in on check in for registration.

Can you imagine your friend being pulled up on this and asked to leave. We will then see the Daily Mail 'sad face' story and how we should 'think of the children'!!

Ah OK, I misunderstood 😅

To be fair, there's a bit of difference between having an unplanned one night stand and planning on sneaking in 2 extra kids for 10 days!

MildredSauce · 09/08/2024 11:37

Dick move, simple as. And do the kids know they need to maintain a lie for 10 nights?

theworldsmad · 09/08/2024 11:38

Macandcheeese · 09/08/2024 09:09

I work in a hotel. If someone did this and we had a fire we would only be looking for the people booked into the room.

This is not thought through.
What if the 2 people legally in room 227 went out for dinner? You can never tell how many people are in a hotel at any given time.

Tracker1234 · 09/08/2024 11:38

They probably think they are being so clever dont they and claiming they dont have money for anything else. Thing is it will be a truly horribly holiday, the room will be a mess and the kids will end up fighting with each other.

I would rather stay at home cutting my toenails than go on a sort of holiday like this.

BippityBopper · 09/08/2024 11:39

Your "friend" 😂

Ponoka7 · 09/08/2024 11:39

Macandcheeese · 09/08/2024 09:09

So you are told to sweep the building and not get out yourselves? The fire brigade would advise everyone to leave and if you don't, you aren't insured and would be sacked, to save the sick pay. The fire brigade don't go off guest lists, their procedures don't change.
It depends on the layout and how vigilant the staff are. The hotel could kick them out, but most managers would charge a supplement unless it was against local laws or they hated the British.

DiscoBeat · 09/08/2024 11:39

Terrible parenting to let the children see and be a part of this, since it's basically theft.

betterangels · 09/08/2024 11:40

BeaRF75 · 09/08/2024 10:26

I am astonished at the number of people who think this is OK. If you can't afford the appropriate number of rooms for you and your 4 kids either 1) don't go on holiday 2) buy a big tent and holiday at home or 3) don't have 4 kids, FFS! The "cost of living crisis" is not an excuse, because if you're on your financial uppers, you don't jet off to Spain!

Exactly. It's entitled af. Stop thinking going abroad on holiday is a human right.

creamofroses · 09/08/2024 11:42

namechangetheworld · 09/08/2024 10:14

I wouldn't openly criticise my friend's holiday choices, no, unless it was something life threatening. I would nod and smile. It would be different if she specifically asked if you for your opinion, but she didn't.

It wasn't 'concern' that brought you here. You criticised her, she fell out with you, and now you've turned to Mumsnet in a bid to justify sticking your nose in and feel better about yourself.

This is not a "holiday choice", ffs. It is dishonest, illegal, grifting, and cheap.

BiscuityBoyle · 09/08/2024 11:45

CheeseWisely · 09/08/2024 10:51

@Izzymoon You've never been asked to confirm your name or room number on arrival back to a hotel in the middle of the night? Just saunter in and straight into the lift? I wouldn't want to stay in any hotel with such lax security Shock

I’ve stayed in plenty of hotels and never had to do that.

Isthisit2 · 09/08/2024 11:45

@FrenchandSaunders I read this as being decapitated at first!
I think it sounds really uncomfortable and stressful but I don’t understand why the op cares.

TheNoodlesIncident · 09/08/2024 11:46

I wouldn't be able to do this myself, it feels so dishonest. It would be like booking a boat trip for four people and sneaking an extra two on board then trying to justify it with "but the boat's going on the trip anyway, and we've paid for four of us, what harm is it for two of us to travel for free?" So she's happy to pay for accommodation for four people but not happy to pay to accommodate all six?

I couldn't do it, it would be cheating and I'd fret that we were going to be caught and there could be unpleasantness about it. I want to feel relaxed and worry-free on holiday, I couldn't if I'd lied on the booking. I also wouldn't want my kid to feel this kind of shenanigans is OK either.

SweetLining · 09/08/2024 11:47

I am astonished at how many of you are so cross about this! Other people are doing far worse things than sneaking extra people into hotel rooms. Yes, they might have issues when they get there but so what, they will just have to deal with it when the time comes. As for a fire, they don't take a count of how many people are expected to be in the room before they rescue everyone 🙄
