'Sneaking' two extra children into hotel room booked for two adults and two children

AIBU in thinking this may have implications regarding insurance etc?

Friend is off on holiday later today to a large hotel abroad with her DH and four DC aged between 4 and 16. Not a package, no meals included and flights were booked separately.

The room has a small bedroom, bathroom and living area with a sofa bed. It sleeps 4. They've booked it for two adults and two children. That's the maximum number of people allowed.

She wants to check in with DH, their two youngest boys and all their luggage, and have the two oldest boys wait outside until they're 'sneaked' in a little while later.

I think that whilst this is logistically possible, it will have implications but not sure what these implications might be. Friend thinks there's no problem with this and nobody will bat an eyelid.

AIBU in saying it's not a good idea?

@cannellonies

We usually do when we check in. But it’s not the sort of hotels that would make you wear bracelets tbf.
Wear bracelets?

LostittoBostik · 09/08/2024 11:13

If you do this and there's an emergency they won't be looking to rescue the children you haven't named.
It will also invalidate any travel insurance. And if caught (which you will) will probably lead to you having to pay a huge fine of some sort.
Don't bother.

@Misthios 😂😂 oh the outrage! I don’t do this btw but I also think that hotels are massively ripping people off , a standard double for 750 euros for two nights is ridiculous. I wouldn’t sneak extra people in but I don’t get why the op cares. Also I’m waiting for the “ they shouldn’t have had 4 kids “ 😂 like that’s a solution.

Well the obvious solution if you chose to have 4 kids would be to pay for two rooms, don’t you think.

If the prices are too high people won't pay them and the hotel will either go out of business, or lower their prices. Have you not heard of supply and demand economics? If you think something is too expensive then you just don't buy it, whether it's a bottle of wine or a hotel room. You don't come up with creative ways to get that thing you think is too expensive anyway.

Yeah like some people mentioned above. I’d hate to have to wear one.

Tracker1234 · 09/08/2024 11:15

Where on earth are they going to sleep. Bed linen? On the floor?? What a horrible holiday it will be with them all on top of each other.

They won't be eating at the hotel but they'll use the pool. I did ask about wristbands, would they be needed to access the pool area but as they're not all inclusive she said no.

Places I've stayed in recent years you still get a wristband to give you access to the facilities, it's just a different colour.

With regards to the fire thing, it makes no sense to me, as pp have said, people can be anywhere so how would they know. But when we had a water outage and insurance would pay for us to go to a hotel, we didn't actually stay, just needed a shower. So I tried to book a single room and explained the situation. The hotel was adamant they couldn't do that for fire reasons, and ended up giving us a family room but discounting the price down to that of a single. There was absolutely no way they could knowingly have too many in a room.

Not the point though. What your friend is doing is fraud/ theft. I have sympathy for people with three children looking for one night in a Premier Inn, but going to Spain with four kids and not paying for their accommodation is beyond excusable.

They wouldn't know but if the parents were killed or incapacitated nobody would be looking for the children.

Some people are chilled about this level of risk - serious but vanishingly unlikely. I'm not.

Oldest two are quite big for their age and the 16 year old could easily pass as an adult. They plan to buy lilos/ inflatable beds for the youngest two who are apparantly looking forward to sleeping on them. All four kids will be in the living room, parents in the bedroom.

you just get 2 doubles with extra child bed in each and stay 1 adult+2 children in each of the room; or go down interconnecting family rooms/air BnB or whatever options.

Differentstarts · 09/08/2024 11:18

The problem is the room will be catered for 4 not 6 so not only will there not be enough beds but also not enough towels, cups ect it all just sounds a bit crap

sesquipedalian · 09/08/2024 11:19

WishRightNow · 09/08/2024 10:24

I know a family who have done this a few times. They have never been caught and plan to keep doing it. Sounds stupid and stressful to me.

Not just stupid and stressful but downright dishonest - and what sort of example are they setting to their children?

Tracker1234 · 09/08/2024 11:19

The room will be a shit tip as well. The staff will know as they are staying for so long.

Yes that's exactly what the non-grabby cheeky fucker families do. I get it. We have three kids and so many rooms are set up for 2 adults and 2 kids. But it never occurred to us to think fuck it, we'll just book for 2 plus 2 and sneak the other one in to sleep on a pool toy.

ComealongMartha · 09/08/2024 11:22

I suppose if they want to risk getting caught and are happy with that sort of holiday then let them get on with it.

I am an awful liar and couldn’t relax. I also wouldn’t want children all over the floor while on holiday!

Anonym00se · 09/08/2024 11:22

We’re sort of doing this tonight, in the UK. We’re going to a concert and DH and I had booked our room ages ago. Adult DD is coming down today, left booking until the last minute and the cheapest hotel room in the city was £800 (!!!!) for one night, so I invited her to bunk in with us. By an amazing stroke of luck, when DH and I checked into our double room yesterday, there was a double bed and a single bed. I really don’t think it’s that big a deal, though 6 of them will be a squash in one room for a week! But that’s their problem, and nothing to do with you.

Demonhunter · 09/08/2024 11:23

Really depends on the manager and staff. I've worked in places abroad where they couldn't give a hoot ans pay no attention and other places where the manager and/or at least 1 staff member is scarily vigilant and won't tolerate rule breaks or over occupation. They may be offered an additional room if caught and if available, however, thats unlikely in Aug in the height of the season. So they're spinning the wheel but it's their choice.

Honestly the idea of being asked to confirm details like this sounds incredibly tacky. Hotels have always had a large open ground floor with all night concierge.
I’ve never experienced hotel locking the door.

The hotels that don’t have secure access areas, all of them.

AppleStrudelwithcream · 09/08/2024 11:26

Apart from the in the event of fire/emergency scenario likelihood is in a large hotel they won't notice and nothing much will happen?

Might depend on layout of hotel a bit too but most I've been in wouldn't notice extra guests and you could say the older ones are visitors staying somewhere else?

Iasonnas · 09/08/2024 11:27

"I work in a hotel. If someone did this and we had a fire we would only be looking for the people booked into the room."

🤣🤣🤣 such horseshit. The things some people write.

itsgettingweird · 09/08/2024 11:27

I'm on holiday just now. At no point have I given my holiday address to anyone

Did you have to hand your passports in at reception? I've usually had to do this and they say it's for registration.

namechangetheworld · 09/08/2024 11:11

Burden their friend with this knowledge.

Fuck me, she told her she's sneaking two kids into a hotel room. She didn't bury a body in the woods.

Love it 😂
Can't believe the furore on this!

Tracker1234 · 09/08/2024 11:29

Its effectively stealing! The other kids will have access to the hotel facilities for free. How would your friend feel if non residents starting using the pool and sitting on the sun beds. It would be bedlam. Their kids are non residents.

SarahB88 · 09/08/2024 11:29

There’s a lot of problems in Spain at the moment with tourism. I’d imagine that when housekeeping go in and see that the room is clearly over occupied they won’t hesitate to flag to management and the booking will be cancelled. But regardless of what country is being visited I wouldn’t risk this, I also work in a hotel and like others have said we can and do cancel bookings for things like this. I hope your friend has a back up plan because it’s likely to be tricky to get accommodation in Spain last minute. You were right to flag your concerns to her.

How the fuck is that bullshit?

You can't look for people you don't know are there?
