So

i know NHS band 8’s can’t claim OT payment- what be about lieu time?

AIBU that when working mon to Fri- having to travel nearly 7 hrs Sunday daytime and stay overnight for team meeting mon/tues I should get some time back?

I’ve asked the Q and been told essentially tough -travel in my own time. Having already done the travel and worked all the way down I’m feeling rather annoyed! Why should I give up my Sunday?
I accept starting early/ finishing late. This was giving up a rest day - or get up 4am…

thoughts - pls….?

We need more information. Is the team meeting at your place of work as stated in your contract? Or is it in a different location

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 09/08/2024 01:06

You're a band 8b which is very good money compared to a band 3 or 4. So just suck it up.

They're right. You travel in your own time. There isn't anything in the handbook to say in lieu for travel time.

I honestly can't be bothered with the moaning out of people. Also you chose to work during your travel time.

My colleague band 4 is having to do 4 hours travel next week twice. She's not getting anything.

Rhinohides · 09/08/2024 01:23

Why can’t b8 claim OT?

5475878237NC · 09/08/2024 01:56

It depends.I have to travel to a meeting once a month and get time off in lieu because it's been moved from remote to somewhere far away. It's perfectly reasonable to expect toil if you can't travel there same day by public transport.

lunar1 · 09/08/2024 03:19

Why is the travel so far?

tuttuttutt · 09/08/2024 03:24

If it's a one off I'd just get over it. Lots of people do stuff like that for work

Superstar22 · 09/08/2024 03:30

Do not work on the travel time. It’s ludicrous. You don’t owe them this. You are setting yourself up for burnout and giving them almost a days free work.
i wouldnt travel for 7 hours on a Sunday for any band, so why this is happening and can you work closer to home?

HaPPy8 · 09/08/2024 03:55

Not in my trust they can’t. The salary is considered to “do the job” not a number of hours really.

I think for the most part this is right too.

She worked extremely hard to be paid more than a 3 or 4 so no she shouldn't just suck it up.

AgathaMystery · 09/08/2024 05:53

Why are you working during travel time? Unless it’s a working day I wouldn’t.

This. We need more info

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 09/08/2024 06:41

Your are on between £72 -82k. 8b has criteria attached, as do all bands
No, you should not hive TOIL
In most jobs, travel is undertaken in one's own time. That's just life. People on minimum wage do not get paid to travel to work, why should someone on your salary be paid to do so?
I have worked in numerous jobs where travel on a weekend or evening was required; yes, you can claim travel expenses, but once you are on a decent wage, or in a management position, which an 8b is, getting toil is just a ridiculous concept. With the perks come some pain

Zen · 09/08/2024 06:45

Why are you traveling 7 hours to a team meeting? Are the rest of the team traveling 7 hours? Or is it a choice you made about where you work and live and relies on remote working?

AlexandraJJ · 09/08/2024 06:48

Wherever I have worked we’ve had TOIL as a 8+ when we’ve worked above contracted hours. I do although I only take about a third and it soon builds up again. I just think it comes with the territory to do what’s necessary to get the job done. Time back for travel time is discretionary. Some places allow some don’t. OT is also discretionary as it’s against AfC and I’ve known it happen in extenuating circs which is a pain for payroll as they have to manually adjust in order for ESR to pay it. There’s a health and wellbeing issue potentially here if anyone is working ridiculous hours in which case it needs raising with a manager

Mouthfulofquiz · 09/08/2024 06:50

Isn’t band 8b pay roughly £58-68k (a little less than the poster above says? I wouldn’t be doing a days’ travel for free on that wage. But I also wouldn’t expect the meeting I needed to attend to be on a Monday if it was that far away…

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 09/08/2024 06:52

Rhinohides · 09/08/2024 01:23

Why can’t b8 claim OT?

Because it is a management band

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 09/08/2024 06:54

Piggiesinblankets · 09/08/2024 05:45

Oh please, get over yourself. Of course senior managers should not be having TOIL.

olivehater · 09/08/2024 06:54

My boss is an 8b and claims overtime all the time.

Krampers · 09/08/2024 06:55

Yes OT/TOIL is usually for clinical staff who sometimes have unexpected clinical work outside of their normal hours. We cant just leave at 5 all the time like managers do.

BendingSpoons · 09/08/2024 06:55

What is your job role? Do you normally work remotely or are you part of a team working across the country? Is this a one off or will it be regular?

If you had to travel lots because you usually work remotely and don't travel, I'd suck it up as it evens out and you could live nearer. If you are in a team spread across the country and will do this semi regularly, I might fight it more.

I presume TOIL is allowed. If you worked Wed to Fri and attended the meeting on Mon/Tue you would get TOIL presumably. The issue is it was for travel. FWIW in my NHS team, OT is not allowed at any band. TOIL is allowed for specific reasons e.g. running training on a Saturday or evening. Travel isn't really an issue as we wouldn't need to go that far.

Literally just looked it up on NHS website to double check
So yes, it is a large salary

£62k-£72k surely?

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 09/08/2024 07:08

@Cheeesus yes, you are right. I saw the entire range of band 8!
Apologies everyone.
But it is still a senior management position, so no toil

Bjorkdidit · 09/08/2024 07:08

Well seeing as NHS Trusts are normally based in a particular location, it can't be a normal expectation of the job to have to travel for 7 hours to a meeting, because your normal work is fairly local.

Therefore, yes you absolutely should get the time back for spending a working day travelling to somewhere this far from your normal place of work. Unless you are choosing to live a long way from your trust and are a home worker, in this case, for a one off, I'd suck it up.

Plus NHS 8b isn't always management grades, it's also often specialist professional roles, so the meeting could be a CPD day or similar.

Counciltelly · 09/08/2024 07:10

I’m 8b and get toil but Im in a partly clinical role.

I wouldn’t get toil for travel to my normal place of work and wouldn’t claim for example for travel to conference etc if I was travelling out of working hours.

it was your choice to work all the Sunday. I can’t call my boss and say I’ve worked all Sunday cos it suited me, can I have Friday off please.

I could in an emergency negotiate in advance I would need to complete a project on my day off to meet a deadline and bank that time. But need discussed in advance.
