I must live in a parallel universe because I never do as much washing as the typical MN'er.

Me & 2 DS's aged 20 & 17. Usually one load of lights & one load io darks a week. Towels & bedding separately but again probably just one load a week.

And I dont have any outside space to hang washing up on. No tumble drier either so washing dried on 2 airers within 24 hours.

Same here. We’re just really strict and only wash stuff that genuinely needs it. I swear some on Mn wash things the minute they touch them!

FranceIsWhereItsAt · 08/08/2024 18:12

OP do you ever wear anything twice without washing it in between? It sounds like things are chucked in the wash whether they need it or not, maybe it's easier to just chuck it in the laundry than to hang it up to air??

Franticbutterfly · 08/08/2024 18:13

We are a family of 5 with 4 pets and do loads of washing. Most of it isn't mine though.

Mumof1andacat · 08/08/2024 18:24

I don't do as many loads as the average person on mumsnet. I generally do 2 a week. Never changes before or after a holiday. We are 2 adults and 1 11 year old. No pets or sports/gym kits.

dementedpixie · 08/08/2024 18:24

We do a lot of washing as 3 of us go to the gym or play rugby and football multiple times a week (dd does none of it!). I dont have a tumble dryer so have to hang on airers and the bannister

Mumof1andacat · 08/08/2024 18:24

We do have 2 cats but they don't wear clothes....

DappledThings · 08/08/2024 18:28

How many of you? We just got back from a week away, 2 adults and 2 children. 3 loads of washing the day we got back and that was it done. Included everyone's swimming towels and a waterproof bed mat thing.

RaininSummer · 08/08/2024 18:29

Apart from maybe towels and swimming costumes, why does a holiday make more washing than normal as surely you wear clothes at home too?

Doggymummar · 08/08/2024 18:30

I did two weeks worth today. 1coliur load and a few whites, we don't use much, but we do WFH

I think the difference is that at home I do it as I go along whereas after a holiday it’s all there in one big pile.
I wish we didn’t have much washing but my disabled child needs 3/4 outfit changes a day. On top of that both of my other children train 5 days a week in (different) sports so that’s a lot of sweaty clothes. Add mine and DH’s work, gym and casual clothes, plus towels/bedding etc, it does sometimes feel like we’re drowning in it.

ItsAlrightDarling · 08/08/2024 18:35

(Obviously the training gear etc isn’t needed on holiday, I was just explaining why some people have more washing than others!)

ChristmasFluff · 08/08/2024 18:35

Even if there is loads of washing, it's not like you're doing it with a tub and washboard, or even a twin-tub. Washing is surely just chucking it in the machine, then pegging out then bringing in. Or tumble dry and it's even easier.

The least bothersome of chores.

Coconutter24 · 08/08/2024 18:37

What’s the alternative no holiday and still have loads of washing to do, might as well stick a holiday in there to make it worthwhile lol

Bananalanacake · 08/08/2024 18:47

Depending on how sweaty clothes get you can wear clothes a few times before they need a wash.

Curtainpoles · 08/08/2024 18:48

I always try and wash while away. If a holiday in the sun, I'll take a tube of travel wash and wash things in the tub by hand every day and hang out to dry in the sun. For UK holidays i always book some Airbnb type place with a washing machine.

I love getting home with a suitcase of mostly clean clothes - always feel very smug Grin

Pmsl

This made me laugh

User name needs to be mumof1and2cats 😂😂

Crucible · 08/08/2024 18:52

I will only go self catering with a washing machine and with luck a tumble dryer (UK holidays only). I hate coming back with a load of smelly dirty washing. I think mine is slightly more onerous now (and it is only slight) because I have been reducing the use of kitchen roll and using torn up towels. I disinfect then wash them.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/08/2024 18:53

We have w washing machine when go away in tenerife. It's fab. Wash and dries in less than a day due to sun

So come home with clean clothes

Tho I def don't wash as much as some mners

Tue dark /towels

Fri lights /bedding

Sun pink dd

@Biggaybear you might have forgotten or maybe yours weren’t like this, but my young kids wee themselves or get food/mud/toothpaste/paint/playdoh all over their clothes and so can go through several changes of clothes a day - plus they get mine dirty - it all adds up and I have a sizeable pile just from one day!

SpaceRaiders · 08/08/2024 19:01

Washing whilst away is ridiculously expensive. Our hotel wanted €7 per item?! The trick is to book a service wash the day you get back. They came collected 3 suitcases worth, it returned 2 days later washed and ironed all for around £100.

Comedycook · 08/08/2024 19:02

Just back from holiday. Did 8 loads of washing in two days 😂

cardibach · 08/08/2024 19:02

I don’t get it. You’ll wear the same number of clothes as you would normally, surely? Why is it making more washing?

Yes but when you're at home, you don't go a whole week without putting a load of laundry on.

Me too, (though just UK) The last of it is just airing off and I will be going home with all but today's clothes clean, ready to put away.
