As others have said, service wash either on holiday which is what my friend does so she brings home a suitcase full of clean clothing and one day's dirty laundry but that is too risky for me, or a service wash when you arrive home. My friend just budgets that wash in with her holiday fund.

Talking about nightwear. I take 2 sets if I’m going away for a week OR a month. You wear them 8+ hours at a time (7x8= 56++), and if you’re holidaying in a warm place a week is too long without washing or changing. Envy

How dirty are you that you need new PJs every night? I put new underwear on for bed, but wear the same PJs for a week usually

I don't know how you read that I had fresh PJs every day. I meant 10 minutes on all the washing for the 4 of us. I wore the PJs for about 3 days. It was 32-34 degrees every day and even with the air con it was good to have fresh clothes more often.

I wonder if the people who don’t wash much don’t do much exercise? Or don’t sweat 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’ve got 2 sweaty gym kits and gym towels (mine and DH’s) a football kit (DD2) and a dance kit (DD1) just from today, plus my disabled child’s 3 changes of clothes.

I rarely shower at the gym, I do it at home, so no towel. Sports/gym/swimming gear goes in a sports wash (40 min cycle on my machine), usually once, maybe twice a week.
DH runs, so showers at home, and I'm not a sweaty person, so I don't need a mopping my face towel (but most who do have little ones)

I feel you.

There's six of us - two adults and four kids, and I feel like I'm drowning! I have to do at least one load a day and if I miss a day it's like Everest in the bathroom.

Currently on wash number 3 after landing back in England at 8pm yesterday. Not sure why people can't understand why you have more washing...

  1. I do a wash every day at home. It's been 10 days since we did a wash.
  2. We don't change for dinner and a disco when we are home every night which doubles the amount of clothes and underwear
  3. We don't go swimming every day at home.
Twoshoesnewshoes · 09/08/2024 09:45

On family holidays, I never stayed anywhere without a washing machine.
gites every time.
often the first thing I did was put a wash on 😂

When we get back with two suitcases of dirty laundry I drive to the local launderette and load up a couple of massive machines. I can get the whole lot washed and dried in a couple of hours, make sure it's all folded up and put it straight back into drawers.
Nowadays we mostly stay in AirBNB with washers and dryers and do it as we go along.

  1. Lots of us don’t do this. But even if you reschedule stuff it’s not more. And you can only have a suitcase each (at most) of clothes so surely not more than a load per person? Which is less than 10…
  2. If you wear clothes half the time can’t you wear each twice (maybe not small children who may spill stuff, but their clothes don’t take much washing space either).
  3. How does swimming daily away from home create washing? Surely it’s 2 cossies each worn alternately and no towels as you use the hotel ones. Or, if your own beach towels, one each regardless of how many days you swim?

Yes! Sometimes my luggage isn't touched for weeks, after I get back from holiday as there is SO much washing. Good too book self catering then I get it all done and clean before we leave. We do have 5 kids though.....

I think it also depends if you're back to work the day after holiday. I tend to be back as soon as we land. Then I try and WFH for a few days. Older teens are pretty good with helping and my mum wil collect some laundry and help put. We're quite an active family so lots of exercise on holiday so clothes do get dirty.

Why on earth did you take dirty clothes with you?
Also I’m sure you understand not everyone goes to France every holiday.
I can’t think of anything worse than doing chores on my holiday.

hockityponktas · 09/08/2024 10:57

We stay self catering abroad and it has a washing machine. It means we take half the amount of clothes away and washing mostly done and dried in the sun before we leave!
Only really have the last day outfits and towels to wash when we get home. Much easier to get it washed and dry in the sun than try to get it all dry in our unreliable weather!

Comedycook · 09/08/2024 10:59

The thought of doing laundry whilst on holiday makes me want to cry. I'd rather do huge amounts when I'm home than taint my precious holiday with household chores.

But only a suitcase each, presumably? I’m not sure where all the mountains of laundry are coming from - not just you, other posters too.

A suitcase each = 5 suitcases of dirty clothes (for my family). In my eyes, that’s a lot of washing to do in one go. In yours, it evidently isn’t and you have no idea why someone would have a minor whinge about having a lot of washing to do. We’re all different, after all 😊.

Obviously I don’t take dirty clothes with me. 🙄 We often stay a night or two on the way somewhere if we’re driving.
of course not everyone goes to France, we have had lots of very cheap gite holidays, much cheaper than hotels, but yes I do have to do some chores

I never really understood it but when we did our US road trips, usually 4+ weeks, we packed for 2 weeks and OH used to take great delight in finding the laundry in the hotel/motel, he looked on it as being his job. Once I get back into the habit of travelling now on my own I'll probably run out of pants at some stage!
