Yes but when you're at home, you don't go a whole week without putting a load of laundry on.

I do…and always have. One set a week. Maybe more than one load, but done as close as possible to the same time.
But anyway, you’ve had a week off washing, so still not an issue.

SoManyTshirts · 08/08/2024 19:10

Can’t get past 3 lots of bedding plus towels being one load a week. However, if you’re away for a week that’s one load you won’t need to do on your return, so you’ll have double the capacity straight away.

Washing stuff before you go is laundry that is dirty and would need washing anyway, nothing extra there.

ItsAlrightDarling · 08/08/2024 19:10

Maybe the OP should have put ‘lighthearted’ in the title 🙄

spanieleyes22 · 08/08/2024 19:30

Yes def lighthearted!! I guess we don't have enough clothes to pack - we wear them til
The last minute. I don't have enough clothes to pack for a week away. I would
Have nothing to wear this week iukwim. So I'm just washing everything and getting it dry. And trying to hide things so they don't get worn again before we go and come back into the laundry basket! Luckily it's supposed to be warm over the weekend. I can only have one load on the go as no space to get more dry and no tumble dryer . And then it's a lot of cotton stuff that needs ironing - I know but I can't wear crumpled linen and cotton I think it looks scruffy esp if we going away! No wash machine where we going so when we get back there will
Be the things in the basket that we wore the last few days we here plus the weeks holiday stuff? I don't understand how you all go away without extra laundry🤣I feel like a washer woman lol. Am doing all the beds too so they are fresh when we come back. Some holidays I've been up til 2 am washing last minute things and trying to dry them on the radiator🤣

No matter what we do, or how we plan it.. Everyone wants something washed the night before we go away. So they end up packing wet laundry unless some Mug waits up to take it out of the machine and then the dryer. Thinking of printing out flyers for this one.

Singleandproud · 08/08/2024 19:34

Packing cubes for holidays are brilliant but they come into their own for laundry on holiday.
You can pack the whites, darks and colours separately then just wash as you go when you get home without having to dig through the entire suitcases to find which ever set needs doing.

Clothes in the suitcase just get crumpled anyway, I'd pack them as is and iron them when you are there with a glass of sangria in had.

I do. Usually do it at weekends. 1 on sat, 1 on sun.

Roselilly36 · 08/08/2024 19:47

Much easier if you go away in summer as at least you can get it dry. We always tried to book accommodation with a washing machine so most garments came back clean.

Or not at all, which is my preferred method. People make work for themselves.

ViaRia01 · 08/08/2024 20:00

My trick is to designate a place for dirty laundry while on holiday (slung at the bottom of the wardrobe) and when packing to return I use one suitcase (or one half of a suitcase) for everyone’s dirty laundry.

Get home and, regardless of what time we arrive, I immediately sort it into piles. If it’s night time I don’t put the washing machine on (although i know many people would do) but it is very easy to crack on with it the next morning and can usually plough through most of it in one day

Bigearringsbigsmile · 08/08/2024 20:01

In our house, the week before you go away is called ' tramp week '. You only allowed to wear your oldest scruffiest clothes- definitely nothing that you want to take on holiday.
And the holiday clothes get washed if they need it and put straight into the suitcase.

For how many people. I do two loads of laundry most days ...

For how many people? I can’t imagine this.

I thought this was a generational thing. My mother is OBSESSED with laundry and what a nightmare it is. Laundry and ironing are the bane of her life. I don't seem to find either of those hard or time consuming, I honestly don't get it (and I'm 36!). Neither of those things takes me that long. Although my DH does plenty of it too so maybe your husband needs to do his share?

Apart from maybe towels and swimming costumes, why does a holiday make more washing than normal as surely you wear clothes at home too?

Do you have small children? I'm guessing op might.

I have to wash a lot when we get home from holiday too op. Usually 2 x loads when we get back at least, after a one week stay with no washing machine. Beaches make everything sandy and wet for a start, then suncream gets everywhere, ice lollies dropped down their fronts etc etc.

Bonkers then. There’s no way 4 people make 2 loads a day without you washing stuff needlessly. If you washed every item anyone touched it would be less than 1.

ItsAlrightDarling · 08/08/2024 20:54

I wonder if the people who don’t wash much don’t do much exercise? Or don’t sweat 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’ve got 2 sweaty gym kits and gym towels (mine and DH’s) a football kit (DD2) and a dance kit (DD1) just from today, plus my disabled child’s 3 changes of clothes.

Time40 · 08/08/2024 20:55

I never get this "going away creates so much washing" thing. Just don't wash things so often. I touch worn but not dirty clothing up with the iron to make it look fresh again ... great for suitcase-creased clothes.

That’s less than one load. Much less. I do a lot of exercise (x5 a week) and am only washing for one, but I do one load of clothes a week (and it’s usually not full - I could probs do another person’s too) and then whatever bedding and towels need doing.

Why would small children dirty more clothes on holiday?

I must live in a parallel universe because I never do as much washing as the typical MN'er.

Me & 2 DS's aged 20 & 17. Usually one load of lights & one load io darks a week. Towels & bedding separately but again probably just one load a week.

And I dont have any outside space to hang washing up on. No tumble drier either so washing dried on 2 airers within 24 hours.

Genuinely, how do you do just one load of bedding/towels a week? Do you mean you can fit everyone’s bedding into one load? (I wouldn’t be able to, maybe your machine is bigger?). Or do you alternate rather than changing all beds every week?

IdaClair · 08/08/2024 20:59

Five of us and there’s no way of getting washing below ten loads a week.

No little kids, worse, big ones and teens. Their clothes are a lot larger!

It might be relevant here for everyone to remember that washing machines have different capacities.

We don’t wash everything every time we use it but no one here can manage to get their personal lau ndry under two loads each a week. With all the beds, covers, throws, pet stuff, towels and cleaning cloths. There’s all the swimming gear, sports kits, uniforms, football gear covered in mud, running kits, climbing gear covered in chalk. I think it’s going to have to be reasonable to wash your sports gear after each use and that’s 15 full sports kits a week for a family of 5 assuming a medium amount of exercise. We have five double or king sized beds . The list goes on.

HuggingAnIcePack887 · 08/08/2024 21:00

Reading the thread, I think maybe you need a dryer. I have one but I'm aware many British people don't. You can't put nice stuff in it but kids' clothes, gyms stuff, towels, underwear etc and it does take away a lot of the work.

I didn’t say I do more than one load a day, that was another poster. On top of that I also had mine and DH’s work clothes from today, so one full load. Same most days, except at the weekends when I do more because I also have 5 lots of bedding and towels. Yeah of course if there was just me I’d do less washing, but there’s 5 of us.
