To feel guilty about ordering from Amazon three times in a week

I just ordered something now I want something else. Not expensive stuff. But I think somebody has to deliver that and I should have done them all together, I've got Prime. It's an extravagance but quite handy. I haven't done my third order yet because of guilt!

Today , I ordered
New blades for my cricut machine
A wig for a fancy dress costume
Neither items are available in my town. In fact, unless you want lovely arty farty stuff, there is not a lot to buy in my town. This is the reason I have Amazon Prime. I also like the free music and books too but that isn't relevant to this thread 😁

And on another thread, people are moaning about the state of John Lewis and how far it's gone downhill.

Actions have consequences. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than buy from Amazon. They don't pay tax. They treat their staff like shite. The boss is a megalomaniac. I think those 3 things are reason enough not to buy from them.

Most of the stuff they sell is absolute crap. It's consumerism on steroids.

It’s not crap
i buy nice brand dog food, shampoo etc
you just need to not buy crappy fake/unnecessary stuff on there

I can’t stand John Lewis. Don’t trust them at all. A few years ago they delivered me a faulty washing machine and tried to make me wait 3 weeks for an engineer to verify this. Never bought an appliance from them since and avoid them unless necessary. 30 years ago, their customer service was second to none. In the past 10 ish years, they have been utterly shit. Not just with the above incident, but I had a broken item that I wanted a replacement part for. I knew it was out of warranty and was happy to pay for it. Passed around loads of people on the phone, they wouldn’t help - only wanted to know if it was under warranty. It was an own brand item which had to go in the bin and be replaced, because they wouldn’t help me.

Some of you self-described nosy people might like this podcast! It's called 'my mate bought a toaster' and they interview celebrities etc by going through their Amazon purchase history

Please tell me what I can reduce/reuse/recycle to get the meds for my dog that I get from Amazon?

Dogs are terrible for the environment too, as it happens.

Not mine. She never gets a plane anywhere.

Last few things I bought on Amazon were:
whiteboard organiser (local Range didn’t have anything suitable)
bookclub book (didn’t have it in Waterstones)
toilet roll (subscribe and save)
dishwasher rinse aid (subscribe and save)
Birthday presents for my twin nieces sent wrapped directly to their house
Keyboard for my laptop (old one was sticking and getting on my tits)

that was over the past month.
I usually place and order or two a week and don’t feel remotely bad about it tbh.

Lovingsummers · 08/08/2024 23:08

For those wondering what people buy, this week I have ordered:

Medicine, because I'm sick and don't want to go out.
Covid/flu tests. Same reason.
Vitamins.
A book for my mother for Christmas (I do that as I go).
A book my daughter wanted.
Filter cartridges for my dog water fountain.

The main thing for me is I can't always spare the time to go and get things in person, so I order.

Sarahzb · 08/08/2024 23:14

I get my parcels delivered to the local shop.
The Amazon person will be going there anyway, it won't get stolen if it were to be left outside my house and the lovely family that run the shop get some income

CranfordScones · 08/08/2024 23:33

It's not a company I'd want to support.

I rarely use them for that reason.

caringcarer · 08/08/2024 23:57

In December I get several deliveries some days. My son is at work so also gets his parcels delivered to my home too. I do sometimes wonder if the delivery driver thinks I'm greedy ordering so many things.

This thread blows my mind. What are people buying that regularly requires multiple orders a week?!?

@goodkidsmaadhouse

Yesterday I ordered

blood glucose test strips (joys of being diabetic)

a pair of blue tooth ear phones that hook over your ear (in the hope I'll be able to take calls, listen to podcasts while out walking & not inflict that on anyone else, nor turn the sound on/off constantly. My ears are too small for apple earphones. (They have to use baby things when I get my ears tested). On special at £20 instead of £80

a second cable for my newish phone which is a usbC to usbc (unlike everything else I own) & one cable is too risky. Thought I'd lost it the other day when out (took it because I needed the battery recharged when out).

Door samples for new kitchen.

Tuesday: salt for the water softener.
(can only order online)

Monday: Autoglym interior car stuff.

...and on it goes. I couldn't get any of that in the village, so I'd have had to go into town & probably could have got most of it. Better to order from Amazon & it be delivered along with parcels for half the street.

Don’t moan about the country turning to shit and then spend all your money at the likes of Amazon.

companies swerving tax by clever accounting and paying their staff poorly so they need benefit top ups is a big issue. Anyone buying from Amazon is part of the problem.

Prime exists so they can collect data, undercut other shops, sell at a loss to gain customers and eventually kill the competition.

I’d rather support small businesses trying to make a living. There’s very little decent stuff on Amazon you can’t find elsewhere if you’re prepared to look.

Goodness you must be avoiding a shit ton of companies

I feel like one of the few people who never use Amazon anymore.

Eons ago when the internet was young and Amazon just sold CDs and books I was an enthusiastic adopter. I was thrilled to be able to order loads of CDs that would take me ages to find and have them delivered straight to my door.

After a few months I noticed I was getting to the end of the month with less and less money, looking at my bank acocunt I saw those odd fivers here and there on Amazon every few days were really adding up The ease of ordering and lack of spending friction meant I was spending far more than I realised.

Concerned, I cancelled my accout and have never gone back.

That is my boring "why I don't use Amazon story".

Scarletrunner · 09/08/2024 09:39

Seeing those lists - Amazon is obviously vital to your existence here on this planet 😂

Peonies12 · 09/08/2024 09:43

What can you possibly be buying? I probably order from Amazon a few times a year max. Maybe consider saving your money and the planet, your home must be full of unnecessary stuff. Amazon treat their employees terribly as well.

Mespher · 09/08/2024 09:57

Today I ordered, Piriteze, shower gel, chocolate, all normal household stuff but cheaper than the shops.

Custardandrhubarbcrumble · 09/08/2024 10:04

In the past week I've ordered toys, books, clothes and shoes for my son's birthday. Many of them would have taken hours looking round the shops to try to find and some just wouldn't have been available. My daughter went in Waterstones and saw a book for £40 which I bought for £20 on Amazon.
When do go in real shops I often check the price of something on Amazon and find it's cheaper so get it from there instead.
It's super convenient and the vans are up our road every day anyway so I don't feel guilty.

We also get toiletries and cleaning products on subscribe and save, and recently bought things like UK sticker headlight deflectors and hi vis jackets for our holiday much cheaper than in the ferry port.
