To feel guilty about ordering from Amazon three times in a week

I just ordered something now I want something else. Not expensive stuff. But I think somebody has to deliver that and I should have done them all together, I've got Prime. It's an extravagance but quite handy. I haven't done my third order yet because of guilt!

I only use Amazon when it's way cheaper than in town. My neighbour has an addiction to Amazon, I think the deliveries fills up an existantial void inside her. Before ordering or buying something I always ask myself if it's necessary (unless it's a gift), mostly it's a yes because I don't get kicks out of shopping.

Buying from Amazon means the profit from the sale goes to a multibillion $ company in the US.
Ok the people on min wage in warehouse get paid and the driver(prob also on min wage) earns a bit. But the bulk of the money goes to the Chinese manufacturer and Amazon.
But this does not compare to a British company selling you the product and paying tax here.
So if there’s no money for the NHS, housing etc etc etc this is why.

Well if the shops near me sold what I need I would buy it there. Can't buy so many things since Wilko went, and that was as a result of nefarious activities by a British corporation. Thousands redundant, some after 40 years, yet no one ever goes after the Wilkinson family do they?

Raspberrymoon49 · 08/08/2024 20:24

Amazon are an appalling bullying employer and don’t get me started on their impact on environment etc, boycotted them a long time ago and am at peace with that

Missmarple87 · 08/08/2024 20:27

You can literally just think of something you need and 30 seconds later you've ordered it to arrive at your house the next day. It is an absolute marvel of modernity and something we could only have dreamed of in the 1990s.

The alternative for most people would be getting in the car and travelling to the nearest out of town superstore.

Yes, there are huge issues with taxes and employee conditions but those need to be resolved by government policy. Hopefully the current government will have the backbone to do so.

IcecreamWhatSandwich · 08/08/2024 20:33

I set up 'Amazon day' delivery, where all orders in the same week come on one day. However, half the stuff doesn't have that as an option. Then the rest still comes in several deliveries and/or in several separate boxes, all on the same day. Or it gets delayed and doesn't end up coming on that day anyway. It seems it's just a gimmick so Amazon can claim they have more sustainable options available.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/08/2024 20:35

I'm sorry to say I think that you are solely to blame for climate change with your wanton ordering.

You should wear sack cloth and ashes for 40 days. (Amazon sell both these items at quite competitive prices, although please note that they may arrive in separate deliveries)

hairbearbunches · 08/08/2024 20:39

And on another thread, people are moaning about the state of John Lewis and how far it's gone downhill.

Actions have consequences. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than buy from Amazon. They don't pay tax. They treat their staff like shite. The boss is a megalomaniac. I think those 3 things are reason enough not to buy from them.

Most of the stuff they sell is absolute crap. It's consumerism on steroids.

Viviennemary · 08/08/2024 20:41

I know there are issues with Amazon. But where do you get next day delivery and free postage. For as many orders as you like. Even m&S you have to pay for postage unless you spend and think £50 and takes a few days. Amazon is great for books and toys and they now sell quite a lot of toiletries. I don't overspend on it but I can see it would be easy to do this.

I know. That's why I was on a guilt trip this morning!

I get a lot of household brands, the same as buying in shops but often cheaper if on a deal or bulk buy so how can it be crap if it's the same branded item.

hairbearbunches · 08/08/2024 20:56

@Mespher they sell all sorts and a lot of it is utter shit from China.

When you buy from Amazon and not from shops, you're contributing to the decline of the high street. Once Bezos has everything, then you'll see the prices shoot up because he won't have any competition.

John Lewis can't keep up with the unlevel playing field that is online selling. I'd have John Lewis over Amazon any day of the week, but one of them is winning the war and it's not JL.

mitogoshi · 08/08/2024 20:57

I don't have prime so I get them sent to the lockers, very handy and they deliver multiple packages at once so more environmentally friendly

goodkidsmaadhouse · 08/08/2024 18:41

This thread blows my mind. What are people buying that regularly requires multiple orders a week?!?

in the last two weeks I’ve ordered:

Mould remover and grout and tile cleaner,
hob cleaner,
100 batteries for £12.99 when a pack of 12 Duracell in the supermarket are the same price,
An eyebrow pencil I couldn’t find anywhere else,
Set of knives that match the rest of my kitchen that I could only find on amazon.
A flea collar and cat nip for the cat,
Set of floor mats for DP’s new car - only on Amazon as the trim matched the colour of the car,
Phone case and screen and camera lens protector,
Some “bin buddy” bin freshener as cat has 3 food pouches a day and we only need to empty the 75litre bin every few days, without the bin buddy it stinks. I couldn’t see the scent we wanted anywhere else.
a case of wine for a birthday present - cheaper then buying in supermarket and didn’t have to sign up for subscription.
Apple Watch screen protector- had gems round it, couldn’t find anywhere else.
Shower caddy with suction cups to keep all bath products tidy. It’s surprisingly stuck firmly and has a lot on it!
Marble pestle and mortar- £35 in a local shop, £12.99 in the sale on amazon.
Heated LED eye mask as have blepharitis and it helps,
Pair of “petite” combat style trousers that fit perfectly and that’s a miracle as I’m only 4’11
And finally a hanging ceramic plant pot for “string of hearts” plant as I couldn’t find one anywhere else.

Its obviously not stuff we buy every week but some items are on “subscribe and save” like batteries, mould remover, bin buddy, hob cleaner, razor blades, toothbrush heads, psoriasis treatment etc… that saves 15% on it all.

I have a disability so it’s easier to get stuff delivered and if I ordered it all separately from other online stores I’d be paying delivery and with things like the wine we didn’t realise we’d be seeing our friend as she doesn’t live locally so it was handy having next day delivery. We got 6 bottles of decent wine for £30 which would have been double in a supermarket.

I try to avoid unnecessary spending as I can’t really afford it, the shower caddy was because mould was building up from having shampoo and other bath stuff on the side of the bath, it’s all tidy and organised now.
DP wanted a pestle and mortar for ages to make Persian dishes but they were really expensive for a decent one till we found the one in the sale.
The knives were because we had some with wooden handles that had gone funny and we wanted a knife rack and for them to match.

The trousers are my 3rd pair in a year because normal petite size is 5’4 and under. When you are 4’11 that’s still enormous and I have to have trousers altered. When I found a pair that fits it was like a miracle!

I have to admit that the Amazon delivery driver said jokingly (I hope!) that he delivers to my address so often that people have been questioning the nature of our relationship 😂.

RobinEllacotStrike · 08/08/2024 19:04

The more important question is what did you order?

I'm nosy

My last few items ordered:

Phone chargers
Phone chargers (wrong ones)
Foldable coffee dripping things with paper filters.
The Diary of Frida Karlo an Intimate Self Portrait
Electric air pump - USB charged
Eye drops

i must be nosy as well because I wanted to know.

I’m appreciating all the people listing their purchases!

I’ve never understood these “haul videos” online, now I’m wondering if an amazon haul video might be quite interesting 😂.

CharlotteLucas3 · 08/08/2024 21:05

It’s also (reasonably) good for presents (although they sell a lot of tat) because you can send stuff to any address and it’s good if you have a child at uni because you can send stuff straight there. I also like the fact that they always leave your parcel even if you’re not in and you can track your delivery.

I do feel guilty but not guilty enough to cause myself a huge amount of inconvenience. My small town is full of cafes, charity shops and gift shops, which I do use but there are lots of things I can’t get. We don’t even have a big supermarket for basic clothing.

BashfulClam · 08/08/2024 21:10

I’m going on holiday and ordered a travel mirror as hotel mirrors are mostly shut. Haven’t seen them in shops anywhere. Also got some little lock things for zips to help deter pickpockets as we are going to a European city infamous for thefts from tourists.

CharlotteLucas3 · 08/08/2024 21:12

Shampoo
Soap
Athletes foot cream
Collapsible traffic cones
Pyjamas for DS
Four Waterman fountain pens in pastel colours
Gabor Mate book (very depressing - don’t recommend!)
Dog food
Thai red curry paste
A fancy diary/planner

For the nosy people 🙂

Evidence of this please?

A quick Google brings up quite a lot of articles.

I’m away camping and have even used prime here! We forgot swimming goggles and discovered our electric pump broke. Both times next day delivery to a locker less than a mile away.

marshlellow · 08/08/2024 21:18

Himawarigirl · 08/08/2024 10:21

Unless you need the items immediately you can select ‘Amazon day delivery’ and they keep the items across a week for you and bring them together, or twice a week if that’s what you prefer. And you can set your ‘Amazon day’.

Genius

Mespher · 08/08/2024 21:21

I had to order a new caravan water pump when ours broke on holiday, it was delivered to the local post office pick up point the next day, it would have been difficult to get the exact one we wanted otherwise.

Livelovebehappy · 08/08/2024 21:35

Amazon are great. They deliver when they say they do. Hate Evrie with a passion - it’s 50/50 whether you get your order. It either goes to a wrong address or disappears into a black hole. I can only think companies use them because they’re cheap, because it’s definitely not because of their efficiency or customer services.

Not all of us live near a branch of John Lewis 🙄

vanana · 08/08/2024 21:41

Just crack on and order whatever you want. If Amazon have an overall problem with too many people doing it, they can put the price of prime up.

I buy almost exclusively on Amazon. Easy for orders to mount up. Recent orders:

dog food
text books
eye drops
school clothing
shampoo and conditioner
labels
cleaning stuff
barbies as a present for DN, delivered to their house
bin bags that actually fit my bin
Amazon voucher as a present
phone case
hooks

IMO most of this is just basic family stuff

changedusernameforthis1 · 08/08/2024 21:43

Last Christmas I ordered quite a lot of parcels the week before Christmas and it got delivered the same day. The poor delivery guy had to go back and forth to his van for so many parcels (we don't live on a road, it's up a path by a park so not easily accessible) and when he delivered the last lot I said how sorry I was, and he just replied "No reason to be sorry, I wouldn't have a job if people didn't order things!"

I think sometimes we just do feel bad though. I find myself apologising to taxi drivers for long journeys, and to people at the till when I have a full trolley 😅
