To think these riots are about anti-muslim feeling more than immigration....

SaltAndVinegar2 · 08/08/2024 00:08

...and to wonder what the rioters actually think the solution is?

I mean there are plenty of Christian immigrants and no-one is attacking churches. Inner city churches are often mostly made up of ethnic minority and immigrant people

Just watched Ed Balls interview with Zarah Sultana.
ZS: "it's important to call out these riots for being islamophobic because mosques and muslims are being targetted"
EB: "do you agree we need to control immigration"
followed by constant interruption and not allowing her to actually say anything. He came across terribly. There have been 8000 complaints about this interview!

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/ed-balls-gmb-zarah-sultana-riots-b2591311.html

These rioters want to get rid of muslims whether British or immigrant - that is the unpalatable truth. It's not about immigrants in general at all, and only partly about the ones in the hotels. It's scarily reminiscent of what I've read about the early days of the 1930s in germany before Hitler came to power.

GMB viewers criticise Ed Balls for ‘callous’ Zarah Sultana interview

Balls has been branded ‘incredibly patronising’ for his ‘reckless’ interview method

If this thread is anything to go by, they are far from "back in their box". It's a disgrace.

Yeah. They are off our streets for now, but not yet off our sites.

@OneBadKitty you might want to look at the magdalene laundries and the mother and baby homes for evil that was done in the name of Christianity.

bfsham · 08/08/2024 10:48

I do think this fact about British Jews is very overlooked.

Also, Islam /muslim is a religion not a race/ethnic background. Too many posters on this thread are conflating the two.

I was having a break from all social media and was happy but some bad demon made me look here today.

I have no doubts there is specific prejudice against "Asians" i.e. Pakistani Muslims. Hindu, Sikhs etc. sometimes are getting caught in it as well. However, trying to "equalise" it with antisemitism is bonkers.

Hijabs are definitely a cultural practice. In most countries where islam is a majority religion hijabs are not obligatory.
I do not have a stake, and I don't know what is the solution, but....

Some of my family is muslim, they are practicing very niche school. They are minority whenever they go. They don't do hijabs and are worried when they see converts in their mosque covered. They are afraid of being dominated. For most people here they are probably raging racists. There is a long history of prosecution and discrimination though, so I guess being afraid that you will be pushed out of own space is legit.

Also, for those who never heard this narrative about other groups.
Farage, before he went for Pakistani Muslims, was hunting down "Eastern Europeans". He was disgusted by a thought that Romanian family might live next to him. Although, he seemed to be open for Pakistani and Indian migrants as they were the symbol of the past glory. He got rid of barbarians from the Eastern Europe, so he needed another group. It seems that now it's "brown muslims", we will see who next.

That's terrible. Were they seriously injured? They must have been if he had a chainsaw. I didn't realise there had been deaths. The riots in London have been in very small number and little damage done. The counter protestors have far outnumbered the rioters who seem to be dealt with pretty firmly by the police. Or am I missing something? I do hope the police continue with this zero tolerance approach, especially in areas where knife crime is rampant.

@winterrabbit you are missing something - the fact that you are fooling no-one.

We see you.

CassieMaddox · 08/08/2024 14:33

Quite. It would be nice to be able to visually stand up on line like the British did against the rioters last night, and make it clear certain views are very very much in the minority.

Anyway, maybe people can watch this

Muslims in general or just a few? Do you lump every one together?

A lot of Muslims in France have an issue with France being a secular country.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 08/08/2024 08:28

That’s a choice of how the news is framed. Again, it’s a “white people” choice.

Thousands of muslim children have been murdered in Gaza recently. Thousands. And this by a nation state funded and given those weapons in part by the United Kingdom.

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr , that is first class whataboutery! Bravo. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I'm starting to think that a lot of these recent threads are disingenuous... It's almost as if they're designed to stoke up further division. The same arguments whirling round and round, over and over.

I agree. But that's hardly surprising, as it’s happening all over social media right now.

Accusations of phobia are also easy to use as an excuse for those who'd rather silence women and girls who have genuine concern about attitudes to women.

The concern with ALL of the major religions is how open to interpretation their teachings are.

And btw 'dumb' is considered an ableist slur.

I shall no longer use the term, I was not aware and apologise.

These stupid thuggish protestors have no interest or concerns about woman and girls being silenced they just hate brown people

Knowledge is to be used in discussions around religion without it leading to insults. That never ever happens when discussing Islam hence the comment you just made about silencing

mids2019 · 08/08/2024 15:10

My daughter cannot where a crucifix at school because it contravenes uniform regulations.

However Muslims where the hijab.

Can't we have a simple no religious symobism rule in appropriate schools. Simples.

Queue 'uman rights breach' responses.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 08/08/2024 15:10

They're just a bunch of uneducated racists. They have no idea who they're targeting, they don't care. They could be 2nd/3rd generation, born and bred in Great Britain or married to a Brit and have every right to be here. Funny how they aren't targeting all those white immigrants though.

I saw something on my old university Instagram story yesterday advising Muslim women who wear the hijab to wear magnet pins for their own safety. What a sad state of affairs.

Drogdab · 08/08/2024 15:16

Er Polish people have had yrs of abuse.

Can someone give me some concrete examples of Islamaphobia? I must be blind and admittedly live in central London in a borough where immigrants outnumber White British but I am not seeing it. I see most people bending over backwards to accommodate everyone of all religions and nationalities. I do see a tonne of anti-semitism and am genuinely concerned at how my Jewish friends must be feeling.

How about attacking a mosque at the first hint that a person was brown, an immigrant and therefore must be muslim.
