WHAT IS THEIR MALFUNCTION

OP posts:
Allfur · 06/08/2024 17:30

They're just massive wankers

FionnulaTheCooler · 06/08/2024 17:30

Main character syndrome, they think they are the only one whose feelings count and everyone else is just a background feature.

corlan · 06/08/2024 17:31

Selfish and stupid - the classic double

PrayForMyBum · 06/08/2024 17:34

Incontrovertible twattism

PangolinPan · 06/08/2024 17:36

They literally could not give a shit about anyone else and it wouldn't occur to them to do so.

I feel very old fashioned, expecting my children to be considerate of others in a public place, or even at home for that matter.

Deeply uncool these days.

Lampzade · 06/08/2024 17:36

What about the ones who have detailed conversations about their private lives on their mobiles?

Chypre · 06/08/2024 17:36

Music and movies that's plain stupidity and being inconsiderate. Having full-blown conversations on a loud speaker in public, so EVERYONE would hear all the details - that's actual offence I think...

Exactly this

Yes. I agree. The default now is what people want to do and fuck everyone else

TomatoSandwiches · 06/08/2024 17:40

Socially inept, dragged up plebs.

RonObvious · 06/08/2024 17:41

There were a couple of guys watching a video on their phone at a restaurant I was at the other day. At some point, there was swearing in the video, and I saw a couple of young kids at the next table (who had been beautifully behaved) turn around and look at them. It amused me, as it was the exact opposite of the situation I see complained about on here!

Lastarse · 06/08/2024 17:43

A mum and her (disinterested) daughter watching an entire Disney series on full blast via laptop on 2.5hr flight beside me. I have since bought noise cancelling headphones.

tobee · 06/08/2024 17:43

It's very much on the rise isn't it? 🙄

I was paying at the self service till in a supermarket the other day, guy next to me phone started ringing with a loud tone. At least I thought! No, he was just playing music on his phone at full volume as you would if listening on headphones. For everyone to enjoy 🙄🙄. I gave him a look but he was big and tall and so I looked away quickly.

Surely it's time to make this socially unacceptable like it is for plenty of other things? You can't drink out and about in plenty of places, on tubes etc so why not this?

It's always shite music too!

Twistybranch · 06/08/2024 17:46

To some people it isn’t a sign of disrespect or being rude, it’s how they communicate.

We have a large and diverse student population where we live and talking loudly on speaker phone or playing music isn’t meant to antagonise or upset. They wouldn’t care if others were loud either.

The problem is where you have some people that believe it is respectful in a public place to be quiet and conscious of those around you and others that are relaxed in public and are happy for others to be too. It’s a culture clash.

No one calls them out (hardly anyone) so they assume people are impressed/fine with it. But everyone doesn't think they're cool but knob heads.

What about the ones who have detailed conversations about their private lives on their mobiles?

The British used to have the reputation of being very reserved. With the arrival of mobile phones many of them abandoned that reserve overnight. Quite remarkable, really. Do they not grasp that the rest of us can hear every detail of the conversation, or do they not care? Confidentiality seems to count for nothing.

It's not really a culture clash. That's just excusing it. It's ignorance and low level bullying

It's a shame that the adjective considerate doesn't apply.

Beth216 · 06/08/2024 17:51

The culture of selfish arseholes.

Fortyshadesofgreen345 · 06/08/2024 17:53

Can I add to that builders who put music on massively loudly all day, particularly when it’s sunny and you want to be in the garden but anytime really, particularly on a terraced street where one in two people are working from home.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 06/08/2024 17:57

Thoughtlessness at best, selfishness at worse.

Twistybranch · 06/08/2024 17:58

Where I am it’s a culture clash, but that doesn’t mean those that are talking loudly or playing music mean to upset people.
The reality is most people won’t say anything, so those on the phones have little idea that it’s upsetting.
Our student population where I live, many come from countries that don’t expect silence in public, on buses, waiting in queues.
No one is in the right or wrong, but I think it helps to understand it doesn't always come from a disrespectful place.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 06/08/2024 18:00

I don't believe there are cultures where considerate people think everyone else wants to listen to their choice of music from a tinny phone speaker. Every culture has selfish arseholes, however.

Fluffygoon · 06/08/2024 18:05

Just don’t get it - woman on a packed train out of London one Friday evening conducting a Teams call very loudly with her staff; quite sensitive information being discussed. Why?? Everyone just looked at her.

Twistybranch · 06/08/2024 18:06

Britain is known for how quiet and somewhat unfriendly we are in public . Not all countries are like that, it would be pretty weird if it was.

Japan is completely different again in terms behaviour in public.

Every country is different, our attitude I would say is perhaps a bit too reserved in public. How many threads have been on this site about kids in restaurants or those with SN. The public has a pretty low tolerance for noise. It isn’t always helpful.
