Phrases you hate

Mine is ‘buttery soft’…If you haven’t come across this phrase, it is mainly used when describing leggings or other clothes, but now I’ve even seen it being used to describe gold jewellery! Also butter isn't that soft…Margariney soft doesn’t have the same ring to it I suppose.. Anyone else?

For example an empire biscuit or bit of tipsy Cake..both funcy pieces.

RaraRachael · 04/09/2024 10:53

Where I am in NE Scotland it would be a "bit of stuff" for a fancy woman
Further round the coast would be a "funcy piece" and Santa would be "Sunty" but we're more refined 😂

I could never understand the Glasgow "jeely piece" thing

Thevelvelletes · 04/09/2024 16:21

As I said up thread bit o fluff
The one I hate is ..is that your hairy.
That's from decades ago but I always detested it

MidwichCuckoo · 04/09/2024 16:29

I don't like it when people are deciding where to go on holiday and they say "I've DONE Cornwall, I've DONE Thailand, I've DONE Spain" etc. As if it's a tick box boasting thing and not worth seeing any more of those places, as it wouldn't add to the list of places they can say they've been to.

My granny referred to her brother's second wife as his 'fancy piece'. So tea and a fancy piece in Dublin would be quite a different experience @RaraRachael 😀

May I add 'pussybow blouse' to the list? Not the top itself, just the name.

Please do and while you are there, add "kitten heels" and "baby doll nightie" too.

"thrown" or "chucked" in relation to food prep, e.g. "just throw in a packet of prawns"

Sounds stupid, and also in a different way, reminiscent of throwing up

My baby daddy. 🤢

My baby daddy. 🤢

“Baby father” I have also heard, equally as 🤢

DH was once on jury duty, and a QC had to explain the term ‘baby daddy’ to a very patrician elderly judge, while the entire courtroom tried to keep a straight face.

At a young age.

Nope. Early age. How can an age be young? Only recently became a fashionable age to be? Like nails on a chalkboard that phrase is to me.

SinnerBoy · 05/09/2024 20:35

"Him baby daddy..."

FFS!

RaraRachael · 05/09/2024 21:14

From the get go

Vibe - An "influencer" said her child's TA had such a vibe about her. What a total load of shite

Coughsweet · 05/09/2024 21:42

Am sure am repeating self now but “pure cotton” and “pure wool” irritate me - although even I think IABU 😁

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 05/09/2024 23:10

When someone puts something on Twitter like...

"Name me a better songwriter than Taylor Swift....

I'll wait."

OR

On a message board like this...

"Things you can do when you're snowed in....

Annnnnd GO!"

Or the ever annoying

"DISCUSS!"

🙄

ALL of this. 😂

When I worked in a department store, a million years ago, a lady came to the counter (I worked in 'ladies wear') and asked 'do you do a flesh tone tight?'. It has stuck with me all these years.

Oh that reminds me, "snowed in". It used to mean the snow was higher than the doors/windows, so you were actually trapped inside. Now it's used by over dramatic twats because there is a light dusting over their pathway and they can't contemplate driving in it.🙄

sammylady37 · 07/09/2024 10:23

I’m pretty sure I’ve already posted here about phrases like ‘a red lip’, ‘a flat sandal’, ‘a wide-leg trouser’ etc but last night I watched a video which contained the abomination ‘a denim dungaree’ - WTAF??? I’ve resolved to never buy from that shop as a protest!

TheAverageJoanne · 07/09/2024 20:10

Ewwwww!

It sounds so childish.

MillshakePickle · 07/09/2024 20:28

It's giving (insert word) vibes...

Vibing...

Living your/my/their best life

Jarring...

Let's feed that forward

Bickies, no, it's biscuits or cookies

Foodie

Too right...

Thevelvelletes · 07/09/2024 20:30

What's jarring? Not heard that before.
