Phrases you hate

Mine is ‘buttery soft’…If you haven’t come across this phrase, it is mainly used when describing leggings or other clothes, but now I’ve even seen it being used to describe gold jewellery! Also butter isn't that soft…Margariney soft doesn’t have the same ring to it I suppose.. Anyone else?

I hate ‘grandkids’, which is utterly illogical, since I say ‘kids’ all the time!
But mine are grandchildren.

Sentence that starts or ends with "to be fair" drives me insane 😩

And 'to be honest' creeps in an awful lot.

kennycat · 10/08/2024 09:34

hubby
kids
my babies (when you mean your children)
holibobs
biccies
avo (avocado)
mash potato (it’s either mashed potato or just mash)

I could go on; I’m very easily annoyed by language.

and people who say pronOUnciation rather than pronunciation. Yeeeee gods. My husband does it and it’s almost led to divorce a few times. The barbarian.

HRTQueen · 10/08/2024 09:44

My house my rules

its a home not a prison ffs if you don’t wear shoes in the house just ask people to take them off or you always eat dinner at the table just say this not going into some speech about rules

pictoosh · 10/08/2024 10:11

Sugar daddy.

Ugh - makes my skin crawl.

KimberleyClark · 10/08/2024 10:13

Diarise, as in put something in the diary.

KimberleyClark · 10/08/2024 10:14

And “deep dive” as in looking into something in detail.

I hate saying "super" to describe something eg "super tired" or "super close"

Can I say my babies when I talk about my cats?🤣

People saying they 'have mental health' or 'suffer from mental health'.

That was going to be mine 😬
I can't cope with the fact there's an entire word missing and people don't notice!!!

Pussycat22 · 10/08/2024 10:28

Affect and effect used in wrong context.

SweetAmber · 10/08/2024 10:35

Frocks and slacks .

If only they were ever learned on these threads.

tiger2691 · 10/08/2024 10:45

On point

beautifuldaytosavelives · 10/08/2024 10:50

I can’t believe I was so slow with ‘to be fair’!

LadyGrinningSoul8517 · 10/08/2024 10:57

Not read thread so not sure if these have been said but..

"Furbaby/babies"
"Dogmum/dad or Catmum/dad"
Speaking as if you're your dog and saying things like "My mum took me for a walk today".
Announcing a pregnancy with anything along the lines of pets with a baby vest that states "My siblings have paws!" or similar.

Basically, anything that implies pets are children and you're their parents/siblings.

No, just no.

No, just no.

Same goes for small humans.

Coughsweet · 10/08/2024 11:13

@WickieRoy thanks. I’ve seen Scottish posters say it before too and am curious. I’m Scottish, lived here most of my life and am not young but the only Scottish people I’ve ever heard directly using it are the TikTok obsessed youth in my house and I know they’ve absorbed it from TV/SM. I’m not accusing posters of making it up, there are big differences all over the country and I am wondering where “gotten” is commonly used.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/08/2024 11:17

’Myself and dh/whoever….’ at the start of a post.

Dear poster, please just write, ‘Dh and I…’

WhatASmashingBlouseYouHaveOn · 10/08/2024 12:43

Get in the bin

Shut the front door

Living my best life

knocked it out the park

Smashed it

We've got you..(.we've got me what? )

He done amazing (football pundit speak)

Doodlesplodge17 · 10/08/2024 12:56

“It is what it is”
hear that all day everyday at work 😫

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/08/2024 13:01

A word, not a phrase, but ‘brekkie’ - which I’ve just seen elsewhere.
FiL used to say ‘brekker’ which is even worse.
