Glitter should be banned

willywallaby · 05/08/2024 19:56

Apparently it was banned in the EU last year! Not for the first time I'm wishing we still followed their rules, and we should follow suit now. We never buy glitter or items with glitter on but somehow it makes its way into our house anyway. If we get something like a card with a glittery front my heart sinks. In DD's bag of crafts from the school year that she brought home, there's an egg box decorated with glitter that already covered all the other crafts and I've left the egg box in the bag for now because I dare not bring it out! A few weeks ago DD found a little packet of glitter in a craft kit that we didn't know was there, and she emptied it all over the carpet and into her art box. It was hard enough clearing it out of the carpet and we're still finding it everywhere and cleaning out the art box will be so difficult we haven't even started yet. And it's all just bloody microplastics! The existence of glitter does no good for anyone.

I can't understand how a bereavement no matter how tragic and sad excuses anti social behaviour. Surely a young person would want a more environmentally friendly memorial. Who'd want to be remembered by farm animals choking. Balloon releases are just selfish littering. No different to throwing a packet of crisps on the floor. It's a totally unnecessary way of marking a loss.

We will never know what they wanted, as they were only an infant upon passing.

Your ignorant comments will not change my mind.

It makes me sad that there are people with such disregard for the environment and nature.Sure, each person has only a small part to play but collectively we can make a difference. Nobody needs plastic glitter on their cards, skin or anything else. I don’t want to eat foods containing plastic, Not using glitter is a small thing we can all do to work towards a less polluted world.

Biodegradable glitter is very widely available. It’s not a case of pollute the environment or nothing.

There's a conspiracy that the worlds biggest manufacturer of glitter won't disclose who their largest buyer is and it's all very hush hush

Well, it's Santa - everyone knows that.

@Hobbesmanc Is not being the ignorant one, that would be you. How is polluting the environment and killing animals a nice way to remember a baby? So many less damaging and far more meaningful things that you could do. I’m sorry for your loss but balloon releases are shameful.

Are we going to rid ourselves of polyester clothing, too? I have, but I'm not losing sleep over a glittery card.
Glitter is not my style, but we have far bigger pollutants.

We should. But of course we can’t at the moment as no effort was made by governments to invest in research for an eco friendly substitute for the polyester fabric.

Or better yet we could all stop buying (+ manufacturing) rubbish and go back to natural materials like cotton, wool, linen etc

Completely agree with you. I am trying to avoid any polyester, acrilic clothes. Try to buy mostly second hand wooden toys for DC. The only issues are sports/gym clothes for me, there’s no way to avoid synthetic fabrics in these sort of clothes at the moment.

Oh I don’t feel any shame when we do them. I’m proud. Nothing will change that.

Increase awareness of biodegradable glitter, instead of trying to ban all things fun, and sparkly!

ALittleAlarmed · 06/08/2024 12:46

Glitter police, please see above. It isn't an either or. Life needs some sparkle!

I bloody hate the stuff! Gets everywhere and damn near impossible to clear it up properly. It's top of my list of hated substances, along with sand, those polystyrene balls used for packaging and pine needles from Christmas trees.

Amongst crafters, glitter is known as craft herpes - because once you have it, you can never get rid of it.

We have an idiot friend who gave me a Xmas party invitation when she saw me in the street going to nursery with two small children. I allowed the smallest one to open the envelope on the bus.
The fucking thing was filled with glitter which, due to the cack handed lack of dexterity of a toddler, exploded everywhere.
As it was height of summer both children were recently slathered in factor 50 and were extremely sticky so it basically tarred and feathered them from head to toe. In eyes, up noses, mouths full of it.
I had no time to deal with it and had to get to work so I deposited two glittering toddlers at nursery and left before anyone could protest. I think they are still finding bits of glitter 10 years later.
Fucking terrible stuff

I’m more baffled at who is giving out Xmas party invites at the height of summer?!

I’m surprised to see this post as I thought most people had switched to eco glitter years ago.

They can still take years to biodegrade! Lots of damage they can do to wildlife in the meantime.

Let’s face it. All of us have a fond memory of playing with biodegradable balloons. But what do they do to the environment? Find out all here...

Balloon releases are utterly selfish and cause real harm.

There are much better ways to remember a loved one than letting plastic sacks and string go into the environment to kill animals.

BALLOONS DON’T GO TO HEAVEN

There’s quite a divide on whether balloon releases are a fitting way to honor a passed loved one.

You are incredibly selfish and misguided. Do you have pets so I can come and terrify them? So they can die horribly choking on the plastic and string you've released?

Selfish idiot.

I have been known to send glitter-laden letters to people I'm not fond of...

I am simply trying to add sparkles to their life! (and a fun image of them cleaning it all up to mine) 😈

I have a friend who uses glitter in the crafts she sells. She sometimes finds it in her knickers!
It really does get everywhere!

Someone I know sent an anonymous glitter "bomb" to her husbands Affair partner. Petty revenge but very satisfying according to her.
