Glitter should be banned

willywallaby · 05/08/2024 19:56

Apparently it was banned in the EU last year! Not for the first time I'm wishing we still followed their rules, and we should follow suit now. We never buy glitter or items with glitter on but somehow it makes its way into our house anyway. If we get something like a card with a glittery front my heart sinks. In DD's bag of crafts from the school year that she brought home, there's an egg box decorated with glitter that already covered all the other crafts and I've left the egg box in the bag for now because I dare not bring it out! A few weeks ago DD found a little packet of glitter in a craft kit that we didn't know was there, and she emptied it all over the carpet and into her art box. It was hard enough clearing it out of the carpet and we're still finding it everywhere and cleaning out the art box will be so difficult we haven't even started yet. And it's all just bloody microplastics! The existence of glitter does no good for anyone.

I LOVE glitter!! It makes me happy, it makes my class happy and it's beautiful. I do buy biodegradable but sometimes I have to use normal. In these dark times, children need a bit of sparkle in their lives.

Oh ffs.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 06/08/2024 08:43

Of course plastic glitter should be banned. It's a total no-brainer. I'm all for glitter, but there is perfectly good biodegradable glitter now, so presumably if you ban the plastic stuff, more companies will stock the non-plastic stuff. Where's the downside to that?

Izzymoon · 06/08/2024 08:46

Won’t someone please think of the children!
Who needs clean water, non-polluted beaches or to be free from ingesting toxins?

Micro plastics have been found in every tested placenta since 2020. The likelihood of this having far reaching health issues that we haven’t even discovered yet are so high. But no, what children actually need is plastic glitter.

There isn't any downside but as shown by this thread people will literally complain and argue about anything just to be contrary.

Ignore the bit where they said they use biodegradable where possible...

Mmm. Sure. They’re finding microplastics in placentas but ja ja, your sad temporary trinket must exist.

I just looked this up. That’s horrifying.

I agree glitter should be banned, along with balloons.

And parties too?!

It’s insane the lengths people will go to in order to destroy the environment and health of others just out of spite and some perceived slight at being told what to do.
‘people pointing out the dangers and negative impact of it make me want to do it more’ like, what?! Some adults seem to be stuck in perpetual toddlerhood.

It’s like over here bonfires on a certain day are a big thing, police have to intervene because tyres are burned. Obviously this gives off incredibly toxic fumes, then the lengths these people go to in order to hide tyres inside the structure of the bonfire so it hopefully goes off undetected, unbelievable. Polluting the lunges of your children and local community, what a fuck you 🤯

You're the kind of person who takes part in charity litter picks but also partakes in balloon releases which are littering by another name.... I'm trying really hard to see the logic here?

You don’t need to see the logic. Like I said, no skin off my nose.

I take part in balloon releases in remembrance of a young family member. No, we won’t consider another way before anyone tries mentioning that.

I take part in charity litter picks as I am an active part of that charity’s community.

IncessantNameChanger · 06/08/2024 09:03

Once we didn't know the harm of plastics. Now we do. It should all be eco friendly gilter as we can make it, so why not just use the safer stuff

GladAllOver · 06/08/2024 09:12

Yes, the environment can fuck right off. Let's enjoy ourselves while we can. If the planet gets poisoned then someone else can sort it.

longtompot · 06/08/2024 10:03

I love glitter..to look at, but when my kids were small it used to give me palpitations at how it just spread everywhere and cleaning up is a nightmare. As soon as I heard how bad it was I was glad shops stopped using it on cards & wrapping paper.
How anyone can take part of balloon releases knowing the distress and harm it causes to wildlife is just beyond me. How can remembering a loved one in this way, knowing you could harm something be a good thing?

scalt · 06/08/2024 10:07

Classic Mumsnet, ban this, ban that.

In other news, mumsnetters have often started threads about petty revenge, including sending glitter through the post, so be careful what you wish to be banned!

Malahide · 06/08/2024 10:11

You’ll find that most glitter is biodegradable these days OP. Plus, is it really that awful if a bit gets stuck in your carpet, furnishings, car etc? It’s just a bit of glitter, I love it!

DD did her makeup for Taylor Swift in the car on the way to the venue. I don’t think that the pink and silver glitter is ever fully coming out of all the nooks and crannies🙈 It doesn’t bother me in the slightest though, I simply see the occasional twinkle and remember a really fun night.

What’s next on MN? Fun should be banned?

RausageSoul · 06/08/2024 10:18

There's a conspiracy that the worlds biggest manufacturer of glitter won't disclose who their largest buyer is and it's all very hush hush

I can't understand how a bereavement no matter how tragic and sad excuses anti social behaviour. Surely a young person would want a more environmentally friendly memorial. Who'd want to be remembered by farm animals choking. Balloon releases are just selfish littering. No different to throwing a packet of crisps on the floor. It's a totally unnecessary way of marking a loss.

LlynTegid · 06/08/2024 10:36

Now we are aware of the impact, yes it should be banned.

OneBadKitty · 06/08/2024 10:54

It makes me sad that there are people with such disregard for the environment and nature.Sure, each person has only a small part to play but collectively we can make a difference. Nobody needs plastic glitter on their cards, skin or anything else. I don’t want to eat foods containing plastic, Not using glitter is a small thing we can all do to work towards a less polluted world.

Discarded fishing gear is a bigger source of micro plastics than glitter ever will be.

If that's your biggest problem, you haven't really got a problem.

We can be concerned about all sorts of things at once, you know. And there is no Planet B.

Beth216 · 06/08/2024 11:20

It's great that there's now biodegradable glitter and hopefully this will completely replace non biodegradable glitter - but glitter isn't what's causing the seas to be full of plastics is it? It's got to be fairly low down on the scale of plastic pollution. We need to stop all single use plastics and we really need to get on top of plastic bottle use.

Balloons are awful because they kill wildlife and farm animals - can't believe the poster that just doesn't see the issue of remembering a death by killing other creatures. It's sad when even education doesn't change people's views.

gardenmusic · 06/08/2024 11:32

Are we going to rid ourselves of polyester clothing, too? I have, but I'm not losing sleep over a glittery card.
Glitter is not my style, but we have far bigger pollutants.
