To state that, overall, tea is a much superior drink to coffee?

Just back from holiday where I had endless cups of coffee of varying quality and couldn't wait to get back home (Ireland) for a nice cup of tea. I realised that I've never sat in front of a coffee, sipped it and gone "ah, that's a lovely cup of coffee" in the same way I have about tea... I've had nice coffees but not as instantly gratifying as nice tea. I grew up with tea but have jumped on the coffee bandwagon like everyone else so I have an expensive Gaggia in my kitchen and order in my favorite beans but now I'm wondering if I should just go back to the trusty tea bag...

I think, overall, tea is much more refreshing and flavourful and things like scones, sandwiches and cakes taste so much better with tea rather than coffee. AIBU?

Love the smell of coffee but not the taste. Love a nice cup of tea.

Sethera · 05/08/2024 18:43

I only ever fancy a coffee if I've got up mega early, 5am, say, and am travelling somewhere. A black coffee really hits the mark.

I can't stomach coffee with milk, let alone those whipped cream and syrup confections that look more like a sundae than a drink.

Otherwise, it's tea for me - Earl Grey is my preferred tea but I'll drink pretty much any kind.

The only time to drink a cup of tea is to accompany a very posh afternoon tea, when you are offered a wooden case inside which are a huge variety of teas. It’s then necessary to opt for English Breakfast and reject all the fancy ones.

Coffee has its place, in particular when I'm away from my kettle and can't get a decent brew, and it's very good for you as long as you don't have it with cream and sugar, but it's not a substitute for an endless supply of builders' tea in a proper mug.

Topofthemountain · 05/08/2024 18:44

Well, they both taste like dishwater, but tea is superior and the universe agrees with me.

MarkWithaC · 05/08/2024 18:45

Oh, I've gasped in wonder over many coffees! Usually those made by good baristas when I really need the caffeine (nothing really beats a properly made flat white first thing, IMO). And one from a tiny cheap greasy spoon type place in Rome an age ago that had a breakfast deal of a cappuccino and croissant for 2 euro, and remains the best coffee I've ever had.

I think they're different beasts, designed for different requirements and times of day (coffee to get me properly upright/verbal/functioning in the morning, tea for a mid-morning or afternoon pick-me-up or after a long cold walk.)

Tea is marriage material! Dependable, love it, always there to rely on, through the good, the bad and everything in between.

Coffees like a one night stand. Something you quite fancy a bit of at the time but it’s no tea!

earlymorningcurlewcall · 05/08/2024 18:46

We roast our own coffee beans so I think coffee is superior 😉

ssd · 05/08/2024 18:47

You can't beat a good cup of tea.

xsquared · 05/08/2024 18:50

Depends on my mood.

Tea doesn't wake me up in the same way as coffee.

Black coffee goes better with desserts and cake.

Tea goes better with biscuits.

I definitely drink more coffee than tea though.

KekseKekse · 05/08/2024 18:56

Coffee is horrible! Tea is even more horrible!! I can't abide a hot drink. 😩

Water all the way.

mirrorlife · 05/08/2024 18:58

With you 100%, OP.

DogsDinner · 05/08/2024 19:00

Totally agree. Tea is refreshing and thirst quenching, great even in hot weather. I do like coffee too, but I’d never drink it because I was thirsty.

Added bonus, tea is now considered to be good for you. Evidence on coffee is mixed.

Flavabobble · 05/08/2024 19:01

I don't get the love for Yorkshire tea, that really is rank.

Oh, thank God Grin

M&S gold is the best. Failing that, Yorkshire will do. I can't stand the taste or smell of coffee so I'm biased but I love tea, totally my favourite drink, even above wine or G&T!

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 05/08/2024 19:05

Sigh. OMG. I need to go for a walk.

OK. No. Coffee is better. Tea smells of vomit.

BarHumbugs · 05/08/2024 19:05

I drink tea mainly for the health benefits, i absolutely hate coffee, it tastes bitter and nasty. I have no idea which is superior or how to judge it but going by that fact that 5 billion cups of tea are drunk a day and 'only' 2 billion cups of coffee, it must be tea.

Overtheatlantic · 05/08/2024 19:05

I don’t get the obsession with tea, and it is an obsession started at a young age. How can anyone want a “nice cuppa” when it’s 27 degrees?

Heyhoitsme · 05/08/2024 19:09

There's no better tea than Barrys. I love my tea.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2024 19:10

It's not an either-or.

I mostly drink tea (Yorkshire, not gold) but love a good coffee mid-morning (fresh beans from Atkinsons, Aeropress).

Kitkatfiend31 · 05/08/2024 19:10

YANBU Tea is vital. I always take tea bags on holiday!

the80sweregreat · 05/08/2024 19:11

I love tea. I drink too much of it though , but not with sugar

HappyLittleNarwhal · 05/08/2024 19:11

Mmm a drink that smells and tastes like metal.

No thanks!

And I'd never want a hot drink with cake, yuck!
