to say dd (12) is too young to have Facebook?

I am getting a constant ear-bashing because dd says that 'all' her mates have Facebook and I think she is too young. Her older brothers have it, but they are 17 and 14+. ATM, dd spends as much time as she can on messenger, texting or her DS Lite so I don't feel inclined to allow facebook for that reason either but am I being unreasonable and out of step? Am happy to be told so if i am being, but I am also a bit concerned.

Hmmm.

I'd say 12 was ok for Facebook tbh (and I am pretty anti kids-on-computers). It has pretty strict privacy settings, you can insist she keeps her page visible to her friends only.

What exactly is it that bothers you? If its the amount of time she spends on the computer, then limit how long she is allowed to be on it for.

dizzydixies · 14/04/2008 21:27

can you stipulate time spent on it and monitor who she is in contact with?

NorthernLurker · 14/04/2008 21:28

I agree with you. It's horribly addictive and I think 12 is too young.

magnolia74 · 14/04/2008 21:31

Dd1 is nearly 13 and not allowed facebook. Pretty adult orientated IMO. She is allowed Bebo when used in the front room when we are home

pinkbubble · 14/04/2008 21:34

I agree, DD is almost 14, and I will not allow her facebook, I do not actually agree with her on MSN, but allow her half an hr at a time in the living room. She is worried about her street cred!

madmuggle · 14/04/2008 22:09

Most internet sites have a 13+ code unless parental consent is given. Thus she is screwed six ways to sunday. Job done

cory · 15/04/2008 08:35

I won't allow it at 12 either (in 6 months time). And I don't care what all her mates are allowed.

Facebook says that its for over 18's I think- my colleague has just set her firewall to stop her 14 yr old going on it when she found that out.

mumeeee · 15/04/2008 21:01

YANBU. DD1 and 2 didn't have facebook untill they were over 16 infact DD1 didn't start using it until she went to uni so she was 18.. DD3 16 doesn't use facebok but started uaing myspace last year when she was 15.
