If you're not detached, it's warm and everyone has their windows open?

It's Ann annoying sound at the best of times, but really, it's 8am on Sunday!!!!!!

AIBU to feel fuming with my neighbours?

I'm sure their son is over 15, so this isn't a case of a toddler that's been up since dawn and this feels like the middle of the day to them.

I don't know how to set up the vote sorry so answers welcomed!

Parent of musicians here. I'd not let them lock off before 9 on a weekend.

I can't remember if they hold exams on a Sunday. Could it be he's warming up for one?

Sorry: "kick off"

I think 8 am is very unreasonable on a Sunday. I suppose you should be grateful that it's not a violin. My friend's former neighbour who had a piano on the other side of her bedroom wall and made their child practice at 7 am every day. It nearly drove her mad until it was moved.

Wordsmithery · 04/08/2024 09:45

Werweisswohin · 04/08/2024 08:37

Do you have neighbours?
Surely as well as a hours limit you'd also have a duration limit?

Well we weren’t talking about duration but fwiw the piano gets played an absolute max of 30 mins per day - usually more like 10 or 15, sadly.

YOYOK · 04/08/2024 09:45

A badly played recorded is a horrible sound and yes 8 am is too early for that sort of horrible noise.

If he's not good and this isn't a regular occurance. Have you considered they're doing it deliberately to annoy you?

Have you done anything lately to bother them? Any loud renovations?

Loud noises from your bedroom in the night? If you cna hear them, they can hear you.

This to me sounds more like they're very aware of what they're doing and they're doing it for a reason.

Isn’t it just as likely he is simply practising and perhaps not aware the sound is travelling? Not sure why posters keep assuming there must be some deliberate intent on his part!

Decisionsdecisions1 · 04/08/2024 09:49

No. Neither would I leave dogs to bark outside at 7am on a Sunday but some people think that's fine.

People will do what's convenient for them unfortunately. Speak to them rather than suffer in silence.

ohrwally · 04/08/2024 09:54

They also blow a thing which sounds like a conch and ring a bell twice per day. Evening one is at dinner time so no issue, morning one is early day around 7ish and we are up and about so agin no issue but not sure I'd be pleased if I was a night worker.

I'd be glad about that tbh. 😬

In our house piano is allowed 9am to 9pm which feels reasonable. 8am does not.

If whoever plays it, could play like him, that would be fine. 😁

Fraaahnces · 04/08/2024 10:49

I’d be holding midnight seances in the same room, burning incense and playing heavy metal until the latest legally allowed time right against the same wall.

I still don't understand how blind his female fans were, it really was simpler times!

Certainly we're simpler times. I always watched him on TV as the shows were just so over the top, but really enjoyable.

Recorders are one of the worst instruments ever made. YANBU.

They have persisted through centuries when less functional instruments have dropped out of use.

What gives them a bad name is

a) using an instrument which requires good breath control as a first instrument for children

b) having said children play in “unison” when they won’t all agree in pitch

c) using the descant instrument just because the finger holes are closer together, when the lower instruments (alto, tenor, bass, great bass etc) have a more mellow tone.

Recorders are ghastly. TEEEEEET! TEEEEEET! TEEEEEEEET! the senseless stupid sound they make when blown inanely is infuriating.

Now a flute- played well, is completely different. Beautiful and melodious.

So is a recorder played well. The sound generation is the same, it’s just the method of producing the initial vibration which is different. “Flute à bec” as opposed to “transverse flute”

FiveShelties · 04/08/2024 11:18

Is there a good time to play the recorder?

We learnt at school, first tune was something like....
Go and tell Aunt Nancy
Go and tell Aunt Nancy
The old grey goose is dead.

My poor parents.

mm81736 · 04/08/2024 11:22

Well I wouldn't play the recorder at any time, but no. I would not feel the need to be quiet until 10 am

Turophilic · 04/08/2024 11:26

The only reason to play the recorder at 8am on a Sunday is to torment someone. I speak from bitter experience.

Does the 15yo have a sibling?

NorthernSpirit · 04/08/2024 11:30

Absolutely not acceptable at all.

Peoples lack of consideration for others absolutely astonishes me.

I run an events business and arrived home at 3am this morning exhausted after working a 17 hour day yesterday at a wedding. I was quiet as a mouse when I parked up & arrived home as I didn’t want to disturb the neighbours.

At 7:45am this morning next door but one’s kid was screaming the street down outside my bedroom window. I’m buying a supershooter water gun today to silence the little fucker (this isn’t the first time).

DeathpunchDan · 04/08/2024 11:50

I'd be responding with London's Burning on repeat ( complete with that wretched high pitched screeching sound when you play the thing wrong) until they got the message, but then again I'm a bit of a vindictive nobber.

No I wouldn't play it at 8am on a Sunday morning but in this case I would, louder and longer from 7am

Oh no! I have an ear worm 🪱 now!
The shrill “ 🔥 FIRE 🔥 FIRE!” As the recorder screals..
It was definitely an instrument made to torture the sensitive of hearing.

MathiasBroucek · 04/08/2024 12:42

My wife was a pro musician. She would never have practiced at 8 am at the weekend
