Would you play the recorder at 8am on a Sunday?

If you're not detached, it's warm and everyone has their windows open?

It's Ann annoying sound at the best of times, but really, it's 8am on Sunday!!!!!!

AIBU to feel fuming with my neighbours?

I'm sure their son is over 15, so this isn't a case of a toddler that's been up since dawn and this feels like the middle of the day to them.

I don't know how to set up the vote sorry so answers welcomed!

Very odd! Do the parents have ear plugs in?

A 15 year old may well be of a very high musical standard. People who malign the recorder either have never heard one played properly, to professional standard, or are just very unmusical.

Having said that, it all depends on the circumstances. Our next door neighbours left over an hour ago to get to their sporting activities, our opposite neighbours are also up and about outside.

If you are certain your neighbours are having a lie in or might be asleep then any excessive noise, musical or otherwise, might be inconsiderate.

I've heard it played by skilled musicians. I sill detest it.

summerdazey · 04/08/2024 08:25

I was thinking church too.

Never mind op just shut your windows next time

KatieCrusoe · 04/08/2024 08:25

Would a loud, "Jesus Christ, what the fuck is that racket" shut him up?

coffeeaddict83 · 04/08/2024 08:26

Sounds like the sort of thing someone might do in noise related retaliation. Did you have a party last night? Child crying? Anything that might have woken them?

If not, yes it's unreasonable.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 04/08/2024 08:28

If he's a teenager, I imagine his parents pissed him off last night, or told him he shouldn't be lying in his bed all morning and he's decided to teach them a lesson. I assume he's not having a recorder jam every morning, and kids don't think about things like how soundproof adjoining walls are. Shout "Shut up!" He'll hear you and will stop.

Get a round of London's Burning going?

Wordsmithery · 04/08/2024 08:33

In our house piano is allowed 9am to 9pm which feels reasonable. 8am does not.

No the only thing we did last night was close all our back windows as they had a fire and the smoke was getting in the house.

Most people just turn the telly up don’t they?

HelpMeGetThrough · 04/08/2024 08:36

Crank up the music and turn the speakers to the wall.

A bit of James Galway should sort it.

(Yes, I know it's not the recorder).

theeyeofdoe · 04/08/2024 08:37

He might swap to the trumpet or violin if you complain.

Do you have neighbours?
Surely as well as a hours limit you'd also have a duration limit?

Willmafrockfit · 04/08/2024 08:38

very selfish of him

Willmafrockfit · 04/08/2024 08:39

could you have a word later?

reluctantbrit · 04/08/2024 08:41

No, no instrument should be played that early, regardless how well the musician is.

Wakeywake · 04/08/2024 08:43

I'm in awe at a teenager waking up before 8am during holidays to play a musical instrument. I occasionally see my teens around 11am and the piano is gathering dust.

One of my friends did a masters at the RCM playing the recorder, she is incredible.

Sounds like this kid isn’t on that journey OP, in which case I would wonder what had got into him.

oakleaffy · 04/08/2024 08:48

Recorders are ghastly. TEEEEEET! TEEEEEET! TEEEEEEEET! the senseless stupid sound they make when blown inanely is infuriating.

Now a flute- played well, is completely different. Beautiful and melodious.

Werweisswohin · 04/08/2024 08:48

A bit of Rammstein, speakers directed toward their wall, might shut him up.

Or drums.

Koko83 · 04/08/2024 08:52

I’m in early riser and used to blocking annoying noises lol so it probably wouldn’t bother my ears so much - buuuut literally everybody else in my house is still asleep including my toddler and it would annoy them and annoy me that my toddler got woken up earlier.
I wake up around 6, do my QUIET chores and then right now I am with a cup of tea, I’ve finished a book and now on mumsnet and will start another book (browsing my kindle). This is my me time and the longer they sleep the more time I get to myself.
i do the hoovering once everyone is awake.

Newbutoldfather · 04/08/2024 08:53

Everyone has their own ideas about acceptable times but noise laws in the uk are generally about 11PM-7AM. I personally think 8:30AM would be ok, but 8AM a bit early.

In my old house, I was blithely told by a neighbour with teens that parties finished by midnight. Their teens used to several times a year have parties like that complete with loud music and screaming which gradually wound down starting at midnight.

For me night time noise is far worse than daytime noise and amplified music is far worse than instruments.

But 8AM is probably a little early.
