Would you play the recorder at 8am on a Sunday?

If you're not detached, it's warm and everyone has their windows open?

It's Ann annoying sound at the best of times, but really, it's 8am on Sunday!!!!!!

AIBU to feel fuming with my neighbours?

I'm sure their son is over 15, so this isn't a case of a toddler that's been up since dawn and this feels like the middle of the day to them.

I don't know how to set up the vote sorry so answers welcomed!

I wouldn’t be best pleased but would close the window and say nothing.

We had a neighbour mid 30’s who was often up at stupid o clock on a Saturday or Sunday cutting the grass or with the pressure washer out washing the car. It woke us up and annoyed us to hell. He was a nice man so we closed the windows and said nothing. He died a few months later he had cancer unknown to everyone and had stopped working. I really miss seeing him and wish he was at it making a noise today rather than seeing his poor wife and family without him.

In your case OP it sounds like the lad has SEN close the windows, put a fan on and say nothing I am sure it will fizzle out.

I also hate the recorder and was so pleased my kids experimentation with it was short lived.

Du Hast!!!!

I'm familiar with the song.
It could be fairly annoying if you don't appreciate Rammstein.
'Giftig' might be a good choice. 😁

AmyFFismyhomegirl · 04/08/2024 08:56

I don't think there is a good time for the recorder. However I would say 8 isn't unreasonable. Before 8 yes. Clearly I'm in the minority though.

exprecis · 04/08/2024 08:56

We just had our supermarket delivery this morning at around 8:15..

Personally I think if you sleep with the windows open, you have to expect some noise might disturb you. I use ear plugs if I am doing that.

Recorder isn't that loud so I wouldn't assume it would disturb a neighbour

OP can hear it, so it's loud enough to be an annoyance.

I would guess that the teenager is doing this to annoy his parents or a sibling or neighbours (which might be the other side not you). Retaliation for something yesterday.

on any objective basis it is too early but teenagers aren’t always great at thinking about others (well mine aren’t anyway).

That is really sad.
Your story is reminiscent of a film I saw about neighbours who envied their NDN's

Well worth a watch.

He doesn't have SEN. He is very intelligent and goes to grammar school.

My next door neighbour plays the recorder for several hours a day, and just twiddling/messing about noise, not even a shit rendition of twinkle twinkle etc. you have my sympathies, it’s a uniquely awful sound

I'm going to listen...
I'm not au fait with Rammstein, but know Du hast.

Oh I can see how it might be ideal for annoying a tootling neighbour!

On here it's often recommended to make lots of noise, early if a neighbour has disturbed your sleep. They seem to forget that you will also disturb everyone around you. If you start playing music then both sides get it.

JMSA · 04/08/2024 09:11

No!

But then there's no good time for the recorder Grin

Ratherbeaspoonthanafork · 04/08/2024 09:14

Ok sounds like he is trying to annoy someone either parents, you or both.

I would say nothing as you don’t want these things to escalate.

AudiobookListener · 04/08/2024 09:18

It's actually a very quiet instrument, compared to others and not the worst sounding one either. It sounds as if your neighbour takes it seriously, if he is up early practising. Unfortunately, playing through tunes isn't part of practice. It's more likely to be repeating the same little bit 5 times to fix it in your brain. Be thankful your neighbour does not play trumpet, drumkit or beginner oboe. Practising a musical instrument is generally considered reasonable domestic noise and not noise-nuisance. So accept and enjoy.

jen337 · 04/08/2024 09:23

The only question is Does it bother you enough to go round there and speak to them about it because discussing it at length on mumsnet isn’t going to change the situation is it?

Boredlass · 04/08/2024 09:26

It wouldn’t bother me. Sundays are just another day. Millions of people are working so I don’t get the idea that we all need to be silent. It’s very dated

millymae · 04/08/2024 09:27

Give me a recorder any day over a barking dog, motorbike left running to warm up or one of those really noisy lawnmowers.
Sunday isn’t any different nowadays to the other 6 days of the week so 8.00am isn’t a early start for lots of people

No it doesn't bother me enough. I avoided confrontation so would never raise this as an issue with my neighbours.

I posted on here as I wasn't sure if how I felt was disproportionate to the noise made at the time. I have a sense now that I was reasonable to feel the way that I did and that has been comforting.

The noise has stopped now. The mother sings and prays at 5:30am in the garden on weekdays. I'm up early during the week so it doesn't bother me but if I was trying to sleep that would bother me too. I still wouldn't say anything to her though .

Not quite sure what makes a recorder sound like a squawking Budgie- but on a serious note regarding budgies, a woman I met was looking to re-home hers as they were so shrill. {a couple of weeks into ownership}
She had no idea that happy budgies chatter and trill for a lot of the time.

TroysMammy · 04/08/2024 09:30

I still love my 50 year old recorder. When I come across it I can't help playing a tune but not at 8am on a Sunday morning as I would still be in bed scrolling through the bonkers called Mumsnet.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 04/08/2024 09:31

If he's not good and this isn't a regular occurance. Have you considered they're doing it deliberately to annoy you?

Have you done anything lately to bother them? Any loud renovations?

Loud noises from your bedroom in the night? If you cna hear them, they can hear you.

This to me sounds more like they're very aware of what they're doing and they're doing it for a reason.

It's quite possibly quieter but it's also more annoying.

ohrwally · 04/08/2024 09:32

No we are quiet and respectful. Generally get on well with them, take parcels on etc.

YANBU.
As for praying (or anything else) at 5.30am, in a way loud enough for others to hear, that's definitely selfish.
Maybe the son finds that annoying too and that's why he's playing his recorder? 😬
