To ask how you remember your passwords?

You seem to need a password to do anything these days! We do have a book at home that we write them in when we remember but if we're not at home it's a bit of a problem. I've had a notification that I've won a prize on the lottery but won't know if I'm a millionaire until I can get the password later today 🤣 I used to use the same one all the time so I'd remember (yes I know you're not supposed to) but now most need umpteen letters and special characters that I would never remember so I can't do that anymore. I do usually click "save password" which works until my phone resets itself or something then I'm stuffed unless I can get to the password book or click "forgot password" if I'm desperate. I'm so happy when I can check out as a guest (increasingly rare).

Is it just me?

I don't bother saving my bank details that way I can share simple passwords across accounts burgers don't get my account details they just get my mumsnet angst or my argos wish list

I have a system. All passwords follow the same pattern if you know the system but they are all different because of the system. A bit like the Woolworths example above. I occasionally come a cropper when an organisation has very specific rules about password structure that doesn’t fit my system. I either don’t use the organisation or get a reset every time if I have no choice.

I use Bitwarden, moved over to it from last pass years ago and very happy with it.

I work in finance and have over 200 passwords, both personal and professional, so it's impossible to remember them all.

I use the Apple device function, and have a backup copy in an encrypted folder.

I keep meaning to provide a copy of them to a close relative in case I die suddenly (I'm a single parent, and they would also be my executor and DC guardian) but I haven't worked out a secure enough way to do it. Grateful for any suggestions.

@lightand Yes, they have. But hey you do you. It's an unnecessary risk to take IMO.

I use a password manager, but sometimes it doesn’t work. Even passwords it has been providing consistently, I swear they just disappear.

I use a rough formula for how I derive my passwords. The problem is that sites have different rules plus often make you change your password so the formula doesn’t always work.

I’ve started to put them in a book I keep hidden. Analog was the only real solution.

another vote for last pass, have a personal account and a work account but it operates them as one.

Google password manager in Chrome. All I need to do is sign in to chrome whatever device I'm on and all the passwords appear. They're all unique, long and strong and I don't need to remember anything other than my main account password.

I keep them all in a word doc on my laptop. And back that up, when I remember, to a memory stick, along with photos and all other dics. Of course when the last laptop died and I needed a password this didn't do much good, because. . . nothing to put the memory stick into to read it (duh). Now I email the doc to myself every so often so I could open it on my phone.

I'm lazy and use the same thing for everything 😃
