To think that this is mockery of the highest level.

In a country of food banks and poverty a well know department store has opened a shop selling fake food as toys. It's sold out and people are paying £50 for a chip with a cute smile.

AIBU that we have lost touch with reality l? Consumerism gone mad?!

goneveryquiet · 03/08/2024 23:12

I just hope they are making a donation to a local food bank

OP posts:
MrsApplepants · 03/08/2024 23:13

So what, department stores aren’t allowed to sell toys now to people who can afford them because other people can’t?

Fake food as toys isn't new...

And it's not like they could EAT the fake food either

People can spend their money how they want.

Have been what

Omg people are spending money on things they don't need to! Fuck you with your Mercedes and your Jags, buy a cheaper 20 year old car and give the extra to charedeee

Don't go to restaurants and have nice food, go to Macdonalds

Devilsmommy · 03/08/2024 23:25

@EatTheGnome People buying those toys have worked hard for their money and can spend it as they like. They are also the ones in a position to make regular charitable donations.

People who can spend that kind of money on toys aren't the people who make charitable donations

goneveryquiet · 03/08/2024 23:25

@LikeAFineMerlot that doesn't even make sense Biscuit

So kids can't have toy kitchens now or play shops or am I missing the point here?

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 03/08/2024 23:26

Are you talking about the jellycat fish and chip shop? Without any context this sounds mad.

It’s just a soft toy. They are over priced but I’m not sure why it matters if it’s a chip soft toy or a bunny soft toy.

You know that do you?

Yes.

I'm the one who doesn't make sense

Sethera · 03/08/2024 23:28

Well, yes - this is capitalism, I'm afraid. £50 toys are barely a speck of ice on the tip of the iceberg when you consider the money that is squandered on all sorts of nonsense while some live in desperate poverty.

It wouldn't matter. I don't need to justify how I spend my money. Hut if you want to play that game, I'll answer of you answer:

Have you spent any money this month that wasn't a charity donation?

@LikeAFineMerlot I think OP os referring to the jellycat experience where you can queue up and buy a themed toy. Like your kid buys "fish and chips" but it's actually a soft toy and they sales assistant role plays with the kids. Not that you could be expected to know that given that OP cannot articulate herself without talking in riddles.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 03/08/2024 23:28

Well people that don't have money can't donate something they don't have.

To be crude, I don't think homeless people are topping up the food banks.

So if I donate 10% of my salary each month, volunteer, and put stuff in food banks, by your logic I'm still not allowed to buy a soft toy? So what am I allowed to spend my money on? 100% to charity, same as you, yeah?

Adviceneeeeded · 03/08/2024 23:32

Most things are bought as a want and not a need. It's not going to stop people needing food banks...

If Mrs jones decided she was going to buy one of those toys and then changed her mind. I doubt she would be thinking about the food bank and then donating the equivalent to it. She would probably think, oo I saved myself £50 and go about her day.

I think the toys are over priced but so are most things people buy without necessity.

Thank you, I have no idea what they are wittering on about.

But people always spend money on things that could be got for cheaper, because that's what people do

Runnerinthenight · 03/08/2024 23:33

Jellycats are fabulous!!

Selfridges is a high end store. Pretty much everything is expensive. Have you seen their ladieswear??

Buy them or don't buy them. The End.

Outrage for the sake of being outraged.

Someone please think of the children

EllenLRipley · 03/08/2024 23:35

Is it just jellycat toys that annoy you? If so why? Are non food related frivolities for children ok?
Weird hill to take a stand on op

serialcatbuyer · 03/08/2024 23:44

Yeah, it's kind of sick
