Confused about train seat

boarded a train with my son, went to a table where there were 4 seats. 3 of the 4 seats were vacant. The two were reserved (light above the seat), the other two available. There was a woman sat in one of the reserved seats and we went to sit in the two available seats opposite her. She said would I mind not sitting there as she possibly may need to move as she was sat in a reserved seat (she hadn’t reserved it), she was sat there as she can’t travel backwards. I was confused as I said, but these seats are available (where we were about to sit), and she got uppity and said I didn’t understand what she was saying?

I think I do understand- she was sitting in a reserved seat hoping to stay there travelling forwards, but wanted to bagsy the seats opposite in case she had to move but stay near her friends who were sat on an adjacent table.

Was I being unreasonable to sit in the available seats? She got up in a right huff and sat somewhere else close by.

I was on a train with 5 friends booked seats. A couple joined the train about an hour into the journey. They preceded in telling two of us were in their seats. We disagreed and refused to move. They sat opposite me and my friend muttering away for some time. The wife then realised they were on the wrong carriage. No apologies when they left for their correct seats. Some people are train seat arseholes!

Having done a lot of train travel, I have encountered various CFs like this. I just say "Sorry, it doesn't work like that" and sit down. Nobody is entitled to take up more than one seat and anybody can sit in an unreserved seat. That's all there is to it.

Some people are beyond cheeky, I once booked seats for us as a family of 4 with 2 young children.

When we went to our seats there was a lady already sat there all set up with a laptop, she was beyond fuming said it didn't say reserved when she sat (well it did when we arrived) she tried to shoo us off to some other vacant seats, we refused!

She then thought there were only 3 of us until our smallest one emerged, she went off huffing and puffing and slating us for being mean.

YANBU OP the passenger chose a reserved seat, so must suffer the consequence of being shifted out!
